"One question I'm asked often is, 'Do you have any work in here? Are you an artist?'" Loyd had always responded to this question with, "No, unfortunately not. I just work with framing the art." But one day a conversation with an artist helped her define her role in the art community. "She said, 'There are those who create and those who...

    Dian Ver Valen, | The Times|Nov 20, 2014

DAYTON - The Touchet Valley was touched by early snows this past week and temperatures plummeted into the teens over the weekend, but the long-range forecast for our area doesn't look much like the weather we've had since Thursday. In fact, temperatures are predicted to warm into the 40s later this week. Before Wednesday's cold spell settled in, the weather station at the Dayton Middle School registered temperatures in the 60s and very low 70s in the first week of November. "This pattern looks...

  • EMMA PHILBROOK: STUDENT LIFE

    Nov 20, 2014

Waitsburg High School gets its graduation caps, gowns, and stoles (flat silky scarf things) through a company called Herff-Jones. The seniors buy their graduation gear this time of year and receive it sometime in the spring. It costs $41 to rent the gown and purchase the cap and stole (the cap being a potential stomping ground for head lice and the stole, due to the fact that it's imprinted with a school and a date, being highly un-reusable). That's all we're required to purchase. (Technically,...

  • KEN GRAHAM: FROM THE PUBLISHER

    Nov 20, 2014

On Sunday morning I got up, put a couple of logs in the wood stove and then walked across the cold wood floor in my bare feet to the kitchen to fill the kettle and make my morning pot of coffee. When I turned on the tap, the water barely trickled out. And then it stopped. I stood there and stared at it in disbelief for about a minute. I turned the faucet back and forth several times. Nothing. I stared at it some more. I'm not normally someone who wallows in self pity, but at this particular...
