DAYTON - Residential burglaries are on the rise in Dayton, especially in vacant homes, according to Sheriff Walt Hessler. He is urging neighbors call law enforcement as soon as they see any suspicious activity to catch the burglars. "We've never had this serious of a problem before," Hessler said. "This is the first time." The burglaries in Dayton have become more frequent over the past two or three months, he said. This year, there have been six non-residential burglaries, meaning businesses were broken into, and 21 reported residential...

DAYTON -- Each at the top of their league, the Bulldogs and Tigerscots clashed Tuesday in a match that was more playoff preparation than victory for the Dayton team. The Bulldogs, who fell victim to its own inconsistent focus, lost in four against the Weston-McEwen team. "We had a lot of highs and lows," Bulldogs head coach Shannon Turner said. "They need to learn to focus. But this was good competition. I think the last time we beat them was in 2006 and that was the year they were state...
WAITSBURG - WP's middle school runners saw successes and personal record races on Oct. 12 at a meet at Pioneer Middle School in Walla Walla. WP middle school runner Emily Adams placed first in the girls seventh grade 2-mile race with a time of 12:32. On Wednesday, she shaved nearly two minutes off of her 2-mile time from the previous meet. Coach Joanna Lanning said Adams is now ranked second in state for seventh grade. WP's middle school boys also made strides on Wednesday. Andre Potts placed...

DAYTON - Coming off of a narrow defeat against the Cardinals, the Bulldogs didn't necessarily need a confidence booster going into Friday night's game against Tekoa/Oasksdale/Rosalia. With good reason, they took pride in their performance that nearly knocked WP off its top undefeated position in the league. The Bulldogs were ready for anything. But they got another shot in the arm anyway, handily beating the Nighthawks, 26-6, with a defense that squeezed almost every TOR ground and air campaign...
WALLA WALLA-The WP Lady Cardinals were defeated at the hands of the Desales fighting Irish Tuesday night in Walla Walla. The loss puts them in fourth place in District Nine. The first game got off to a heated start with the Irish blocking two back-to-back attacks from the Cardinals before a third flew out of bounds, giving the Cardinal the lead-off score. A serving ace and a kill from WP's Krystal Harris would jump the Cardinals to a 4-0 lead. Four kills from the Irish, and missed serves and...
PASCO --The WP Cardinals held off an air attack by the Tri- City Prep Jaguars last Friday night to remain undefeated, 7-0. The Jaguars took the opening kickoff and began an opening drive on its own 34-yard line. After completing three first downs that took them to the WP 14-yard line, Jaguar quarterback Evan Whitsett connected with Chris Yackawich for an 11 yard completion that put the Jaguars at first and goal on the 3-yard line. The impenetrable Cardinal defense kept the goal line out of reach...
PRESCOTT -- The Tigers and the Bulldogs measured their progress quite differently in Tuesday's matchup at Prescott. Superficially, the score would put them light years apart. WP swept Dayton away, 12-1. But the fully expected lopsided result masked underlying fundamental improvements for each team as they march toward the end of the soccer season. The Tigers are now 9-1- 2, having recently lost its first regular-season game. The goal is to sharpen its team skills to ready themselves for the...
WALLA WALLA -- The set never changes throughout the play. We're always just a breath away from Marilyn Monroe in her sanctum: in her bedroom, in her dressing room, at her makeup table, eavesdropping on her telephone conversations and listening to her innermost thoughts about fame, relationships, sex and acting. From a seat in the Powerhouse Theater balcony watching "Marilyn: Forever Blonde" is like being a fly on the wall in the "sex goddess'" home, while her life flashes before our eyes from...

I was in Berkeley, Calif., this weekend tasting wine in an unusual bottle shop; inside the Berkeley Municipal Utilities Pump House. Today, owner Peter Eastlake operates his, "Vintage Berkeley," inside the historical building. Vintage is a unique emporium, tacked with wines from around the world, all under $25 a bottle. The day I arrived at Vintage, Bay Area wine professional Eric Sothern of Breakaway Wine Company was giving visitors a taste of a Spanish Tempranillo. For the moment, anything imported goes against everything I stand for in the...
Ten Years Ago May 18, 2001 In this issue, the community is reminded to turn back the clock on one page, while on another page a rare photo of the fire of 1911, which consumed Mosgrove's general store and the barber shop next door marks past events. On the print the Peririne-Jonas Hardware building, now the home of Waitsburg Hardware and Mercantile, the J.W. Morgan building and others along the west side of the block can be seen. Fire hoses snake across the dirt Main and Preston intersection, which was illuminated by a single street light....
WALLA WALLA - In this November's General Election, the six-year incumbent will go head-to-head with a new contender for the chance to serve as commissioner of the Port of Walla Walla District 2. Incumbent Mike Fredrickson, co-owner of Associated Appraisers of Walla Walla is hoping to hold onto his seat to continue his work at the port. Barlow Corkrum, a real estate investor is giving him a run for his money. Corkrum shined in August's Primary Election, coming away with about 41 percent of the...
CITY LOOKS AT REMOVING BMX TRACK WAITSBURG - During Wednesday night's Waitsburg City Council meeting, the city staff and council will discuss closing the BMX track on Main Street. City Clerk Randy Hinchliffe said the track was built by the Lion's Club in 2001, however, it doesn't receive much use. The city pays to maintain it each year and will evaluate whether to keep it up and running. The council meeting is at 7 p.m. at the Lion's Club Community Building at the Fairground Facility. Thank you to our many friends for the cards, calls, flowers and memorials to Rev. Mosier, choir, Randy, Presbyterian Women for lunch and Rose for all her help. Lillian Judd and Family...
The choice is clear -- Mike Fredrickson is the best and most qualified candidate for Walla Walla port commissioner. Mike is a wellinformed leader who is honest and straightforward. He has a proven track record of leadership with the port and in private business. He takes an active role in promoting new business development and protecting jobs in Walla Walla County. Mike was the only elected official to participate at a town hall meeting regarding the Department of Corrections' plans to eliminate jobs at the penitentiary. He spoke about the...
I can't believe what I'm hearing and reading about turning off water service for "nuisance violations" and water bill outstanding balances. The two issues are unrelated and the business about unpaid bills seems to have appeared as an afterthought to justify the water shut off threats. First of all, denying water is a health and safety violation to the surrounding neighbors. No water means no toilet to flush. Second, when a bill isn't paid and no token money is received for 90 days, the city can place a lien on the property for monies owed....
Leadership changes are badly needed at the Port of Walla Walla to protect the integrity and financial interests of the organization. In every interview and debate in this race, Barlow Corkrum has demonstrated the knowledge and leadership needed to steer the port back on track to government transparency and accountability. It's time to return control and oversight of port business to the citizens of Walla Walla County. Join me in voting for Barlow Corkrum for port commissioner. Darin Christen Walla Walla...
The rich are getting richer. The top 400 earners in this country own about half of America's wealth. The top 20 percent own 84 percent of America's wealth. Meanwhile, the poor are getting poorer. Millions of Americans are out of work with dwindling prospects of being employed again anytime soon. Seventy-five percent of Americans earn less than $42,000, with 40 percent earning less than $20,000. Of industrialized countries, only Singapore and Hong Kong have a more pronounced income gap between the rich and the poor. Corporate profits are up....
In recent years the Port of Walla Walla has done a good job maintaining a balance of the different types of properties to have available for local and outside parties to utilize for creating new and expanding businesses, which creates jobs. Much of this is due to the six years Mike Fredrickson has served as a member of the commission and his current presidency of the board. Much of the maintaining of an inventory of diverse properties is something private investors cannot and do not do. Examples of this are having a site available for Columbia...
As a contender for Dayton General Hospital board commissioner in the recent primary, I was very impressed with the answers given by my fellow challenger Colleen Sproul to the questions posed by the Dayton Chronicle. Your readers might easily have assumed that she, rather than the incumbent, was the one with six years of DGH board experience. Prior to the election I didn't know Ms. Sproul. Since then I have met with her several times and have found her to be very concerned with the direction of DGH, very knowledgeable, caring and forthcoming...
I n this week's edition, we're carrying an update on the prosecution of three suspected marijuana growers who were arrested in or near the Umatilla National Forest during several raids this summer. The case of the first suspect, Santiago Orozco Contreras, has since been turned over to the U.S. Attorney's Office, which is seeking an indictment against the Mexican national that could lead to a prison sentence of up to five years. Columbia County Prosecutor Rea Culwell had also forwarded case information on the two other suspects, Jose Meraz Faria...
