    Ken Graham, the Times|Sep 6, 2018

DAYTON-The mural on the west side of the Broughton Land Co. has received a much-needed restoration, which included repair to the wall and repainting to brighten the mural images. Kennewick mural artist Don Brown is almost finished with the work. He was selected by the Dayton Development Task Force, which raised nearly $10,000 for the project. Much of the funding came from donors to the Task Force's B&O tax incentive program. Brown repaired the stucco and bricks on the lower part of the wall in e...

  • Pioneer Portraits

    The Times|Sep 6, 2018

Ten Years Ago-September11, 2018 Why a person would undertake the training, discipline, and dedication to enter a race which will take over 16 hours to complete and involving a 2.4 mile swim, bicycling 112 miles, and running a full marathon of 26.2 miles, is a question Waitsburg High grad Tammy (Otterson) Wood and her husband, Scott, get asked regularly. Scott and Tammy have been doing triathlons about 10 years. Among triathletes, the ultimate is to do an ironman, she said. “It’s a goal that takes a few years to arrive at." Over 45,000 mar...

  • Waitsburg is Dealing with Wastewater Challenges

    Randy Hinchliffe|Sep 6, 2018

I want to first take the opportunity to assure City of Waitsburg residents that our current situation with the wastewater treatment plant is not something to panic about. Yes, the pressing system needs to be replaced, but no, we will not be dumping directly into the river; in fact, that would never be an option. Nor are you going to have to stop flushing your toilets anytime soon. We have reached a point with our pressing system where we are looking at an emergency-type situation IF we do not get it replaced, but we are currently working on...

Dear Editor, Congresswoman McMorris Rodgers has many noteworthy achievements. She has had 10 bills passed out of the U.S. House of Representatives, five of which have cleared the Senate and been signed into law by the President. Did you know she fought for and passed the Faster Care for Veterans act, authored major new laws to help people with disabilities to become independent, helped pass legislation to protect our Columbia and Snake River dams, won expanded support for the Spokane Teaching Health Center and community clinics to bring more...

  • Trade Wars Hit Cherry Growers Hard

    Don C. Brunell|Sep 6, 2018

Last April, Washington wheat, apple and cherry growers hoped U.S. and China trade negotiators would resolve differences and prevent imposition of damaging tariffs on our state’s leading crops. Unfortunately, that did not happen, and the costs are adding up. Thousands of Washington farmers now find themselves on the front lines of a battle between the two largest economies in the world. Here’s what has happened so far. Earlier this year, President Donald Trump imposed a 25 percent tariff on $34...

  • The Old and New West of Tobias Sauer

    Carolyn Henderson|Sep 6, 2018

Things have changed a bit in the Old West over the last two centuries. While we don't ride horses as much as we did then, we still admire the life of the cowboy, the vast expanse of mountains and prairie, and the wildlife of the area. This is the New West, a subject close to the heart and hands of oil painter Tobias Sauer. Sauer has spent a major portion of his life residing near the route taken by the Lewis and Clark Expedition. "I paint scenes from the West because I love it," says the Coeur...

BURBANK—he Dayton-Waitsburg football team dropped its first game of the season Friday night on the road at Columbia-Burbank, 25-8 The Coyotes scored touchdowns in the first and second quarters to take a 13-0 lead going into the half. But the DW defense stiffened up in the third quarter and held CB scoreless. “We came out tentative and confused with the Columbia-Burbank Defense,” said DW Coach Troy Larsen. “At half time we were able to coach the kids up on what CB was doing and had a really good third quarter.” On the first play of the fourth qu...

    Brianna Wray, the Times|Sep 6, 2018

WALLA WALLA-Waitsburg's own Grace Coulston won grand champion at the Walla Walla Fair & Frontier Days held Aug 29-Sept 2. The winning goat, Grace's Red Princess is an example of a Boer Goat's stout frame. Coulston says working with the goats is fun, but her favorite part of showing livestock at the Fair is "all the people I get to meet and how much everyone's supported me in my passion. And how nice everyone has been." Coulston discovered raising livestock with the encouragement of a family...

    Brianna Wray, the Times|Sep 6, 2018

Waitsburg-A blessing box has been installed in front of the Waitsburg Christian Church. In it, individuals in need will find food and hygiene products. This community resource is "open to all with no judgment or questions asked," said the church's Senior Pastor, Matthew Wyatt. • Cashew Chicken Salad Sandwiches

    Teeny McMunn, the Times|Sep 6, 2018

I found this recipe in the Costco Connection and I liked that it used apple and cucumber. Remember the chicken poppy seed salad? It seems several chicken recipes have nuts and fruit. That one had pecans and grapes. I didn't make this one yet but will later. For me, this will be used as a salad. A few notes on cashews: Cashews are packed with antioxidants, vitamins E. K. and B6, and minerals such as copper, phosphorus, zinc, magnesium and iron. Many of these can be hard to find in other foods....
