WAITSBURG – With no responses to the first set of bid requests for water line repairs under the Touchet River Bridge, Waitsburg’s city council voted to resubmit and try again. If repairs are not made soon, they will be pushed to next year and may happen while the Main Street Bridge is under construction, potentially causing water pressure issues. A leaking line under the Touchet River Bridge, located near Preston Park, was discovered last year, but does not seem to be getting any worse. It is...
DAYTON – Rev. William B. Graham wore many hats throughout the three decades he spent living in Dayton, where he served as pastor, mayor, council member, and concerned citizen. Ten Years Ago September 7, 2006 Yesterday, Elzy Conover marketed his half crop, about five months earlier and 200 pounds lighter than typical, forced out of Blue Mountain pasture by the Columbia Complex fire. “It took a big bite,” said Larry Conover, Elzy’s son, of the economic impact the fire will have on the ranch. Last year the Waitsburg Commercial Cub worried that traffic restrictions because of bridge construction would deter salmon lovers from making the jaunt to Waitsburg for the annual Salmon Barbecue. This year the bridge is compl...

Any American political strategist or reporter -- I’ve been one for more than four decades -- loves the map: That’s the electoral map that decides the presidential election every four years. Each of the 50 states is awarded electors based on its members of Congress, essentially by population; Washington, D.C., for example, gets three votes. In almost all states it’s a winner-take-all system; there are 538 votes nationally, it takes 270 to win. For about two thirds of the states, including the biggest, California and Texas, the outcome is a nea...
“I went on a really fun field trip today,” our son informed the family over dinner after a science trip to a local river. “We got to row, but not in actual racing shells.” “Racing shells?” my husband inquired. “Well, they were really just rowboats, but rowing with my friends reminded me of the book ‘The Boys in the Boat’ that we were listening to in the car.” Daniel James Brown’s recent bestseller may not have yet made it onto the radar of most seventh-grade boys; it is certainly not a book my son would have chosen for himself. His introduc...
Dear Editor, The actions of Waitsburg City Council during the last few months have been an embarrassment to our city. We are particularly ashamed of the way certain members of our Council, at the last council meeting, appeared to be orchestrating a witch hunt against our City Administrator, Randy Hinchliffe. They had plenty of criticism for his purchase of a $20,000 piece of equipment, however, not one word of appreciation for the $130,000 grant that he successfully obtained. This must stop. Deanne Johnson Waitsburg...
Dear Editor, A couple of weeks ago my wife and I stopped in Waitsburg to stretch our legs on our long wander from northern Washington to our home in southern Utah. We visited the antique store, saw sidewalk art, and had iced tea and cookies at the hardware store. My wife and I like buildings and you folks have a bunch of interesting houses. We spent more time walking around looking at nicely crafted structures. At some point I walked back to our truck parked on Main Street to get something. Just as I pulled my head back out of the cab I was...

WAITSBURG – Back-to-school time can be both hectic and expensive, but the Waitsburg Home and School Association (HASA) is doing what it can to ease the burden for local parents. This year Waitsburg students can forget about trying to find all the items on the traditional back-to-school supply list. Instead, they are told to arrive with only a "backpack and a smile." For the second year in a row, Waitsburg's HASA has purchased all the school supplies needed for Waitsburg students. Last year, HASA...

This recipe is listed as great for low carbers. Even tho it is warm outside, I need to have something hot to eat occasionally. This is very tasty, quick, and cooks on the stove top. I’ll add my notes at the end. I didn’t submit a picture when I made this as I used purple cabbage and it would have looked like a dark mess;) 1 stick butter 1 small head cabbage 1 small onion chopped 1 pound smoked sausage, sliced into round pieces 1 (15 ounce) can diced tomatoes or Rotel tomatoes (if you want it spicy) ½ teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon pepper Melt butte...
