DAYTON - The Dayton Bulldogs Varsity volleyball team forfeited their match against DeSales Thursday night following a school disciplinary action that suspended the entire team. The forfeiture means the Bulldogs automatically lose their match against the Irish, whom they beat earlier in the season. This may affect their rankings in the league and seating in the district playoffs despite their otherwise winning record. The school district's disciplinary action was effective only for the game against DeSales and necessary so the players could...
TUCANNON VALLEY- Another opening weekend of deer-hunting season in the Touchet Valley has come and gone. The numbers indicate that while the sport certainly hasn't decreased in popularity, it isn't growing much either. Many believe the long-term effects of the economic slump are to blame. But for Phyllis Rothauge, co-owner of The Last Resort Camp Store and Blue Mountains KOA Campground on Tucannon Road just inside the Columbia County line, it was still a crazy, busy weekend. "I think the...

Freshly regrouped from the loss of two senior starters and headed by new coaches, the WP Cardinals seemed in good spirits Tuesday night in their regular season game against DeSales. But despite their best efforts, the team lost to the Irish in three games 25-17, 25-18 and 25-19. "They played as a team," said Karen Huwe, a veteran volleyball coach who took over from head coach Jessie Buehler. "We hit well, but DeSales was digging well," Huwe said. "We did not have a good passing night. We need to work on our passing." The team was without...

OAKESDALE - After the intensity of the Bulldogs' Homecoming battle against WP the week before, Dayton came out sluggish against TOR last Friday and lost their away game 37-6. The Bulldogs denied them a two-point conversion and shut down their offense for the remainder of the first quarter. TOR's second touchdown came after Dayton was penalized on a pass interference call, putting the ball on the Bulldogs' 10-yard line and giving the Nighthawks p...

The gravel road to the trailhead was filled with potholes that rocked the car. We knew we were close to our destination. We pulled up to where the old logging road is cut off to motorized traffic by a high mound of dirt and a deep trench. The four of us got out of the car. Niko and I emerged from the back seat. My friend and his oldest son got out of the front. My friend's youngest son, a good friend of Niko, wasn't with us. But he was foremost on our minds. His father made a point of...
Barely a week after it was unveiled, Keith McMaster's statue of the stationmaster near the historic train depot in Dayton was desecrated. An acidic liquid, perhaps Coke or Pepsi, was dumped over it leaving splotches on the statue's head, and the carefully crafted, bronze eyeglasses were twisted and cracked. During the same week, someone went through a lot trouble to release a seed-laden boxcar that thundered through the Touchet Valley and could have cost someone's life. Columbia County Sheriff Walt Hessler and a citizens group in Waitsburg r...
