DAYTON-There is a for sale sign on Kathy and Craig George's lawn on S. 2nd St. in Dayton. Craig George has announced that he will resign his post early next year as Dayton's mayor. He told The Times that he and his wife, Kathy, will be moving to Tucson, Ariz., to enjoy the health benefits of living in a drier climate. He said they are in the process of having a home built in the gated community of Saddle Brooke Ranch, north of Tucson. "This is the first time we have really bought anything for...
WAITSBURG-In August 2017, while many people were traveling elsewhere to see a solar eclipse, Barney Powell and his wife made a point to travel through Waitsburg. "We stopped because I was interested in my ancestor, E.L. Powell," Barney Powell said. "We got a copy of the July newspaper with an article in it about E.L. Powell." The article, "Fun with History," by Dena Martin, describes a colorful character who had many interests. He was the youngest man in the state to hold the position of Odd Fel...

Of the funds granted, $27000 is available to the...
DAYTON—On a 2-1 vote, the Board of Columbia County Commissioners on Monday upheld a one-year ban from the Columbia County Fairgrounds for Dayton resident Lee Ann Literal, following an administrative hearing. County Facilities Maintenance Director Dave Finney imposed the ban on July 23 after two incidents in which Finney claimed Literal was in...

Dear Editor, My professional law enforcement career has been spent patrolling the highways of the great State of Washington. Twenty-five of my 33-and-a half-years with the Washington State Patrol have been spent serving and protecting the citizens of this great county. Being a Walla Wallan is, literally, in my blood. My uncle, Art Klundt, was Sheriff of Walla Walla County for 16 years. His son, my cousin, Kenneth, was Sheriff for four years. I was born and raised in Walla Walla. In my 56 years, I’ve had both successful and failing attempts a...
Dear Editor, Dain and I would like to thank everyone who stopped by the “Nysoe for County Commissioner” booth at the recent Columbia County Fair. It was great to be on the main fairway to see and greet so many people. The weather was perfect, and while Dain was busy listening to people express their thoughts about problems in the county, I had a fun time giving out honey sticks with little notes on them saying “BEE WISE, VOTE FOR NYSOE” Some of the kids came back many times, getting a handful for their “brother,” and that was great because we...
Dear Editor: I write urging readers to vote for Dain Nysoe as Columbia County Commissioner. As noted by previous writers, Dain Nysoe is uniquely qualified by his education, his leadership in economic development, and by his keen perspective on our county as a fourth-generation resident. To get things done as a county-level leader today, these factors are necessary and important. And so is character. I know Dain well. As cousins, we grew up together on what was a larger Donohue farm during the 1950s and 60s. We hauled hay, drove trucks and...
Dear Editor, Please elect Everett Maroon to represent the 16th Legislative District in Olympia. A 1992 graduate of Syracuse University, he is devoted to public service and is eminently qualified to serve. Before moving to Walla Walla, Maroon was the lead manager for ORC Macro’s Interface Design and Evaluation Group, responsible for the transition of many public health and health research systems to the internet. In 2003, he won the company’s Employee of the Year Award. Maroon is now the executive director of Blue Mountain Heart to Heart. Und...
Dear Editor, This is a letter of thanks and acknowledgement. We staff members at Booker Rest Home were overjoyed with how our wonderful community pulled together to help our residents. On Friday, Sept. 7, BRH (Booker Rest Home) was able to take 21 residents to the Columbia County Fair. This was an unprecedented number of residents to go on an outing. This feat would have been impossible without the support of the Columbia County Fair Board. The Fair Board accommodated the various needs of our residents and staff to make this a successful...
Long before there were machines, there was – and still is – the human hand. And as miraculous and wonderful machinery is, it does not begin to compare with the creativity of the hand, impelled by the human heart and brain. For Portland potter Dave Raynalds, ceramic plates, platters, and even globes, benefit from the direct interaction of clay and hand. Raynalds specializes in a technique call slab-built ceramics, which involves hand shaping clay – as opposed to using the pottery wheel – into it...
WHITE SWAN-The Dayton-Waitsburg football team got its first win in over a year Friday night, swamping White Swan on the road, 38-6. The win came as coach Troy Larsen shuffled his offense, focusing almost completely on the running game. Brayden Miller switched from receiver to quarterback and found success leading the running attack. Another former wide receiver, Chris Andrews, moved to the backfield as well. In all, DW rushed for 320 yards in the game. "We had a lot of student athletes wanting...
WAITSBURG-In spring of 1948, The Waitsburg Times published a succinct article about a 24-year-old male who was killed in a motorcycle accident. Little did they know at the time, there was more to the story. Fast-forward to the contemporary Times. Our Waitsburg office recently received a phone call asking if our archives were available for the perusal regarding one of Waitsburg's lost sons. Our physical archives are bound and well-worn, as they are regularly referenced for our Pioneer Portraits...
You know what a Whoopie Pie is, don't you? I thought everyone knew, but I thought everyone knew what a Pecan Sandie was also. I was wrong. Here is what the web said: "The whoopie pie is a U.S. baked product that may be considered either a cookie, pie or cake. It is made of two round mound-shaped pieces of chocolate cake, or sometimes pumpkin or gingerbread cake, with a sweet, creamy filling or frosting sandwiched between them" I received a recipe in my email, using Red Velvet cake mix, with the filling being marshmallow crème. There was a...
