DAYTON - The Bulldogs' last playoff game against Pomeroy was a nailbiter. But in the end, after playing several other games that day, the girls just didn't have it in them. Had they won, Dayton would have gone to state. Still, last year's 5-3 volleyball season was much better than head coach Shannon Turner had expected. "We knew the season would be somewhat of a challenge as well as a building year," she said. "As the season progressed and the girls got some varsity floor time exper...
"Heart Of The Lion" Lives On In 2010 Dayton Team; Bickelhaupt Is New Head Coach DAYTON - During the Bulldogs' preseason training, Coach Dean Bickelhaupt never mentions Andrew Groom by name. He doesn't need to. Groom, the sel f les s 16-year-old Bulldog defensive linebacker who was an inspiration to everyone before he died earlier this year, is always on and near their minds, literally. A decal of his number, 55, appears on the back of their helmets. The number has also been retired until after...
WAITSBURG - Sure WP has lost some great seniors. Who can forget the defensive tackles of last year's middle linebacker James Lehr or the edge-of-your seat touchdowns by wide receiver Lucan Gerke or the rushing scores by slot backs Jace Zuger or Zac Alexenko? Seven players on offense and seven on defense for a total of eight starters who helped give WP its 8-1 season last year have graduated. But Coach Jeff Bartlow's roster for 2010 looks every bit as impressive as 2009, with seasoned captains...
I am a 77-year-old retiree who lives in Dayton. I am very angry at Sheriff Hessler for promoting an ORV law/ordinance that would allow such unsafe vehicles to run through our streets. I can just see our streets in the summer time just full of these dangerous things. This is not what a Sheriff should be doing. This position should be held by somebody who keeps our streets safe and thinks of the welfare of the citizens. This is especially true for seniors. Where is the respect for older people. This law will drive down the value of pr...
I am very appreciative of the wonderful letter from the Reeves attesting to Clarence Stearn's good character. I would like to add an example of Clarence's support for his community. The Weller Public Library participates in the Fall Festival at the Bruce House with a large book sale, proceeds from which help the Friends of the Library purchase new books. In the past this was a bit arduous as the boxes of books are many and heavy and must be hauled down very steep stairs from the second floor storage room above the library. For the last five...
We could easily hold forth for several pages about the importance of our educators. At a time when school is underway or close to resuming, there probably wouldn't be enough room to describe the challenging task teachers, staff, coaches and volunteers undertake for the next 40 some weeks. Parents in the Touchet Valley place their kids in their hands, knowing instructors will do their utmost to help them learn, grow and engage in meaningful pursuits in the classroom and on the sports fi...
In this edition of the Times, we're bringing our readers a special fall sports preview section. It's an outlook for the coming season during which we hope to cover as many of the Cardinals/Tigers' and Bulldogs' football, volleyball, soccer and cross country events as our small staff can get to. We know we'll get cooperation from the coaches to report the results from the ones we can't attend. We hope to use our new website - www.waitsburgtimes.com - to bring you the scores as soon as possible after the games or events, so you don't have to...

DAYTON - In what could be seen as a breakthrough on the part of the Columbia County Public Hospital Board of Commissioners, member Ted Paterson acknowledged last week that the board "may have become complacent" in the face of recent management practices, staff decisions and unsatisfactory work environment within the system. "Maybe we didn't ask the right questions," he told the audience at the Catholic Church in Dayton on Thursday. "Maybe we were just looking at the dollar signs and seeing, 'it's black, it's black, it's black.'" Paterson spoke...
STARBUCK - Diane Lusk liked the way Bob Bulota always greeted her when he called from one of his far-flung trips. "Hello Mrs. Lusk, this is Bob Bulota," he would announce to the Starbucks post master in tongue-in-cheek formality. Lusk still gets calls from someone who sounds just like Bob. For a split second, her heart rises at the thought that it might be her friend of eight years - the one who regularly brought her apples, pears and flowers at work. But it's wishful thinking. Bob has been...
