DAYTON - Dayton maintained their 2-0 league status by dunking the Asotin Pirates in a quick three sets during an Oct. 2 home game. The Lady 'Dawgs are serving up a promising season, standing 8-3, overall. Coach Shannon Turner said the team dominated the first two sets playing focused, consistent sets. "We let the third set get ugly by loosing focus and getting anxious for the match to end," she said. But the Bulldogs pulled it together wrapping up three sets, 25-13, 25-6 and 25-19. The Bulldogs dished out yet another strong night on the...
PASCO -WP Cross Country coach Dan Nechedom said he was pleased with the team's performance on what he calls a deceptively tough course at the Oct. 4 Pasco Bulldog XC Invite. We're watching a few little injuries and bugaboos as the mileage and strength training stack up again this week, but I think they're doing well and enjoying their progress," said Nechedom. Emily Adams placed third in the small schools women's race with a time of 2...
DAYTON - Dayton's Ben Kleck scored two long touchdowns and the Bulldog defense came out strong early, but it wasn't enough to stop a dominant Pomeroy Pirate team. The Pirates rolled to a 58-12 win here Friday night. "We probably played our best first half of football so far this year," said Dayton Coach Jerry Dedloff. "We're improving in some aspects of the game and struggling in others." Ben Kleck scored both Bulldog touchdowns, including a 70-yard pass reception in the second quarter. For the...

"It was nice to see Jacob come back from looking like a...

The entire Kuykendall family attended the dinner under the pretense of providing...
WAITSBURG - There was a definite air of excitement in the Waitsburg cafeteria during lunch on Oct. 2. "I want to try everything!" said an enthusiastic elementary student waiting his turn at a tasting table filled with fresh, locally produced fruits, vegetables, goat cheese and honey. The majority of diners echoed the young man's enthusiasm, though a few of the less daring chose to pass on one or more delicacies, such as roasted beets, kohlrabi, kale chips or goat cheese. Approximately 250...

DAYTON - Randy O. Lewis said he decided not to challenge incumbent County Prosecutor Rea Culwell for that position when the filing period was held in May because he hadn't heard from many local residents urging him to run. But after he received enough write-in votes in the August primary to qualify for the general election ballot, he said his phone began to ring. "A lot of people called and asked if I was going to run," he said. "A lot of them said they didn't know about the write-in rules, or I would have gotten more." In 2010, Lewis lost a...
DAYTON - Seeking her third term as Columbia County Prosecutor, Rea Culwell points to the strong record her office has in bringing criminals to justice. In her 11-plus years as a prosecutor - more than three as a deputy prosecutor in Benton County and nearly eight as Columbia County Prosecutor - Culwell has prosecuted over 1,500 cases. She has been successful in more than 80% of all adult felony cases and has a misdemeanor conviction rate of 57%. Both statistics are above the Washington state average. "In the last four years, I have had a 93%...
PRESCOTT - The Tuxedo Bar & Grill might be located in Prescott, but according to one Waitburg resident, if you stop in on Wednesday's taco night, half the tables will be filled with Waitsburgers. Owner Pam Steuckle says that not only Waitsburgers, but diners from across region - Walla Walla, Waitsburg, Dayton, Tri-Cities and Lewiston -- make a point of dropping by. Dear Editor, On October 1 at the AAUW Candidate's Forum in Dayton, Randy Lewis read a pledge to the citizens of Columbia County if elected prosecuting attorney. This pledge promised, in part, that he would be "civil and courteous," and he would "uphold the honor and dignity of the court." I want to respond this pledge. I am now retired from 16 years as a victim advocate in domestic violence and sexual assault cases. The last seven years were here in Columbia County. I first encountered Mr. Lewis in a hearing for a domestic violence protection...
Dear Editor, It is very obvious! John Turner's term as Sheriff has been filled with conflicts, disagreements, and turmoil. He has had serious confrontations with deputies, county commissioners, and other courthouse elected officials. FACT: Turner had major conflicts with three Senior Sergeant Deputies that had faithfully served Walla Walla County Sheriff's Department for 25 to 35 years-a total of 92 years. Under the previous sheriff's reign, these sergeants had been recognized for their dedication and commitment to the people of Walla Walla Cou...
Dear Editor, Cooper's stories are unraveling As the November election comes near, the stories that sheriff candidate Cooper wants us all to believe are falling apart. At a recent debate Cooper reluctantly admitted he has filed bankruptcy and left his creditors high and dry. So he can't balance his own checkbook, has filed a full bankruptcy, screwed his creditors, drives around in his big black Hummer, and bought a police car for his campaign, but claims Turner is the one who spends frivolously by buying equipment for deputies? And Cooper now...

Dear Editor, I have served with or worked for the past six Walla Walla County Sheriff's including myself. I respect each of the other past sheriff's but in all fairness in my opinion sheriff John Turner has more qualifications and proven talents for the position of sheriff then any of the (including myself) previous sheriff's. I'm glad I voted for Sheriff Turner in the previous election as he has met all my expectations and more. We need a proven leader as sheriff who makes tough decisions regardless of political ramifications and he has...
Dear Editor, Rea Culwell is the best candidate for the office of Columbia County Prosecutor. She is currently serving in this office and has done an outstanding job. I worked for the Richland Police Department for 32 years and was assigned to the Detective Division for 21 years. I have worked with Prosecutors on hundreds of cases, up to and including, homicides. I now work as the Benton County Coroner so I speak from a strong knowledge base. I know the work ethic and qualifications needed for the job. Rea Culwell exceeds all of them. One only h...
Dear Editor, Let's look at Cooper's September 26 Facebook post about his vision and goals for the Sheriff's Office. Provide exceptional law enforcement services. We already provide exceptional law enforcement services, improved in fact due to the training Sheriff Turner has brought to us. Appoint only Washington State certified administrative staff. What is Cooper implying? First, Sheriff Turner and his staff are all Washington State certified. Second, is Cooper saying that if you're not from here you have no value? I wonder if he asks that of...
