  • Farmers Help Contain Whetstone Fire

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Aug 18, 2011

DAYTON - A fire believed to have been sparked by a lawn mower threatened two homes and burned 250 acres near the county line off Whetstone Road north of the Touchet River valley Sunday. It destroyed a garden shed, scorched the side of a pickup truck and burned 50 acres of standing grain. It was the first serious fire of the summer in the territory covered by Walla Walla County Fire District 2 based in Waitsburg, even though the blaze started on the Columbia side of the county line. Dozens of...

  • Letter to the Editor

    Aug 18, 2011

To the editor: I support Mike Fredrickson's reelection to the Walla Walla Port Distrcit #2. Both Mike and Port have had a good year -- in fact several good years. The Port was named state "Port of the year," cited for the Rail X Project, their role in the Highway 12 extension, and received an environmental award from the Department of Transportation. As an appraiser, Mike makes important contributions to the Board. Mike has served six years on the Walla Walla Planning Commission., one year as chair. He is a member of a 4th generation farm...

  • Food & Drug Agency In A Slump

Reps. Cathy Mcmorris Rodgers (r-wa) And Brian Bilbray (r-ca)|Aug 18, 2011

Seattle Mariners slugger and 10- time All-Star Ichiro Suzuki is a career .327 hitter. So far this season, he is batting a respectable .269. To the casual observer, that's a pretty consistent and impressive record. But a close fan of the game would also suggest that this year, Ichiro is in a bit of a slump. Sports columnist Les Carpenter even points out that over a few weeks this spring, from May 19 to June 9, he was especially cold - hitting only .149. Fans would likely say that Ichiro is...

  • Where East Meets West

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Aug 18, 2011

WAI T SBURG - Seattle-area residents who tuned into their local National Public Radio affiliate this week were introduced to none other than Waitsburg's Bret Moser, Jim German, Claire Johnston and Jack Millar. Seattle- based KUOW focused on Waitsburg in a second segment about the so-called "Cascade Curtain," a physical, and some would say cultural and political, divide between the west and east sides of the Cascade Mountains. In his show "Waitsburg: When East Meets West," reporter Dominic Black...

  • Take A Walk On The Wild Side

    Tracy Daniel, The Times|Aug 18, 2011

WAITSBURG- Labor Day is just around the corner. With harvest still in full swing, many families may be skipping that usual weeklong vacation in search for a quick getaway to rejuvenate the soul before school and seeding begins. Right in our own back yard is a little piece of paradise that my best friend and I rediscovered while looking for a place to take a dip in the Touchet River. Our usual spot by the train trestle along Highway 12 near Huntsville was occupied that day, so we decided to take...

  • Mountain Mystery

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Aug 18, 2011

WAITSBURG - In the arid summer back country of the Blue Mountains, Gary Lommasson had come across bones before - animal bones parching in the sun. As an elk hunter, Lommasson often hikes deep into the steep and rugged terrain of the Umatilla National Forest in search of a prized bull, which he hunts with a special tag using bow and arrow. But he knew what he saw during an elk scouting trip in the Deduct Pond area off Tiger Canyon on the morning of July 22 was different, very different. At the...

Three Rivers' Amy Locati and staff organized the event and yours truly, Chef Judith Henderson of Flying Aprons Catering of Dayton catered the colossal feed. • “One Of The Best Years”

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Aug 18, 2011

WAITSBURG - Despite losing four combines to accidental fires in the past week, despite dealing with lodged grain and some rust, and despite the prospect of losing some hired help from students and teachers going back to school soon, grain growers in the Touchet Valley aren't complaining about this year's harvest. "This is one of the best crops we've had in recent memory," said Guy McCaw of 4MC, one of the area's largest growing operations in the area stretching over 70 miles and 18,000 acres fro...

  • The BURG

    Jane Butler, Guest Column|Aug 18, 2011

Paved Or Unpaved, Area Roads Have Always Been A Joy To Explore I was going through some old Waitsburg Times, dated March 13, 1885, in a letter to the editor: "Last Saturday, it was so delightfully pleasant to "take a drive --- We, accompanied by Mrs. Times, made a brief visit to the beautiful little city of Prescott. We found the roads in apple pie order, and the town of Prescott showing abundant evidence of animation, owing to the excellent farming weather, but 'few tillers of the soil were in town; still evidences of thrift were manifest in a...

  • Sharing The Harvest

Heart BEAT About Needs & Good Deeds P RESCOTT - Perry Dozier remembers going into the Prescott Lions Club building when he was a kid. The wheat grower and county commissioner whose farm is close to town would go there for Boy Scouts meetings, while his parents would attend dances on the second floor during New Year's Eve. "The Lions hall has been a part of my whole life growing up," he said. So when members of the club approached him with a novel fundraising idea to pay for a new roof and other...

  • A Kiss On Main Street

    Aug 18, 2011

Since Coppei Coffee opened, lots of people have met each other in front of the shop or inside. Some ran into each other by chance, while others said "let's meet at the coffee shop on Main." We've seen handshakes, hugs and kisses in these encounters, so the subject of greetings was already on our minds when a segment came on National Public Radio during a recent drive home from Walla Walla. It was about a German organization proposing a ban on kissing in the work place. The Knigge Society, a German group that advises on etiquette and social...

  • There’s Always The Spigot

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Aug 18, 2011

WAITSBURG - Rick Smith claims he started his non-stop yard sale a few months ago, after he found work as a logger in upper Michigan and decided to get rid of some surplus household goods before moving there. What better way to sell them than in the yard in front of his trailer situated at the very visible corner of Warren and Second (Highway 124). The stuffed animals were in the front row this weekend, seated together on a bench not far from a variety of shop tools flanked by furniture, books,...
