CLARKSTON - WP's Cross Country team kicked off their season with a 2.6 mile Asotin XC Island Run at Chief Timothy park in Clarkston, Wash. on Sept. 13. "Being the first race of the season - and ever for some runners - we didn't set a lot of expectations. Still, I was pleased with the day and we all gained some information and experience on which we'll keep building," said Coach Dan Nechedom. Sophomore Emily Adams placed fifth out of 33 women runners with a finish time of 18:36.10. Adams placed...

  • Nechodom Hired as WP X-C Coach

    Dena Wood, | The Times|Sep 18, 2014

WAITSBURG - Due to a lack of turnout, Dayton High School has opted not to offer cross-country to its athletes this year. At the beginning of the season, WP and Dayton students practiced together under former Dayton cross country coach Dan Nechodom. When only two Dayton students signed up for the season, Dayton chose to cancel their program. Waitsburg's school board approved the hire of Nechodom as Waitsburg Cross Country coach at their Sept. 10 board meeting. WP currently has six cross-country a...

    Ken Graham, | The Times|Sep 18, 2014

WAITSBURG - The Waitsburg-Prescott football team ran over White Swan Friday night in their home opener, defeating the Cougars 42-18. The game featured a new look for the Cardinal offense, with Jacob Dunn starting at quarterback and last year's starter, Owen Lanning, moving to slot back. Lanning had four catches for 78 yards. He scored two touchdowns, including one on his only rush from scrimmage on the game. "He became an instant success in space and has that speed we need," WP Coach Jeff...

  • Local Author Studies Waitsburg’s Past

    Dena Wood, The Times|Sep 18, 2014

WAITSBURG - After eight long years in the making, Sandra Torres' "baby" will make its debut at this year's Pioneer Fall Festival, where Torres will be signing and selling copies of her recently published book, The Waitsburg Family 1858 - 1900: The Beginning. The book focuses on the individuals -- and their connections to one another -- that made up Waitsburg (or more accurately, Waitsburgh, with an "h") in the town's earliest days. Torres moved to Waitsburg with her husband Lupe eleven years...

  • WAITSBURG FFA REPS ADDRESS GLOBAL AG LEADERS

    Emma Philbrook, The Times|Sep 18, 2014

WAITSBURG - "There were men from sixty different countries. They were all in business suits, and I'm just walking around in my boots, and I'm like, 'I don't belong here.'" In some ways, Waitsburg High School senior Mikala DeRuwe had a good reason to feel out of context. She, WHS graduate Kimmie Hamann, and WHS FFA advisor Nicole Abel were about to give a presentation before global leaders in the agriculture industry. The venue would be the sumptuous Grand Ballroom at San Francisco's Westin St....

After returning to the states nearly a year later, McQuary worked in Alaska for a few months, and then spent three years working for a cruise ship line in Hawaii, mostly working with youth programs. She later spent...

  • Jay’s Garage Now Open

    Ken Graham, | The Times|Sep 18, 2014

DAYTON - If you search online for "Jay's Garage" you'll find more information that you could possibly want about former Tonight Show host Jay Leno and his massive automobile collection. But in the Touchet Valley, Jay's Garage has become the go-to place for car and light truck repair, after only two months of existence. And there are no TV stars in sight. Dayton resident Jay Ball opened his new shop at the Port of Columbia in early July. (It's in the former home of Hammerdown Fitness.) He's...

  • What About a Local- Only Union?

    Sep 18, 2014

Dear Editor, In their periodic collective bargaining sessions, our School Board and the Walla Walla Valley Education Association (WWVEA) determine the quality of our schools, the services to be offered for children, and the priorities for levies funded by local taxpayers. Typically, the union works to reduce accountability, increase costs, and control service levels. For that service, the union requires all teachers to either become a member or pay a representation fee deducted automatically by the district. If the teacher elects to become a...

  • Cooper’s Conduct Questioned

    Sep 18, 2014

Dear Editor, Sheriff Turner has undergone a great deal of scrutiny during his tenure. Much has been printed and his opponent and his supporters have been given the opportunity to put their own spin on the stories. I would argue that there is a pattern of behavior by Sheriff Turner's opponent which should concern voters. He is touted as fiscally conservative. says something different to me. His many years of experience in law enforcement is cited. Not reading and understanding the importance of office communication regarding the Ortega Law as...

  • EMMA PHILBROOK: STUDENT LIFE

    Sep 18, 2014

Who hasn't, at one point or another, contemplated starting a small business of their own? I think we all have a little bit of entrepreneur inside us, and sometimes it insists on coming out. I'm an enterprising person by nature, but I've never come up with a product of saleable appeal. The one original idea I did bring to market ("Leprechaun Lemonade", dyed a festive shade of green for Saint Patrick's Day) was a drastic fail. Now, several years later and having taken an economics class, I...

  • Ken Graham: From the Publisher

    Sep 18, 2014

On a recent trip to the big city up north, I picked up a copy of "The Inlander," Spokane's well-established and popular alternative weekly newspaper. It's available free in places ranging from hipster downtown coffee shops to suburban Burger Kings and supermarkets. Near the back of my copy was a twopage spread called "The Green Zone." There I saw ads for three recreational marijuana shops (one was having a grand opening that week), three medical marijuana cooperatives and one store specializing...
