DAYTON - The Columbia County Commissioners last week approved a request by the Mule Mania committee to allow the popular event to be held on Memorial Day Weekend beginning next year. It will continue to be held at the Columbia County Fairgrounds. For the past four years, Mule Mania has run during mid-July. According to committee chairman Les Teel, one of the primary reasons the committee sought a date earlier in the year was hot weather. "We lost between 30 and 50 registered participants...
WAITSBURG - With Councilman K.C. Kuykendall in lone opposition, Waitsburg's City Council agreed to retain the City's current billing arrangement for multi-dwelling utility rates. The decision was in response to previous appeals by Keith Parkins who has converted the Preston Avenue inn into individual apartments and requested a rate break for multiple units sharing one meter. Currently, individual consumers, including occupants of apartments, duplexes and trailers, pay a separate base rate for...
WAITSBURG - Discussion at the August 20 City Council meeting resulted in a decision to modify the municipal code update approved in May that allowed only licensed monument companies to set headstones in City cemeteries. In July, Cindy Hofer appealed to the Council to reconsider the updated code and shared that the cost of hiring a monument company to set a stone was prohibitively high if the stone was not purchased from that company. Hofer said she received an estimate of $30-$50 to set a stone purchased from a local company, but the fee was...
DAYTON - The Columbia County Commissioners last week opened the door to a possible change in power suppliers at county-owned facilities. At their Wednesday meeting, the board authorized County Engineer Drew Woods to develop a request for information (RFI) document to be submitted to Pacific Power, the county's current provider, and Columbia REA. A draft prepared by Woods says, "Because the county is exploring its options for electrical service, standard bid laws do not apply. However, to aid in its decision, the Board of Columbia County...

The new ordinance would identify zones within the county in which production, processing and sales of recreational marijuana would be allowed. It would also set standards for firms licensed to produce and sell recreational marijuana and it would defin...
DAYTON - During their August 20 meeting, the Columbia County Board of Commissioners agreed to sponsor an application seeking a $1.8 million Community Development Block Grant from the Washington State Dept. of Commerce. The funds will be used to install a natural gas "gate valve" near the new Columbia Pulp facility at Lyons Ferry. DAYTON - "I don't coach Bulldogs or Cardinals - I coach kids," said Dan Nechedom. In a way, it's back to the beginning for Nechodom, who co-opped with Waitsburg in 2004 when he first got his feet wet coaching Cross Country. Halfway through that 2004 season, Dayton split off and has had its own team since. This year, due to an increased work schedule for former WP coach Joanna Lanning, Dayton and WP will once again co-op for practices, this time with Nechedom as head coach. A co-op is different...
WAITSBUG - With the Southeast 2B District 9 football league down to four teams, non-league games will dominate the Waitsburg-Prescott Cardinals' schedule this year. And those games will be tough. "This is the toughest schedule we've had since I've been here," said WP coach Jeff Bartlow, who is entering his 16th season as head coach. With Dayton converting to eight-man football, WP's only league opponents this year will be De- Sales, Tri-City Prep and Asotin. The season begins with a road game...
Dear Editor, As a Hospital Board member and Friend of the Hospital I feel that it is important to keep you updated on issues relevant to daily operation of the hospital and the levy. I know that a levy is not a very popular issue, especially following an important school levy which did not pass! Both education and health are very important to our families and communities. In a recent letter to the editor I indicated that the hospital district financially subsidized Booker's operation for the past seven years at an average cost of $397,000 per...

Well, it seems as though I'm running out of summer quite rapidly. School starts next Tuesday. The Walla Walla Fair, long a herald of the break's end, will already be in full swing by the time you read this. The evenings are starting to get a little chilly, and my garden's finally yielding produce. For the most part, the elapsed time was uneventful. I worked from home, started a couple projects, visited family, hosted family, applied for a scholarship or two, baked way too much cake, and hugged...
1. I did it 19 times (including Kindergarten and graduate school). That was enough. 9. I hate shopping for clothes. 8. In high school I wasn't good enough to play football. (The one year I did, I learned things about pain I'd never known.) So when school started, it meant putting on my band uniform. It's not the same. 7. I had to walk a quarter mile to the bus stop and a quarter mile home every day. 180 times a year. With my trombone. 6. Did I mention that I was kind of a dork? Guys like me...
