Art and History are the centerpieces of fall event DAYTON - Last year, Dayton Chamber of Commerce Director Brad McMasters said he was surprised that more than seventy people were eligible for the special Art Crawl drawing. To become eligible, participants must visit every Art Crawl venue and get their program stamped. This year, visits to at least fourteen locations, including galleries, restaurants and offices, will be required to qualify for the drawing. McMasters is expecting even more...
I first read about Where’d You Go, Bernadette?, by Maria Semple, in People magazine – one of my favor- ite sources for book reviews. The cover art caught my eye and the review was glowing, but since I’m not a big fan of mixed media books, I didn’t pursue it. Then just recently I saw it mentioned again in Ladies Home Journal – or was it Oprah? – as one of the funniest books some famous person had read this year. I requested it from the library the next day. Bernadette Fox is a beau- tiful, vivaci...
I don't know about you, but life is suddenly feel- ing a bit chaotic. Between school, sports, work and life in general, there seems to be more that needs done than there is time to do it. Since I'm guessing few of us have time to waste (or would at least prefer to "waste" time in an enjoy- able manner) I thought I'd devote this media review to some timesaving Google search and keyboard tricks that I find myself using regularly. I tend to think every- one already knows these little gems, but am...
WALLAWALLA-Behind a phenomenal performance by running back Lowden Smith, the Dayton Bulldogs held their own against DeSales Friday night, losing 35-13 on the road. Smith piled up 300 yards rushing on 43 carries and scored two touchdowns. He also had two pass receptions for 18 additional yards and, to top it off, kicked an extra point. Smith also played the whole game on defense at middle linebacker. "He played every single down," on offense and defense," Coach Dean Bickelhaupt said of Smith....
DAYTON - Dayton's standout forward Ian Smay scored four goals Saturday as the Bulldogs won the second of a pair of weekend matches against Trout Lake in Dayton. The Mustangs broke out to a 2-0 lead before the Bulldogs made their comeback. "It was rewarding to see the team continue to play hard throughout the game and come back from a deficit," said coach DJ Frame. "They are believing in themselves. We were able to keep a fast paced game due to our subs." Forward Roy Han had one goal and an...
DAYTON - Now in his seventh year as Dayton's first soccer coach, DJ Frame is beginning to reap some rewards for his efforts. "Our players are learning to control the ball better," Frame said. So far this year, much of Dayton's offense has come from forwards Ian Smay and Roy Han. Smay and Han each scored hat tricks (three goals in one game) in the Bulldogs' victory over Northport in September. Smay had four more goals in a 5-2 victory over Trout Lake on Saturday in Dayton. Han, an exchange stude...
SPOKANE - A team might win some games and lose some games, but as long as there's progress underneath it all, there's always a reason to be optimistic. That's the conclusion Jay Potts, assistant coach of the Waitsburg Prescott Tigers, drew after this past week's three games that put the soccer team's record about where it was last year at this time. On Thursday, the Tigers beat the Irigon, Ore., Knights 4-1 on that team's home turf. They lost in a tough game against St. George in Spokane 6-2 Saturday and roared back with a 6-0 win over Moses...

I n 1952, I was four years old and recall my father building a roaring fire in the fireplace and sitting back with this chromatic harmonica and playing polka after polka as I twirled around the living room like a whirling Dervish. This evening I built one of those roaring fires in the fire- place, the first of the season. And the only thing missing was dad ripping off a polka and the smell of Mom's apple pie bak- ing in the oven, which sets the tone for this column. Its fall pie time again! This is the season when the men and women of the...
Last week was a great week for wheat prices, even though no news had been the rule for most of the time since the first week of August. On Monday, the last trading day of September, USDA finally gave us something to look at. There's more old-crop corn on hand on farms and in grain elevators than traders expected, according to observers of the USDA-NASS Quarterly Grain Stocks report. In published pre-report surveys, the average analyst guess for on-hand inventories of corn in the US was 688 million bushels. USDA came out with 824 million....

I had a visit from an old friend recently. He came all the way from Viet- nam. Some of you may recall how just a few years ago, I wrote a series of articles for this page about the work of Clear Path International (www.cpi.org). I co-founded this organization with three friends from Bainbridge Island and Vermont. It's mis- sion to help survivors of land mine accidents. For nine years, I was involved in the creation, development and growth of CPI until I left the western part of the state to...
I am excited. On the day this paper comes out, I will turn sixteen. That's exciting, but that's not why I'm excited. On October 16, I will be sixteen years, one week, and six days old. I will also be taking the PSAT (also known as the Painful, Slimy and Atrocious Torture). That is most definitely not why I'm excited. Five days after the afore- mentioned ordeal, I will hopefully have a sufficient number of functioning brain cells to participate in the first Knowledge Bowl meet of the year. That...
A s The Times went to press Tuesday, the federal gov- ernment was shut down and politicians of all stripes were playing the blame game. So were newspaper editorial writers. Some pundits think linking Obamacare to a federal budget extension is a form of hostage taking. Others deem it a totally responsible reaction to the will of the people. We won't jump on any of those bandwagons, mostly because there wouldn't be enough room here once we got started. But we took a few minutes to search some internet news sites, so we could share some of the...
