DAYTON - John Smiley, a retired hospital administrator from Prosser, has begun work as part-time interim CEO at Columbia County Health System in Dayton. He takes over for Dale Polla, who agreed to resign August 1 after less than a year on the job. Smiley spent about six months as CCHS's interim CEO in 2012, after the departure of Charlie Button and prior to Polla's hiring. "Smiley is highly respected in the state," said CCHS board chair Lisa Naylor in an interview. "He knows everybody and he...
Th e Amtrak train pulled out of the Spokane station right on time: 1:30 a.m. sharp. I dragged my bags through two dark train cars nearly full of mostly sleeping passengers. Finally I nodded toward an empty seat next to a guy wearing a hoodie over his baseball cap. He nodded back and then looked away. He looked out the window all the way to Sandpoint in the darkness, completely ignoring me, and then slinked off the train. It was nearly three. Thank goodness. Now maybe I could get a little sh...
WAITSBURG - Inspired by the metal work Dayton artist Yancey Yost did on the letters for the Times building, Coppei Coffee owner Allison Bond had him make a sign for her shop next door. The shapely cup in arrested rust was to be mounted above the door at a 90-degree angle to Main Street, much like the sign above the jimgermanbar a few doors up the street. By the time it was done, she had already invested about $1,000 in the sign's creation and was ready to put it up, so she went into City H...
DAYTON - While the Dayton Swim Team placed third out of seven teams competing in the Annual Jerry Cluckey Swim Meet on August 3, many personal best records were achieved. "It's not about the team get- ting first place," said Coach Rosy Nechodom. "Swimmers 'win' when they do their personal best, and that is exactly what the team did at the County Championship Meet." Forty- three Dayton swimmers competed in 149 individual races. With up to 21 swimmers competing in each event, the fight to fin- ish...

This morning I noticed the Kale bushes in my garden bursting in large, curly green leaves. I got busy trim- ming the outer leaves from each bush to use in a suc- culent salad for dinner. The two things I love about all leafy greens: the incredible color spray in every conceivable shade of green from near black to chartreuse and the leafy vegetable's ability to mimic the flavors it grows near. In the case of the kale grown in my garden, bushing-up against lavender and heirloom lemon tomato lends a succu- lent calcium-rich, lemony-earthen flavor...
The term "symmetry" suggests balanced proportions, or the beauty of form arising from balanced proportions, according to Merriam-Webster. There are other, more strict interpretations, but this idea fits what is happening in the wheat market right now. Since May 1, there have been five downward and four cor- responding upward movements in the Chicago wheat price futures contracts. Each downward move has been between 10 and 15 trading sessions in duration, and declined an average of about 50 cents. Each has produced a new lower low than the...

Whenever I see a clump of clover in the middle of a lawn, I habitually stoop down and examine it, look- ing for a four-leaved speci- men. I've done this ever since I found out that these actually exist in the wild, rare genetic mutations of the workaday three-leaved variety. Well, this weekend, while on a kayaking trip, I actually found one on the banks of the Snake River. It wasn't all pretty and perfect like the bizarrely symmetrical versions that rear their plasticine heads ev- ery Saint Patr...
Fair season is just around the corner, and so is the Pendleton Roundup: Sept. 11 - 14. Around here, that annual event within easy driving distance needs little introduction, but it's worth re- membering how the first Roundup more than 100 years ago was billed: "A frontier exhibition of picturesque pastimes, Indian and military spectacles, cow- boy racing and bronco bust- ing for the championship of the Northwest." Why? Well, we here in the Touchet Valley may want to zero in on one aspect of the...
When Dale Polla was hired last fall as CEO of the Columbia County Health System, we at The Times, along with most other community mem- bers, breathed a sigh of relief, hoping that finally a long stretch of turmoil at our local healthcare provider had ended. Apparently it hadn't. On August 1, Polla agreed to resign during the regular Columbia County Health System Board of Director's meet- ing. In interviews given after the resignation, board chair Lisa Naylor indicated that the board was...
