    Jillian Beaudry, The Times|Aug 30, 2012

WAITSBURG - With the recent conflict in the Walla Walla Valley about library services, is now the time to start thinking about annexing Weller Public Library into the Rural Library District? City Administrator Ran- dy Hinchliffe proposed last week writing a letter to the Walla Walla County Com- missioners and the Walla Walla County Rural Library District Board supporting the idea of creating a regional library district and encour- aging them to include other jurisdictions in the county,...

Whole food is one of life's greatest pleasures. When we eat whole foods, we are getting the food intact with all of the vitamins, minerals and other nutrients that make it a balanced food, rather than the bits and pieces that remain after refinement and processing. If you're trying to eat a healthier diet, relying on whole foods is a great place to start. Instead of an energy bar for breakfast, have a pear and some almonds. The goal is to decrease the amount of processed foods you eat and increase the amount of whole foods. The late harvest fro...

Ten Years Ago August 29, 2002 The Walla Walla Fair will be a Maiden family affair. This year's Queen of the Walla Walla Fair and Frontier Days, Haley Maiden, and the Parade Marshall, County Commissioner Chuck Maiden, are living proof that the roots of the fair family tree go deep. Haley is Chuck's granddaughter, making her a fourth generation Maiden family participant in the fair. Haley's aunt Pam (Maiden) Hannah was a fair queen in 1975, and her aunt Linda (Maiden) Schmidt was the queen in 1985. Chuck served on the fair board for nine years....

The wheat market is hunting for a mandate. The highest price of the summer to date is now well more than a month back, on July 23 for Chicago December futures at $9.47 per bushel, and July 20 for white wheat delivered in Portland at $9.05. This week's Chicago is around 89 cents lower and Portland is down about 42 cents. The chart pattern is a (relatively) slow decline in a 20-25 cent range. It is sometimes useful to look at the wheat market as if it is an independent creature with emotions, motivations and ideas. Right now, the crittur is wan-...

ANIMAL CONTROL CODE WAITSBURG - Last week, the Waitsburg City Council discussed changes to the Animal Control Code. The code is in draft form and suggested updates include turning outstanding fees over to collections. Also, City Administrator Randy Hinchliffe said the Humane Society will now act as animal control within the city. The cost should be similar to what the city paid to have an animal control officer - a position that was eliminated months ago. The council also set fees for nuisance dogs to $100, $200 and $300 per offense, per dog....

  • Dear Editor,

    Aug 30, 2012

I really appreciate the time, effort and caring that Troy with Touchet Valley Repair put into helping us last week when we broke down in Waitsburg. One never knows who can be trusted in those situations and I really appreciated the amount of time he spent trouble shooting our problem. He was obvi- ously not trying to make a buck! He could have really stuck it to us, but he was so fair and profes- sional. Thank you so very much.. Terri Stillwaugh Caldwell, Idaho...

  • To The Editor,

    Aug 30, 2012

Editor's Note: This letter to the editor is from Jim Davison, who was featured in the Heartbeat Column in the Aug. 23 edition for his volunteer work on the press box at the Waitsburg High School football field. It is apparent that more questions should have been asked when The Times called requesting to take my picture. Regard- less, thanks to you and the others who had kind words to say on my behalf in the article which accompanied the requested picture. The real story is, in this case, I just happened to be the person chosen to represent all...

Fall sports are here! Not everyone in the valley has an athlete on a school sports team, but there's little question many families in Prescott, Waitsburg and Dayton are excited about the coming sports season. And with good reason. Even those who do not have a horse in this race, so to speak, are psyched about the win- ning spirit they hope will carry over from a year ago when the Cardinals launched their best football season ever, the Tigers started their ascent to the state crown as well, the Bulldogs foot- ball team began their best season...

  • Dayton Gets Grant Money To Reduce Abuse

    Morgan Smith, The Times|Aug 30, 2012

DAYTON - The Colum- bia County Coalition for Youth and Families is one of 60 organizations nation- wide to receive a Drug Free Communities grant from the Office of National Drug Control Policy. The grant money will bring $ 125,000 a year for five years, a total of $625,000, into the Dayton community to help reduce the use of drugs and alcohol by minors. The coalition applied for this grant last year as well, but missed being chosen by one point on the scale. Grant applications are scored by peers and the 60 top-scoring grants receive funding...

  • District Won’t Annex City

    Jillian Beaudry, The Times|Aug 30, 2012

WAITSBURG - The city of Waitsburg would like to annex into Fire District 2, but the fire commissioners aren't ready to let that happen any- time soon. "The city is just looking for ways to cut the budget," said Commissioner Jim Leid. "We are already paying the fire chief." The fire district was created by the county tax payers in April 1945, according to the Walla Walla County Assessor's Office. Since that time, the taxpayers' money has funded the district with help from the city of Waitsburg through a mutual aid agreement, said Waitsburg City...
