SPOKANE - In a business development that's good borrowers and the Touchet Valley community but bad for shareholders and mixed for employees, the holding company of American West Bank has announced restructuring plans through Chapter 11 bankruptcy while selling its banking operation to a California-based investment company. The sale has a local historical dimension since it means the end of the road for the investors from Walla Walla, Waitsburg and Dayton who put up the capital in the 19...
PASCO - WP cross country runners went to state this week, setting high scores among over a dozen other schools from all over Washington competing at the Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco on Saturday. Sophomore Seth Deal placed fourth in the state in the men's varsity 5,000 meter race, with a time of 16: 46.7. Although runners from Lacey, St. George and Republic took the top three spots, Deal beat his own 2009 record for the same race by more than a minute. As a freshman, Deal finished the race in 18:04. Other WP varsity runners were senior Nick...
DAYTON - With a stunning five-game come-from-behind victory against Liberty Christian Saturday night, the Lady Bulldogs swept into state before a jubilant home town crowd. It's the first time in five years since the Bulldogs have gone to state. Their first game is on Friday morning at the Sundome in Yakima. Last time, Dayton went to state, they placed third. quot;I knew we could do it,quot; team captain and senior Kayla Turner said. quot;I told the team to play calm and composed and we could go to state. We just had to take a deep breath and...
WAITSBURG - Right out of the gate, barely 13 seconds into their first playoff game at home, the Cardinals found the end zone with their first kickoff return touchdown of the season Friday night and never looked back. Running back Kris Cady, who marked an impressive season-total 1,000 yards rushing during the game, received the Reardan kickoff and ran it back for an 85-yard touchdown that ignited the Cardinals offense. The Cardinals scored six touchdowns, while allowing only one and without the extra point to end the game 42-6. Fearing...
DAYTON - With only 510 votes remaining uncounted in Columbia County by Tuesday night, showing a high 80 percent voter turn out, some candidates could declare sure wins while others were hopeful but reserved. In the heated races for county prosecutor and county sheriff, only the bid for sheriff produced definitive results by Election Night. Incumbent Walt Hessler, with 63.57 percent of votes, defeated Mark Franklin by 562 votes, a victory that cannot be denied. Waiting inside the Columbia County...
WALLA WALLA - With 60 percent of the vote counted Tuesday evening, Walla Walla County Sheriff's candidate John Turner was well on his way to victory over Bill White. In other contested county races, Richard Greenwood beat Virginia Romine for County Coroner, while Kris Hedine won as part-time District Court Judge against Bridie...
DAYTON - In one of it's strongest performances of the season, the Bulldogs volleyball team beat Liberty Christian in four games Wednesday night 25-18, 14-25, 25-20 and 25-17. Only in the second game of the match did the girls let up the pace and appear vulnerable. Most of the night, the Bulldogs' defense responded well to the Patriots' spikes and serves with digs and kills of their own. No matter what LC throw at the Bulldogs, the dawns fetched it and returned it over the net, forcing errors or laying it down awkward corners of the court....

This year, the Touchet Valley "theater family" is bringing back Meredith Willson's "The Music Man" for the theater's 10-year anniversary. And this time the show is a tribute to the director of that first production, Steve Edwards. Edwards was planning to direct this...

Driving back from cooking demos in Seattle this weekend, I was happy to see the Blue Mountains dusted in snow. I love this time of year, when local kitchens smell like cinnamon, and everyone dresses in layers of Black Watch flannel, Sherpa and tufted down. My Wine Guy, who's been out of town all week, met me at the door with a bottle of my all-time favorite: Ridge Vineyards, Santa Cruz Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon. Yum! However, I am impressed by one of our local winemakers, Richard Funk, who's produced a fantastic 2007 Cabernet Sau...

Ten Years Ago November 16, 2000 It was déjà vu at the high school when rains came last week between the jobs of tearing off old roofingand building the new roof. An Oregon company is proposing a 250-foot lattice tower on top of Buttercup Hill. Mericom, out of Wilsonville, Ore,. advises the tower provide four platforms for radio transmitting antennas or similar equipment. Community organizations have started getting re...
DAYTON - Often what's good for business is good for the whole town. One of Dayton's newest downtown business projects should turn out to be just that, its organizers say. Good for downtown, great for tourism and much appreciated by residents. A quick peek at the plan reveals one obvious segment of the local population likely to enjoy it. The brand new, 80 by 50 foot playground adjacent to the depot should be a hit with the kids. "There is no playground on the north side of town right now, so...

DAYTON - Ownership of Ski Bluewood may have been in question in the past six months, but this didn't affect preparations by athletes who represent the mountain in northwest ski racing. The Bluewood Alpine Race Team has named a new head coach for the 2010-2011 season. H a l White, a Walla Walla native who returned home to raise his family in 2002, has taken over duties from George Struthers, who rebuilt the ailing program over the last six years. White raced for the University of Puget Sound...
The WP Tigers host St. George out of Spokane on Thursday, Nov. 4, at 2:30 p.m. in Prescott. This soccer match is a loser-out contest for state. The Tigers, a first-year team, have broken several league records this season and remain undefeated at 16-0. The team is second among 1B/2B schools in the state. Prescott's Elizabeth Xaudaro is the highest-ranking female player in the league, having scored three goals during the season. WP dominates in number of goals, assists, and shutouts. And the Tigers have scored more points this season than an...

POMEROY - It may have been hard to imagine earlier in the season, but coach Dean Bickelhaupt and his staff took their Bulldogs to the playoffs Tuesday night after winning both games in the tie breaker for fourth place in the league. "They put it all together tonight," Bickelhaupt said after the series of short games. "We couldn't ask for a better way to end the regular season." Dayton started the evening with a game against TOR and scored a 32-yard field goal early in the first half. Bi...
OAKESDALE - After eking out a tough 14-13 victory over TOR on that team's soggy bottom field in Oakesdale Friday night, the Cardinals face a dangerously fast-running Reardan Indians team at home this weekend. The loser-out regional playoff matchup starts at 7 p.m. on Friday. Though not pretty, the Cardinals' final win late last week gave them a perfect 9-0 season, the first one of its kind since 1967, according to local sports historian and booster Ross Hamann. But if WP thought its mistbound...
DAYTON - It's been raining all morning, it's cold enough to frost the tops of the Blue Mountains in the distance, the playground fields are soggy, but that won't stop these determined fifth and sixth graders. They're part of Dayton's elementary flag-football league, and it's just two weeks to playoffs. They're heading outside. "I can't keep them from playing, even in the rain. They beg me," said sixth grade science teacher and flag football advisor John Lindsey. The five teams face off Mondays,...
