WAITSBURG-Volunteer Jenny Jones at the Waitsburg Resource Center found the doorway crowded Thursday by local first graders lined up with donations. Mrs. Hinchliffe's class held a food drive, asking for Thanksgiving donations of nonperishable foods. In just over seven days, the group was able to gather 130 items, more than they could hold. Luckily the group brought along a wagon to shoulder the weight. The Resource Center now receives about 7,000 pounds of food annually as in-kind donations from...

To: Citizens of Dayton It is that time of the year to present you with the 2019 Budget for the City of Dayton. 2018 went by so fast that I really have to sit and think what we did this past year. Our theme for 2018 was “Building Infrastructure,” and we had a great amount of accomplishments in this area. The biggest project was the street repairs that were completed due to the damage our streets encountered during the freeze of January-February 2017. The city is spending the nearly $1 million that we received from FEMA, the State of Was...

We hear a lot about the importance of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, to the point that someone created a clever acronym – STEM – for verbal emphasis. Lately, STEM has changed to STEAM as art was added to the mix, and to painter Steve Henderson, art is far more than one little letter in an acronym. "The world needs art," the Dayton artist, who sells his original paintings and prints nationally and internationally, says. "It sounds trite, but I believe it deeply. It has alw...
WAITSBURG-As reported recently in The Times, Mrs. Hinchliffe's first grade students are raising salmon with the help of Andrew Bassler from the Tri-State Steelheaders. So far, the salmon eggs have half-hatched and progressed to the alevin stage. Alevin have a yolk sac attached to their bellies which is to be their nutrient source for the following 30 days. They hide among the gravel, avoiding predators, or in this case excited young onlookers. Students worked with Bassler to create booklets...

I was debating on what to put in this week. Last year at this time, I put in a recipe called Turkey Imperial. It is a good way to use up leftover turkey, so if you are looking for it or would like to consider it, let me know. I was going to use it again until I came across a few others. One was called Quinoa and Broccoli, using mushroom soup, sour cream, and Durkee's Dried Onions. Another one I saw was Kielbasa sausage and Brussel sprouts, but that seemed like a short recipe so passed on it....
