DAYTON – When renovation of Dayton General Hospital is complete next year, the main entrance to the facility will be on the north side of the building, near the former emergency room entrance. During a tour of the construction late last month, hospital officials described the work underway in Phase 1 of the renovation project, which includes constructing...

Ten Years Ago Sept. 14, 2006 Anyone fortunate enough to have known Roberta Stonecipher Broom Adams – and there were many – can imagine her take on being named Pioneer of the Year at the 34th Annual Pioneer Fall Festival, which will take place this coming Sunday in Waitsburg. She’d laugh and exclaim “Really?! Me?! Ya shouldn’t have!” Roberta was one of Waitsburg’s citizens known for the many firsts in her life. She was the first female Student Body President At Waitsburg High School, and the first Queen of the Days of Real Sport. And fittingly...

For nine years in the 1980s and ‘90s I lived and worked in Albuquerque, N.M. It’s a big sprawling city with a large Air Force base and a large university. Traveling north from Albuquerque will take you into some of the most beautiful country in America: an area that includes Santa Fe, Taos and Los Alamos. In 1994, two years before I moved to Dayton, a guy named Gary Johnson ran for governor of New Mexico as a Republican. I voted for him and he won, though those two facts must surely be unconnected. Right? Johnson had never run for elected off...
Libertarian Gary Johnson's plan for capturing the White House hinges on voters following through on polls suggesting they dislike the Republican and Democratic presidential nominees more than in any election year in history. "You know how crazy this election cycle is?" Johnson told Chris Wallace on "Fox News Sunday." "I might be the next president." First, Johnson, the former Republican governor of New Mexico, has to be allowed into the nationally televised debates that for now are set to...
Dear Editor, Most of the conversations in this town are told through someone, not to someone. Conflicts need to be resolved and then told to the public. It is a sad day when things don’t get resolved. It makes this town weak and incapable of having a strong sense of community. Conflict should be a learning process not the end of relationships. The seed of bitterness has been planted. Now let’s see if it keeps growing. I am disappointed in our city. We need to resolve issues and agree to disagree and move forward. I am hoping for change. Cin...
Dear Editor, Citizens, corporations/companies, and developers interested in Waitsburg, BEWARE!! New “normal” established whereby “MAJORITY” declared by elected officials as he/she who protests loudest, acts rudest/profane/interruptive, and/or displays most signs. Officials acknowledge Waitsburg laws indicate how development should be handled, with Council and Public input only after examination by city staff and planning commission; and that city’s treatment of Nestle was unusual, not how other developments are addressed probably not ethical,...

Wyatt is a 1998 graduate of Waitsburg High School....

MILTON-FREEWATER – Dayton-Waitsburg went on the road in the first game for its new combined football program, but fell to a Mac-Hi team that hadn't won a game in more than a year. Four turnovers and 16 penalties marred an otherwise strong performance, in which many players are learning a new system. D-W was also missing some veteran players who will likely return later this year, including running back Travis Crockett and receiver Ben Kleck. D-W jumped out to an early lead with a f...
DAYTON – The Dayton HS Volleyball Team returns this year with nearly the same lineup that finished 11-5 last season. So hopes are high for an even better result for coach Shannon Turner's team, which will return seven varsity players from last year. But last year's lone senior, Madison Mings, leaves big shoes to fill. "Her competitiveness will definitely be missed on the court this season," Turner said of Mings. "She was an all-around key player." Turner will have three seniors returning to t...
WAITSBURG – The Waitsburg varsity volleyball team should be significantly improved from last year, featuring a veteran team of seven seniors and juniors. The lineup includes six-foot-two-inch senior Analisea Araya and six-foot sophomore Devon Harshman. "We're ahead of where we were at last year in terms of what we're able to do offensively and our defense is working hard to be disciplined enough to be in position so that they can read and react to the other team," said Waitsburg coach Angie P...
