  • Homecoming Game Against Tough St. Georgeby

    Dian McClurg, The Times|Oct 14, 2010

PRESCOTT - Friday afternoon the WP Tigers play at home for Prescott's Homecoming game. Assistant coach Bart Baxter is excited about the game. "It should be pretty fun," he said. "St. George will not want to lose again." The Tigers are ranked second in the state for 2B/1B teams and first in Eastern Washington with their 10-0 record. Friday's game will be against Spokane area's St. George's School, a tough team the Tigers routed earlier in the season 3-2. Saturday the Tigers defeated N...

  • Dayton Soccer Team Getting Stronger

    Dian McClurg, The Times|Oct 14, 2010

DAYTON - The hard-working Bulldogs soccer team hasn't had a win yet, but they're edging closer with each game and just two weeks ago they tied against Northport in a tough game played in Spokane. "Each week the team is just playing better and better," said head coach DJ Frame. "We just keep picking one aspect of the game, and they're getting it. The coolest thing about this team is they are playing absolutely to the end of the game. You can't ask for more than that. They just don't give up." Frame said the team not only plays hard together, bu...

  • Cardinals Fight But Lose To Panthers

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Oct 14, 2010

WAITSBURG - With the regular season slump continuing for the Cardinals, WP head volleyball coach Jesse Buehler is looking ahead to the playoffs as the time her girls will peak as a team. After losing to Dayton last Tuesday, the Cardinals lost in four games against top-ranked Asotin 19-25, 25-20, 20-25 and 19-25 Tuesday. "We were well-prepared for this match," Buehler said. "Each game was fairly close. I'm at a loss as to what the problem was." Although WP lost the first game, they struggled back from an earlier deficit and took their...

  • Valley Teams Here At Home Next Week

    Dian McClurg, The Times|Oct 14, 2010

Cross Country runners in both Waitsburg-Prescott and Dayton continue to keep pace with personal goals and edge their way up the rankings. Waitsburg sophomore Seth Deal beat his personal best and finished a three-mile race in 16:22.88, taking first place at the Richland Invitational cross country meet Saturday. He was up against 94 other runners in that race. WP runners recently experienced a hot day on a slow course, as coach Joanna Lanning put it, at the Pasco Invitational last weekend. H...

  • Dayton Girls Continue Winning Streak

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Oct 14, 2010

WALLA WALLA - The Bulldogs Varsity volleyball team improved its record to 6-3 Tuesday night after beating Walla Walla Valley Academy in four games 25-22, 25-22, 20-25 and 25-20. Although head coach Shannon Turner said the win over the Knights wasn't her team's best of the season, the Bulldogs are keeping up their discipline and momentum this fall. On Thursday night, they beat the Asotin Panthers during their Homecoming match in three games 25-17, 25-21 and 25-22. In their away game against...

  • Bulldogs “Make It A Game”

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Oct 14, 2010

DAYTON - It wasn't the Bulldogs' expectation to win against the undefeated Cardinals in Dayton's Homecoming game Friday. But they hoped "to make it game," as senior Bulldogs running back Dain Henderson put it. And they did. The Bulldogs lost 20-0 to their cross-valley rivals, and if Dayton's offense had been more effective, the margin would have been considerably smaller. The Cardinals scored only once during the first half. Cardinal T.J. Hofer intercepted a first-possession throw by Bulldogs quarterback Colton Bickelhaupt and ran it 27 y...

  • Supports Randy Lewis

    Oct 14, 2010

Dear Editor: I am responding to Norm Passmore's recent letter to the editor about my brother-in-law, Randy Lewis. Randy did run for election against an incumbent judge in Louisiana. Randy knew it would be an uphill battle, but there were issues about this judge that Randy felt were unethical and needed to be brought to light. During the campaign, my dear husband Bob was diagnosed with cancer. My sister Debbie came to Dayton to help Bob and I deal with his cancer. On election day, rather than being in Louisiana, Randy was in Dayton spe...

  • Supports Rea Culwell

    Oct 14, 2010

Dear Editor: I'm a male conservative Republican, at the core of my beliefs are freedom and personal responsibility. I've been a conservative since I turned 18 and have taken my right to vote as a serious duty. I am curious about the number of people in Columbia County supporting Randy Lewis for Prosecutor. It's mystifing that so many would vote in the primary, for a candidate who had not passed the Washington State Bar Exam and has never prosecuted crime. Mr. Lewis is too close for comfort to Charles Thronsen, who has the county's criminal...

  • Supports Rea Culwell

    Oct 14, 2010

Dear Editor: I consider myself a politically responsible citizen and I follow the candidates' news and views closely each election season, especially the local races which will have direct affect on my life. The unfortunate course of many close races results in negative campaigning. Often one side or the other will likely make up something when they were unable to dig up dirt or they simply revert to using vague comments that cast doubt and slander on their opponent. The Columbia County race for Prosecuter is very tight and has become quite c...

  • Against the Income Tax

    Oct 14, 2010

Dear Editor: Are you kidding me? Trusting that the legislature would not increase the income tax and gradually spread the tax to everyone is about as likely a proposition as saying that Viper owners with radar detectors will always obey the speed limit. Alas, have we not learned that whenever you grant the government authority to take a little from a few, then we are granting them license to incrementally take a lot from all? The proponent's siren song of "a small percent tax confined to only the rich" should blow wind to scarlet red flags o...

  • Stephensons Need You

    Oct 14, 2010

Finally, Columbia County residents, Touchet Valley businesses and skiers in the region can let out a collective sigh of relief. The future of Ski Bluewood seems secure. Unless there's a hiccough in their inspection of the resort, Mike and Kelly Stephenson and their group of silent investors from the Tri-Cities will be the resort's new owners by Nov. 1. And if all goes well, the mountain will be open again this year. The Stephensons, who are longtime skiers and passionate skiing instructors, are a Godsend for Bluewood, its ski community and t...

  • Forum Shows Elections Heating Up

    Dian McClurg, The Times|Oct 14, 2010

DAYTON - Close to 200 people packed the Dayton Liberty Theater last Wednesday evening to hear candidates in this year's controversial general election sound off during the annual American Association of University Women forum. "We only have 150 seats, so rarely do we get this many people coming in here," said theater manager Reid Helford. Helford said the last time anywhere close to this many Columbia County voters flocked to the forum was the first time Terry Nealey ran for state representative. Sherrie Flaman Keifer, co-president of th...

  • Stephensons Share Passion For Skiing

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Oct 14, 2010

The first time Mike Stephenson went skiing he hated it. The prospective new co-owner of Ski Bluewood was 18 then and up on Mission Ridge with other members of a church group. He found himself at the top of the hill with no experience and only cold, wet, downhill trauma standing in the way of lunch. "It was horrible, and I was done," he said. "They had to force me to come back and try it again." Eventually, Stephenson, a 53-year-old Kennewick entrepreneur, began to enjoy it. Skiing became such a...
