I ran into a fellow chef at the farmer's market this weekend who grows big, voluptuous red chili peppers. We talked of food trends and what's in and out for the approaching fall season. As we parted, he handed me a pinch of chili pepper flakes. This got me thinking, "How could I use these pepper flakes best in tonight's dinner menu?" Before leaving Walla Walla, I swung by the supermarket for a bottle of inexpensive cooking sherry and a pound of Andouille sausage. Driving along U.S. Highway 12, I saw winemakers Jay and Doug standing outside...

Ten Years Ago October 5, 2000 Area fields, some recently seeded, were hit hard by an intense cloudburst Sunday morning that overwhelmed drainage ditches, washing mud and water across roadways. A half to three-quarters of an inch of rain hit in a 30 to 45-minute downpour in the early morning hours, following the quarter-inch of rain that fell over the previous day. Perry Bigelow, Neil Witt, Joe Abbey, Delbert Mock, Frank Bramlett and Dean Hermanns presented their trophies from the Waitsburg Gun Club in a picture of days gone by. Twenty-Five... Full story

RICHLAND - The Dayton Bulldogs fell to the Liberty Christian Patriots Tuesday night, losing their match in three games 25-21, 27-25 and 25-21. "We just lacked motivation, made too many errors and weren't consistent," head coach Shannon Turner said. "We did not play our game." The team, she said, "will learn from it and move on." After this second loss in a week, the Bulldogs are 1-2 in league competition, but it hasn't been a bad season so far at all. The Bulldogs played a close match against the Asotin Panthers last Tuesday night only... Full story
WAITSBURG - In week three of the regular season, the undefeated Cardinals came alive again and erupted for 40 points against an outmanned but disciplined Elgin team. WP beat the Huskies 40-10 despite a spate of Cardinals penalties and eight fumbles recovered by the home team. "We will not be so lucky in the future," head coach Jeff Bartlow said. "We need to take care of this." Apart from the nerve-wracking would-be turnovers, the Cardinals' victory Friday had a lot more to do with im... Full story
ATHENA - It seemed so close, yet it remained so far away. The End Zone became an obsession for the Bulldogs in their game against the Weston McEwen TigerScots Thursday night. Several times, they came within yards of it but never made it across the goal line for an official score. When the Bulldogs did break the plane, the play was called back because of an offensive holding penalty. Dayton's struggle in the Red Zone was one of the reasons the Bulldogs lost 25-2. But those numbers didn...
PRESCOTT - Just few weeks into the season, the brand new Waitsburg-Prescott Tigers are already ranked third among the state's 25 B2 teams, and perhaps they should be even higher. "We beat the number one-ranked team twice," head coach Rickie Hamilton reWP under his breath during Tuesday afternoon's rout of the Dayton Bulldogs 19-0. "But I'd rather be at the bottom so we don't have a target on our backs." The team Hamilton referred to is Yakima's Riverside Christian Cougars, which the Tige...

Dear Editor: This week we hosted as many strangers as at any time in my memory. Despite a heavy month of civic service activities, organizers of the Cycle Oregon events managed to round up volunteers and make the experience fun for both participants and locals. I was so proud to hear an almost universal heartfelt appreciation for Waitsburg from the many people I spoke with. As they first rounded the corner and came onto Main Street, you could hear, "Wow, what a beautiful little town," and the good words continued throughout the event. Pictur...
Dear Editor, On October 20, 2009, our home was burglarized; jewelry, several guns, liquor, my collection of watches and pocket knives, and our 42" plasma TV were stolen. We credit Deputy Mark Franklin's investigative expertise and dedication to duty for the recovery of a gun he located in Yakima on his own time; and later the TV that was in Milton-Freewater. The TV was later donated to the sheriff's department to be used as part of their security system. Sheriff Hessler sent us a letter of thanks with no mention of the burglary. He has ne...
During this year's Days of Real Sport, this writer was told by a worried official that if Walla Walla and Tri-Cities were to end their pari-mutuel horse racing this year or next-a real possibility-the days of thoroughbred racing at the fairgrounds would end. What to do? Reinvent the event? My thinking: Building on the upcoming Days of Real Sport's Centennial, organize-very soon-a Waitsburg 2013 Committee with 50-75 members, representing as many relevant interests, talents, resources and const... A few weeks ago, the Waitsburg City Council voted unanimously to make a change in the municipal code allowing for a longer permit to use the city's Preston Park. The change was prompted by a request from the Dayton's Farmers Market, which has been interested in using Preston Park for its weekend activities. At the time of the vote, Mayor Walt Gobel said a farmers market here should be called "Wait's Market," a name coined by community activist and former real estate agent Deanne Johnson in honor of the town's founder. Now that Cycle Oregon has... Full story
