  • The Perfect Season

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Oct 28, 2010

OAKESDALE - For the first time since 1967, the Cardinals have a perfect 9-0 season thanks to a hard-fought win against an equally tough TOR playing at home. quot;We knew it would be a fist fight, quot; head coach Zach Bartlow told his team after the game. quot;I told you we would win it by 1 (point) if we had to.quot; Kris Cady was the undisputed MVP of the game, blocking a Nighthawks' extra point attempt that turned out the give WP it's winning margin. Throughout the tame, he made up for a bad play, trying to control a live ball for a punt...

  • California Group To Buy American West Bank

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Oct 28, 2010

SPOKANE - In a business development that's good borrowers and the Touchet Valley community but bad for shareholders and mixed for employees, the holding company of American West Bank has announced restructuring plans through Chapter 11 bankruptcy while selling its banking operation to a California-based investment company. The sale has a local historical dimension since it means the end of the road for the investors from Walla Walla, Waitsburg and Dayton who put up the capital in the 1970s to launch the Bank of the West, whose operations in thi...

  • Wine & Country Living

    Judith Henderson, The Times|Oct 28, 2010

This morning the thermometer pushed 34 degrees. Burr! No wonder I felt a chill around my ankles! This is slow-food season, and today I am making a couple of family favorites: Black Bean Chili and Caramelized Acorn Squash Cake. At about 5 p.m., Wine Guy walked in the kitchen with a bottle of Sleight of Hand Winery's 2008 Magician Gewürztraminer, a blend of 85 percent Gewürztraminer and 15 percent Dry Riesling. Wine Guy jumps in to help with dinner, tossing together a wild greens salad with...

Ten Years Ago November 9, 2000 The Flour Mill Bakery, at 120 Main, opened its doors to the public this Sunday. Owners Micheaelle and Scott Huxoll endured months of planning, labor, expense and frustration to make this endeavor a reality. This turn-of-the-century building has been the location of Shuham Harness Shop, Bailey Funeral Home, Ray Funeral Home and DeWitt Funeral Home at different times. Republican Mike Hewitt unseats Sen. Valoria Loveland in the 2000 general election. Twenty-Five Years Ago October 24, 1985 Louis Donnelly, son of...

  • Valley Has “Healthy” Business Sector

    Dian McClurg, The Times|Oct 28, 2010

In this recession, many businesses are focused on their own financial wellness, but a number of enterprises in the Touchet Valley have opted to turn their focus onto the well-being of their employees. In September, Dayton General Hospital in cooperation with Columbia Cares, a coalition of community leaders organized in March 2009 to plan, assess and implement healthy environments for families and youth in the Touchet Valley, received a $9,600 grant from the Washington Health Foundation to...

    Dian McClurg, The Times|Oct 28, 2010

DAYTON - Although they're toeing the line, Merle Jackson and the Dayton city finance committee believe they'll be able to hold for another year without losses. Monday night, city council member Jackson, representing the committee, presented the town's proposed 2011 budget to his fellow council members and a small audience at city hall. The first draft of this definitive document was well received by those present. "I think we are blessed in this city," said Dayton Mayor Craig George. "Times are tough, and they're going to get tougher." Was...

'Cuz I ain't in the saddle both night and day. But with regulations and taxes right up to my ears, I got a hankerin', pard, for yesteryears." Yesteryears and the old life of cowboys, pioneers, ranchers and early settlers hold a fascination Nevada Slim and his singing partner Cimarron Sue can't seem to shake. The Prescott...

    Oct 28, 2010

When Paul Gregut t the musician gets up in front of a crowd, he experiences what winemakers in the state must feel like when they're dealing with Paul Gregutt the wine critic. "Naked and exposed," the Waitsburg columnist and singer-songwriter says with a sympathetic smile. "It's just as scary for me to do that than for any winery to send me a bottle of wine." • Crush Time

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Oct 28, 2010

SPRING VALLEY - Reporting on my first crush season in this corner of the Walla Walla wine region, I was fully prepared to remove my shoes and socks, step into some large vat and start stomping on freshly picked grapes. I wasn't shocked to learn "crushing" isn't done this way these days, at least not at Spring Valley Vineyard or Dumas Station, the two local wineries I visited for a taste of the season. But I was surprised the word "crush" isn't even a very apt way to describe how winemakers...

  • Valley Soccer Round UpWith

    Dian McClurg, The Times|Oct 28, 2010

Soccer playoffs are just around the corner, and both Touchet Valley teams will get a shot at state championships. The undefeated WP Tigers are a record 16-0 and top 1B/2B soccer team in the state. They also met assistant coach Bart Baxter's personal goal to make over 100 goals in their first season. After defeating Moses Lake 5-0 Saturday and Walla Walla Valley Academy 7-2 Monday, the Tigers have scored 109 goals in the season and only allowed 14. "It's been an exceptional year," said head coach Rick Hamilton. "The kids have just responded v...

  • Bulldogs Put Up Fight Against Irish

Chris Ver Valen and Imbert Matthee, The Times|Oct 28, 2010

DAYTON - Friday night's next-to-last regular season football game in Dayton excited the home crowd. Though the Bulldogs lost 24-7, Dayton started strong and managed to hold its own against the higher-ranking DeSales Irish. "The played hard," head coach Dean Bickelhaupt said. "They had a lot of heart." Even with their 1-3 league record, it is conceivable the Bulldogs could go to the playoffs since they share their record with TOR and TCP. TOR plays first-ranked Waitsburg-Prescott on Friday,...

  • Bulldogs Go To Districts

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Oct 28, 2010

KENNEWICK - After forfeiting last week's game against DeSales, the Bulldogs came out playing somewhat rusty against Liberty Christian Tuesday night but still won their match in four: 20-25, 25-16, 25-19 and 25-18. The victory means Dayton places second in the league and will host Liberty Christian at Dayton at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 3. "It took us a while to get our team thing going," head coach Shannon Turner said. "But overall, I thought they pulled it together very well." Dayton forfeited last week's match against the Irish after th...

  • District Champions!

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Oct 28, 2010

ASOTIN - Despite the turnovers, despite the penalties and despite the hometown referees' micro officiating, to put it kindly, the WP Cardinals did what they couldn't do last year: beat the formidable Asotin Panthers on their own turf. WP's 28-8 victory made the Cardinals league champions, which means they will host the first playoff game in Waitsburg on Nov. 3. "It was disappointing to win the championship this way," head coach Jeff BartCardinals said after the game. "This (the penalties) is our Achilles heel. We have to put our foot down...

  • Letters to the Editor

    Oct 28, 2010

To the Editor: Dayton's political forum (Oct. 6) was packed with interested citizens desiring to select the best candidate for Columbia County. Walt Hessler so graciously expressed no grudge or animosity to his opponent. Perhaps it's time to pull up the campaign signs with a 66 to 33 percentage loss in the primary election and join in the pursuit of fighting the recent crime wave in Dayton. I observed when Mr. Lewis began speaking with dignity, respect, experience and maturity that he would add to the court as a constitutional pros...
