WAITSBURG - In a pleasant surprise, the weather cooperated beautifully and the sun shone pink on the hills, providing a perfect backdrop for the hundreds of fish lovers lined up at the Don Thomas Com- munity Building Saturday night. Nearly 600 people attended the annual Lion's Club Salmon Barbeque, all patiently awaiting that slice of pink perfection that only comes around once a year. "I don't know that I've ever had any better salmon," said Lion's Club President Larry Johnson. "They tweak the...

PRESCOTT - Some coaches worry about having enough players to field a team for the season. But that's not Mark Grimm's challenge. He could field two if he had to. The WP Tigers' head soccer coach starts the season with 26 athletes on the roster, including six freshmen and some seven talented forwards/ strikers, giving him plenty of firepower up front. What he doesn't have yet is a solid shield in the back, or a team that has brought together its diverse playing styles into a cohesive syst... Full story
OROFIO, Ida. - "First of all, this was a quality team we played," WP football coach Jeff Bartlow said of the Orofino Maniacs, after his Cardinals suffered a tough 50-20 loss Friday night on the road in Idaho. Bartlow said the coaching staff tried to prepare their team by showing film of the Orofino squad. "Our kids realized it, but did not maybe believe it until the game started and they saw how athletic they were," Bartlow said. "They flew around on defense and made plays." After the Maniacs... ASOTIN - For a while, it all went as well as it could for the 15-man Dayton Bulldogs squad against a tough opponent playing on home turf near the west bank of the Snake River. "It was back and forth," head coach Dean Bickelhaupt said about his team's game against the Asotin Panthers Friday. "We were shutting them down (offensively)." But with a little more than 4 minutes on the clock before the end of the first half, the Panthers broke out of their cage and went on a rampage, clawing up 20 points and leaving the Bulldogs feeling shr... WAITSBURG-The WP Boys cross country team fell just short of earning a ribbon, taking 11th place at Saturday's meet in Clarkston. The Seaport Invite, hosted by Clarkston High School, began with a mile run on the grass around Seaport Park, followed by a gradual decline down a packed dirt trail. Runners then followed an asphalt trail along the Snake River and wrapped up with a big hill at the finish. Freshman Emily Adams, overcame congestion from a cold and a fall during the race to place ninth o...
SPOKANE -- The Dayton soccer team traveled to Spokane over the weekend for two tough matches against northeast Washington schools. After a tough 6-1 loss Friday night to Valley Christian, the Bulldogs cruised to an easy 8-1 victory over Northport. "Scoring opportunities were created by strong defensive play by the back line," said Bulldogs coach D.J. Frame. "The entire back line was strong, with outstanding play by Carlos Oribio, and anchored by Alex Weppler." The dogs took a 3-1 lead into...
SPOKANE - When asked about Saturday's highlights in the Tigers' game against Northwest Christian, assistant coach Jay Potts had just five words. "Ernesto Valdovino and Christian Caro," he said before he went into the many contributions the other players made, and the sweetness of the team's first regular season win against last year's state champions. "We're pretty impressed with ourselves," Potts said about beating the Crusaders at their home field, which he dubbed "a hostile en...
WAITSBURG – In the words of the 1961 hit “Mama Said”, made famous by The Shirelles: “Mama said there’d be days like this, there’d be days like this, Mama said.” That had to be what Cardinal players, coaches and fans were left thinking after a disheartening Sept. 19 loss against the Walla Walla Valley Academy Knights. The first league game of the season started out promisingly enough as Cardinals and Knights battled it out neck-and-neck. With a score of 11 to 11 midway through the firs...

The non-league contest follows a decisive 49-13 drubbing of Liberty-Spangle in Waitsburg last Friday. Defensively, it was Waitsburg's "best game of the year," said Coach Jeff Bartlow. Gabe Ke- ifel and Kurtis Reser each notched 11 tackles. Offensively, all three runningbacks - Kiefel, Brandon Cole and Henry Hubbard, had good games, he said. Brandon Cole...
My little nephews had a sleepover at my house this weekend. On Saturday, I took them to a library talk. The subject matter: simple ways we can help protect the earth and its natural resources. The 45 minute talk covered everything from putting a sweater on rather than turning up the heater, to how to get off catalog mailing lists to conserve paper waste. The cute thing is, the kids asked me to share with you readers some of the things we learned about conservation. So, here I go. Let's start with BYOW, which translates to bringing your own... Just like trying to put a vehicle in gear and drive with the parking brake on, the wheat market is laboring way too hard in its attempt to clear a near-term objective to the upside. It is clear that the supply/demand for US wheat shows the tightest balance in the last five years, but that is not the factor it once was. Production of wheat outside of the US has increased steadily over the last decade, reducing the price impact of our "local" all-wheat production on global markets. That fact, along with a better-than-expected corn production...

Dear Editor, We've just finished our annual task of compiling lessons learned from this year's Pioneer Fall Festi- val. We were again blessed with great weather although maybe a little warm, and the mud storm was nice enough to hold off until everything was put away. We received very positive feedback on the exhibits and displays in our three buildings and for the music and food. We're still trying to find the best balance for the food so that visitors can enjoy our his- toric downtown if they so choose and have something to eat there, or to...

Ladies and gentlemen, the long dry season is over – it’s Knowl- edge Bowl time! Yessiree, for the next seven months, my life (or at least my Friday mornings) will be jam-packed with buzzer-slapping, brain- wracking, inside-joking, cookie-munching fun. As a result, my columns will be similarly stuffed with refer- ences to these antics. Last year, I started writ- ing columns in the middle of the Knowledge Bowl season. The first column I wrote on the topic never reached your eyes – I sent two c...
