  • Dayton’s Shell Has New Owner

    Dian McClurg, The Times|Sep 30, 2010

DAYTON - Anne Higgins was so excited to get out from behind a computer, be out in the community and meet new people that when she heard the Shell Service Center, right here in Dayton, might be up for sale, she jumped on it. She spoke with Sean Casseday, of Dayton Chemical, a few years ago about the purchase. Since its construction 15 years ago the Shell on Main Street has been owned and operated by Dayton Chemical, but the timing for a change just wasn't right. Then, this year, Casseday ap...

  • Cardinals Beat Irish Second Year In A Row

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Sep 30, 2010

WAITSBURG- For the second year in a row, the WP Cardinals subdued their arch rivals DeSales Thursday night, beating the Irish 27-14. The Cardinals are still undefeated at 6-0 and have passed one of the biggest hurdles of the season in their league line-up. "It was a great football game," head coach Jeff Bartlow said. "It was very sweet." Although it wasn't last year's edge-of-your-seat nailbiting victory that ended nine years of defeats against the Walla Walla team, Thursday's win did not come easy. Yet the Cardinals dominated for most of the g...

  • Judith Henderson’s Wine & Country Living

    Sep 30, 2010

I recently stopped at Harvest Foods for a few lemons and then headed for home. As I turned the corner, I saw my 88-year-old father standing at my door. He had just driven all the way from Bethel Island, California, out in the Sacramento Delta, to visit me in Dayton. There he stood, in his familiar khaki pants and red Hawaiian shirt, sporting a goatee and giving me the peace sign. Dad was a Merchant Marine during World War II. He sailed the Pacific from San Francisco to Hawaii, barely escaping the bombing of Pearl Harbor, and he loves to c...

  • GREEN GIANT TO BE SPRUCED UP

    Sep 30, 2010

DAYTON - The image of the Green Giant laid out in pavers on a hillside south of Highway 12 will undergo some cleaning and retouching this weekend. The image symbolizes the history of Waitsburg and Dayton as historic Green Giant towns when the company's canning plants were still in operation in the Touchet Valley. Owner and creator Gary Lowe says he can use a hand with the replacement of the patio pavers that form the large image and is hoping high schoolers will volunteer to refresh the Green Giant's shape. Volunteers will gather at the city...

Columbia County Sheriff's Deputy Don Foley, who has been leading the missing person's investigation, said no sign of Bulota or his remains turned up in the last-ditch effort to findhim. • Mustangs Trample Patriotsnumber

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Sep 30, 2010

WAITSBURG - In an impressive hometown season opener, the Waitsburg-Prescott Mustangs last Wednesday took Liberty Christian to the wood shed for a punishing 20-0 victory that bodes well for the rest of the middle school football season. "I was proud of the kids," head coach Jim Leid said. "They did well." In the opening minutes, with the Patriots in possession, Luke Alexenko brought down a Patriot running back for a loss of two yards. His tackle was followed by two more tackles from Alex B...

  • Training Pays Off As Local Runners Improve Their Times

    Sep 30, 2010

DAYTON - Dayton cross country runners did well at their league meet at home last week. On Tuesday, Sept. 21, the entire team ran, and took second place. "The Tri-Cities Prep team was intimidatingly large, but several people improved their race pace," said coach Dan Nechodom. "Many of our athletes are learning the truth of the fact that a common training error is to push too hard on the easy days and not hard enough on the hard days." Nechodom has always focused on a developmental approach to the training of his athletes, "but sometimes it...

  • Unbeaten Tigers Defeat 2nd Ranked St. George

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Sep 30, 2010

SPOKANE - The Waitsburg Prescott Tigers are 2nd in the state after defeating the next-to-best team in Washington - St. George - 3-2 Saturday. "It was a very interesting game," assistant coach Bart Baxter said. "They're definitely the toughest team we've faced. It was a very physical game. We're the toughest team they've faced. We've never been that close." WP, the brand-new team in the 2B league from the Touchet Valley, has now beaten the top two teams, Riverside Christian and St. George, t...

  • Irish Edge Bulldogs

    Sep 30, 2010

DAYTON - The Dayton Bulldogs fought the Irish until the end, but they could not hang on to the momentum with which they started their four-game match against DeSales. They won the first game 25-18, but despite the fired-up hometown crowd, they lost each of the last three games by a small point spread 22-25, 24-26 and 23-25. "I wasn't disappointed in the way we played," head coach Shannon Turner said. "But the Irish picked up everything. We made more unforced errors and played too tired at th...

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Sep 30, 2010

Tuesday night, WP beat TCP 25-21, 25-17 and 25-15, a game that saw many subs in warm-up to Wednesday's key game against LC. "We came out really strong, ready to play," head coach Je...

  • Cady And The Cardinals Run Over Riverhawks

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Sep 30, 2010

PASCO - Just how important is Kris Cady to the Cardinals' offense and defense? Well, try sitting him out for half a game as head coach Jeff Bartlow did because Cady breached team rules last week. The difference was night and day. During the first half of the WP game Thursday against the Chiawana Riverhawks' JV team, the Cardinals trailed 6-7. As soon as Cady, who is a running back on offense and a strong safety on defense, and running back Justin Armstrong were back in the lineup, the Ca...

  • Dear Editor:

    Sep 30, 2010

Walla Walla County has been fortunate to have Mike Humphreys, and Bill Jackson before him, as sheriff. Bill White is cast from the same mold. Bill White has helped Mike Humphreys make our sheriff's office extremely effective, even with limited budgets and resources. I have worked with Bill White on hundreds of criminal cases for over 25 years and found his varied experience in law enforcement and knowledge of Washington law extremely helpful. As a law enforcement instructo,r he has been a mentor for new deputies. Bill and his wife Lora ha...

  • Dear Editor:

    Sep 30, 2010

By now, it is obvious that the recent Cycle Oregon event in our community was a resounding success. It took the whole community to accomplish this. It my intent with this letter to single out some of the individuals who agreed to coordinate various parts of that event and make it the success it was. Deputy City Clerk Kelly Steinhoff was the community manager and responsible for the overall event. The site coordinator was Dr. Carol Clarke with the responsibility of table and chair setup an...

  • Dear Editor:

    Sep 30, 2010

I urge Columbia voters to re-elect Sheriff Walt Hessler and vote for Randy Lewis as County Prosecutor. It was Deputy Mark Franklin, now running against the sheriff, who did not believe or understand the Constitution under which citizens have the right to protect their own property and was stopping property owners at the end of 4th Street from taking tractors to help prevent the notorious Dayton complex fire. We remember the horrendous outcome. Franklin was Sheriff Burgland's undersheriff during that "regime" in another editorial by Cla...

  • Valley Is One Community

    Sep 30, 2010

Driving east out of Waitsburg you quickly reach the county line. A small sign on Highway 12 indicates that you're crossing from Walla Walla into Columbia county, but nothing else changes. The hills that mark the Touchet Valley watershed continue in the distance as the wheat fields, grain tanks and farms roll by. For the purposes of this editorial, we'd like to use the valley's seamless landscape as a metaphor for our news coverage of the area and its community. It's in answer to a question we've had from some of our readers why we have "so...

  • Waitsburg’s “Darling” Celebrates 90 Years

    Dian McClurg, The Times|Sep 30, 2010

WAITSBURG - If there's one gal in Waitsburg everybody knows and loves, it's Jane Butler. Though she isn't a Waitsburg native, she has become as much a part of this community as any member of its original pioneer families. "I know everybody who knows her just loves her," said longtime friend B.A. Keve. "She's just a darling, and she continues to amaze me. I don't think there's anything she can't do and do well. So many people appreciate her." Next weekend Butler's friends and family will hav...

  • WP To Fight Irish

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Sep 30, 2010

WAITSBURG - Those who were there last year will never forget the scene. When the final whistle blew, sealing WP's 35-28 victory over DeSales, the home crowd in the bleachers and on the sideline swarmed the field in jubilation. It was the first time in nine years that the Cardinals had beat the Irish, and it seemed to matter more than the outcome of any other game that season except for the playoffs. The two teams are gearing up for another showdown Thursday at 7 p.m. in Waitsburg. Both c...

  • Get Ready For... Mule Mania

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Sep 30, 2010

DAYTON - Already known on the West Coast for All Wheels, there is a good chance that by next year Dayton will become known far and wide for a brand new summer event: Mule Mania. Get ready for mule barrel racing, mule wagon pulling, mule pole bending, mule team penning, mule team roping, "Pony Express" relays and perhaps even some serious chuck wagon cook offs. Dayton will be "All Mules" on the weekend of July 15 - 17, 2011. The Chamber of Commerce and the Columbia County Fairgrounds are n...
