  • BE MERRY

    Morgan Smith, The Times|Oct 11, 2012

Every year as the weather shifts from uncomfortably warm to a little chillier than we expect and there is always an awkward transition phase. Sweaters are too warm in the afternoon and t-shirts aren't enough protection from the breeze. It's nice to take this time of year to spend a few nights inside, getting back to the basics. If you've missed the weekly piano performance by Willie Weppler at Mace Mead Works, Friday is a perfect oppor- tunity to make it up. Weppler is a noted young jazz pianist and is exactly what a Friday needs when combined...

  • DRINK WINE

Larry Davidson, Special To The Times|Oct 11, 2012

Squinting into a late September sun and sucking the juice out of some remarkably sweet and juicy chardonnay grapes last week, I pondered the past couple of vintages that Washington had to endure. Mother Nature has not been overly generous the past couple of years towards the wine industry. Both grape growers and winemakers in Washington had to contend with back to back harvests - 2010 and 2011 - that were difficult for the growers and challenging for the vintners to make good wine with what was salvaged off the vines. Some vineyards lost up to...

  • Fire Burns 1,200 Acres

    Jillian Beaudry, The Times|Oct 11, 2012

PRESCOTT - A four- alarm brush fire south of Prescott burned about 1,200 to 1,400 acres the evening of Oct. 2, officials say. District 7 Fire Chief Tim Mayberry said the fire start- ed about 7 p.m. and crews were on scene until about 10:30 p.m. The blaze was located off of Brown Road on the hill above the city. "It was a very-fast mov- ing fire," Mayberry said. "The wind took it and spread it out pretty good." No one was injured and no structures were burned, he said. The nearest resi- dence was about three-quar- ters of a mile away and it was...

  • Dayton Gets Better ER

    Morgan Smith, The Times|Oct 11, 2012

DAYTON - The large sliding glass doors framed with gold-hued curtains are more reminiscent of a comfortable living room than a stiff and imperson- al emergency room. And Chief Operations Officer Shane McGuire said it is intentional. "Nobody wants to come to the ER," McGuire said. But when emergencies arise, McGuire said the staff hopes to minimize as much stress as possible. Little details around the updated Columbia County Health System emergency room were made with local patients in mind. The...

  • Adams Wins Middle School Race

    Jillian Beaudry, The Times|Oct 11, 2012

RICHLAND - WP run- ners kept up with the pack last Saturday in Richland at an invitational against 60 middle school and high school teams full of tough competition. The highlight of the day for WP cross country coach Joanna Lanning was seeing middle school runner Em- ily Adams blaze past the competition in the 2-mile middle school race with first place and a time of 13:06.75. Even suffering from a cold, Lanning said Adams was in it to win it. "Just before the finish line (Adams) passed the runner in first place beating her by less than 2...

  • Dayton Splits, Loses Mid To Injury

    Morgan Smith, The Times|Oct 11, 2012

DAYTON - The Dayton soccer team split the last two games, beating the Walla Walla Valley Academy Knights, 4-1, on Wednesday, Oct. 2, and falling to the Northwest Christian Crusaders, 11-1, on Monday, Oct. 8. The Crusaders put pressure on the Bulldogs right out of the gate. For the first 20 minutes of the game, the Bulldogs were able to keep the ball out of the net but unable to move the ball into Cru- sader territory for long enough to take many shots. With 26:21 left in the first half, the...

  • Cards Wear Out Against Jags

Dan Groom and Jillian Beaudry, The Times|Oct 11, 2012

WAITSBURG - The WP volleyball team fell to WWVA in three sets last Tuesday night in Dayton. The Knights proved too much for the Cardinals, despite an early rush of energy and a solid second set. The Knights were victorious, 25-17, 25-21, 25-11. In the first set on Kison Court Tuesday night, the Lady Cards were pumped up and keeping up with the Knights. Serving errors on both sides of the net added points to the opponents' scores. Great spikes from WWVA's Megan Gregg helped the Knights clinch...

    Morgan Smith, The Times|Oct 11, 2012

DAYTON - The Dayton volleyball team won in three against Tri Cities Prep last Tuesday night in an increasingly close battle. The Bulldogs hit the court with a dominating lead over the Jaguars, winning the first set with a quick, 25-10. • Cards Blow Out Bulldogs, 39-0

    Dan Groom, The Times|Oct 11, 2012

DAYTON - Waitsburg- Prescott crashed Dayton's homecoming party here Friday, breaking open a low- scoring game through one half with 31 points in the second to rout the winless Bulldogs, 39-0. The first half was so ugly-marred by six turnovers, nine penalties (one resulting in a safety), and five first downs between the two teams-it was a wonder either team scored at all. But Waitsburg-Prescott did, thanks to Dayton's holding penalty in the end zone that counted as a 2-point safety, and si...

  • CROPS

    Gary Hofer, The Times|Oct 11, 2012

The fundamental statistics around wheat produc- tion and consumption in the U.S. have a bottom line: USDA projects 698 million bushels as an "ending stock" level of wheat for this year. The con- sumption of wheat as a feed source was larger than expected because of such high corn prices in the last quarter, which is what led to the decrease in the Sept. 1 USDA stocks report that surprised the trade into a 44-cent price rally the day of the report. Beyond that short-term (one-day) rally, the price of wheat has returned once again to the bottom...
