WAITSBURG - The Waitsburg City Council last Wednesday night voted 4-1 in favor of enacting a new ordinance that will give the city the ability to shut off city utilities to citizens who don't pay bills or violate the nuisance codes. This new way to handle violators should help the city enforce its rules better, said Randy Hinchliffe, the city's clerk-treasurer. In the past, the city would give citizens a ticket if they didn't follow the rules, but the Sheriff's Office and the city had trouble following through. "We didn't get anywhere with...

DAYTON - Despite two back-to-back losses against Yakima's Riverside Christian, the Dayton Bulldogs believed they made progress as a team against a tough opponent. Riverside Christian beat Dayton 5-0 Tuesday night, the same margin of victory they took away during the two team's first encounter of the season in Yakima Saturday that...
WAITSBURG -- The WP "Boys of Fall" were dressed to kill in their new black home jerseys last Friday night as they robbed the Riverside Pirates blind of their loot, taking no prisoners and winning the game, 49-14. The Pirates started things off with possession, but after three plays, including a Danny Stansell quarterback sack, the Pirates were forced to punt. Beginning their opening drive on their own 49-yard line, the Cardinals wasted no time lighting up the board. Dalton Estes took the first...

On Saturday, I was putting away my garden tools, when up drove my long-time cooking collaborator and friend, Desi Kitchens, arriving from California. Desi is an excellent cook and also a lover of great wine. She and I together remind me of Simca and Julia Child, wandering the Parisian markets searching for the best in food and wine. She had stated in an email that when she arrived, we should go to Jim German's Bar, to Whoop Em Up Café and to Cavu Cellars. At "Whoopee," we ordered a barbecue platter that drooled down our arms in perfect...

This letter is on the subject of "there's always the spigot, City considers new law to turn off water to chronic code violators" as written in the Waitsburg Times on Aug. 18. After reading the article, I decided to attend the City Council meeting Sept. 21. The city is using Mr. Rick Smith as an example of a city code violator. Even though City Attorney Chris Hedine says the new proposed law is legal, I feel it is not morally right. It seems to be a long stretch from a city nuisance to shutting a household's water supply off. This new law may no...
WAITSBURG - I was sitting on the bleachers at the first WP home football game chatting with Jan Cronkhite and she and I watched as Billy Brown made an amazing run for the Cardinals. She knew Billy from around town and told me his history and what a great kid he is. It was amazing to her that he has been so successful even though his life has not been easy. I heard how he left Waitsburg and wanted to return, with the community rallying around him and finding him a new home. In working on my...
On the back page of this week's edition of the Times, we're carrying an update on the legal challenges facing Melvin Bohleen, the elderly Dayton man who will be on trial in December for his involvement in a collision that killed Westside cyclist Sara Eustis this spring. Last week, Bohleen was sued by Eustis' surviving family for unspecified damages, adding to his woes as a suspect. It's a very sad story to cover. Losing a loved one in a bicycle accident - or any accident for that matter -- is a personal tragedy beyond words. Eustis was a...
WAITSBURG -- Wai t sburg High School junior Billy Brown is exactly where he's supposed to be, playing football with the Cardinals each Friday night, selling his hog at the Fair Livestock Auction and in Oma Harting's kitchen looking for cookies. At this time last year, Brown had been transferred from Waitsburg to a foster family in Walla Walla and was playing football for Walla Walla High School. He was well-liked by his new peers in Walla Walla, but after the football season ended, Brown...
