  • CARD OF THANKS

    Aug 12, 2010

To my entire hometown Waitsburgians, I've wanted for some time to thank you for your love, support, and prayers. My parents often write and tell me people have asked about me and put me on the prayer chain. There is no doubt in my mind that the power of prayer has gotten me this far. I've often wondered why bad things happen and think God is giving us opportunities to be strong. We must live each day beautifully as tomorrow is promised to no one and we have but one life; there are no refunds whether we are satisfied or not. I've chosen t...

WAITSBURG - Cardinals T-shirts, Touchet Valley farm truck decals, Kison Court sports banners, Dayton shop signs, Waitsburg High Letterman jackets. The list of items produced by Blue Crystal Screenprinting Signs on Willard could go on and on. Chances are they all look familiar. They're icons of our everyday lives and our every-weekend sports. In the 16 years since it was founded, Waitsburg entrepreneur Elizabeth Cole has supplied the Touchet Valley and many clients in Walla Walla with at...

  • Private Screening By Local Director

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Aug 12, 2010

WAITSBURG - By all accounts, the life of Ginny Ruffner is extraordinary. She is a celebrated glass artist known for her lamp-working technique. She uses a gas torch to melt rods and tubes of clear and colored glass, then paints them. The results are groundbreaking, some would say "other-wordly," making her one of the most important female glass artists in the country. She once dated Northwest author Tom Robbins and is said to have inspired a character in his novel "Skinny Legs And All." Earlier...

  • PIONEER PORTRAITS

    Aug 12, 2010

Ten Years Ago August 24, 2000 The most intense wildland fire season in over 50 years has caused evacuations and health concerns. Project Impact urges firesafety procedures be observed. Locally, firefighters responded Friday afternoon to a residence in the 300 block of Coppei to extinguish a crawlspace fire. Twenty-Five Years Ago August 8, 1985 "Don't Blink, 1985 Harvest may be over" turned out to be a little premature. Rains late last week and heavier showers Sunday put harvest time on hold. Honoring the anniversary of the second atomic b...

  • Judith Henderson’s Wine & Country Living

    Aug 12, 2010

When wine tasting room managers call me with wine news, I listen. Melody Leathers from Glenncorrie Winery, Walla Walla, called to tell me she and a half a dozen other wineries located on Highway 12, out beyond the new highway construction, have come up with some creative signage inviting the tourists and locals back to the wine region in the southern end of the county. Apparently this summer the south-end wineries have not experienced the crowds they have in the past and feel it's because of the confusing exits and entrances on the new...

  • Harvest Patience

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Aug 12, 2010

On the way home from Walla Walla recently we found ourselves stuck behind a combine on Highway 12. My first instinct was to finda quick way around the slow-moving vehicle so we wouldn't have to travel the rest of the way to Waitsburg at 30 miles per hour. I eased up right behind it, looking for an opportunity to pass it in the oncoming lane. Then I relaxed somewhat, remembering this is harvest time, and I backed off to make sure I didn't make the combine driver feel pressured. It's easy to forget that farmers have little choice in using...

  • Dog Days of Summer

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Aug 12, 2010

It's 6:30 a.m. Granted, the sun is already angling in over the treetops in our yard off Main Street, but I wouldn't normally be up this early if it weren't for our brand new puppy. I'm wandering around in the dewy light in boxers and a T-shirt, giving him a chance to do his business. It's been two weeks since Lucy, our beloved Airdale, passed away after an accident. Last week, our older dog Snowy, a wire-haired Fox Terrier, succumbed to old age. Two weeks ago, I described how we picked tw...

  • Supports John Turner

    Aug 12, 2010

Dear Editor, To see is to believe. After researching the candidates for the open Walla Walla County Sheriff's position, there is no doubt in my mind that John Turner is the right person for the job. Spend five minutes with John and it becomes very clear that he among any of the candidates has the best credentials and the ability to lead the department into the future. From his work as a gang unit police officer, corporal, senior lead officer, law enforcement attorney, and most recently serving in Iraq investigating and going after...

  • Supports John Turner

    Aug 12, 2010

Dear Editor, I am delighted that John Turner is running for Walla Walla County Sheriff. Both of his opponents currently work for the Walla Walla County Sheriff and have for over 30 years. They've been the captains in charge for the last 12 years. Unless John Turner is elected, I tend to believe it will be more business as usual. Currently the sheriff's officedoes not provide 24/7 coverage, they ran our K-9 program into failure, and there is a huge lack of attention to the rising gang problems our area has been experiencing. As a former police...

  • Puttin’ Around: Golf Carts Go Legal?

    Dian McClurg, The Times|Aug 12, 2010

WAITSBURG - Citizens of Waitsburg could get an opportunity to save on gas and enjoy certain new liberties if Mayor Walt Gobel has anything to say about it. Gobel has encouraged city councilors to take a look at an ordinance that would allow golf carts on streets inside Waitsburg city limits. The proposed ordinance will be discussed at the next city council meeting, on Aug. 18. "Well, it's a bit personal," Gobel said Monday. "My wife has one and we have, in the past, run it around town staying pretty much on the sidewalks." But state...

  • No Rest For The Weary

    Dian McClurg, The Times|Aug 12, 2010

Volunteer fire fighters in the Touchet Valley spent a weary weekend battling blaze upon blaze as foul weather, careless drivers and faulty machinery conspired to keep emergency personnel on their toes from one end of the valley to the other. Times correspondent Laverne Mayberry, of Prescott, reported that close to 200 firefighters from across the state, 40 engines and a helicopter were called in to help contain a fire that raged over 23,000 acres near Eureka over the weekend. More than half a...
