WAITSBURG - "It was another great day!" said WP cross country Coach Joanna Lanning, referring to Thursday's District 9 Big Cross League Meet in Pasco. The WP Men's team placed third behind Asotin and Tri- Cities Prep, and ahead of Pomeroy. Freshman Emily Adams (20:28) was fourth among 38 runners in the women's 5000 Meter race, in spite of taking a spill on the course. "Emily was running very strong in second place the last half of the meet," said Lanning. "Then she fell on the back side of...
DAYTON - The Lady Bulldogs may have lost their last two games, but the league's third-placed team is going into the district playoffs confident they can play well together, head coach Shannon Turner said. "We're excited," Turner said after seeing that her team could keep its poise against a dominant opponent in Weston McEwen. "We didn't play timid. We played well. Even though we lost, the girls were pumped about how they played against such a strong program." Dayton lost against the...
WAITSBURG - In spite of the defection of the opposing team's coach to their team, the WP Alumni Team was no match for the Lady Cards at Thursday night's Homecoming game. Youth won out over experience with the younger ladies winning the game in a three-set match. Spirits were high as fans - some unsure of which team to root for - filled the bleachers. The flag was lowered and Mikala Deruwe transfixed the crowd by singing a stirring rendition of the National Anthem. Amidst cheers and app...
WAITSBURG - The Waitsburg-Prescott Cardinals suffered their first home loss in five years Friday, falling short to Asotin on Homecoming night, 34-21. The defeat broke a home winning streak of 25 games. WP's last home loss was also to Asotin, in October 2008. In the game, WP quarterback Owen Lanning completed 12 of 24 passes for 177 yards. Normally those would be stellar QB numbers, but the five interceptions he threw helped seal the deal for the Panthers. "Asotin played a better foot...

The first score of the game came six seconds before halftime, when Dayton linebacker Andrew Mendoza scooped up a Riverside fumble and ran it in from the 35 yard line. The attempted two-point co...

With family and guests arriving for a holiday meal, the preparations can be a chore. To help the process, I first make a list of important things that need to be done and a reality list of things that must get done before guests arrive. Of course, I start upgrading my kitchen gadgets: a good po- tato peeler, twine and sharp kitchen shears. Early in the week I set-up a drink station in one room away from the kitchen. This keeps folks from coming into the busiest part of the house. It's also time to nix "everything from scratch. " Today, your...
On September 16, the Chicago December wheat contract price began a move up from seasonally expected lows. Over the next 26 sessions, 70 cents were added to the price of soft red winter wheat to be delivered in De- cember to Chicago/Toledo locations. Global wheat traders took note of the change in direction for this "most-watched" market, the first significantly measureable upward move since July 2012. The change in behavior awakened hopes for a new major price trip upward, but the road has been muddy and slow for the last week or so. We are...

Together we re- mem- ber the life of an Eastern Washington giant, Tom Foley, who represented our Fifth Congressional District with distinction for thirty years. Even today, wheat farmers and all the citi- zens of our district ben- efÐit from the tremendous work he did to ensure that farmers had a voice in the nation's capital, to protect Fairchild, and improve infrastructure. He rose as high as a person can rise in politics, chosen by his col- leagues to be Speaker of the House, a position he...
This was one column I was just sure I would never live to type. No, I haven't been in mortal peril at any time in the last week, but it sure felt like it. Between the PSAT and the upcoming end of the quarter and Homecoming and Peter Pan rehearsal and generous helpings of homework, I have spent the past fourteen days, inches away from a nervous breakdown. And now it's finally over. The PSAT was easier than I thought it would be, which was either because I managed to study my way to success on it...
