  • WP Tigers Are State Champs!

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Nov 24, 2011

SUMNER -- In only its second season as a high school soccer combine, the Waitsburg Prescott Tigers beat the defending state champions Saturday and brought home the coveted trophy. It's the first time WP has won a state title as a combine, the first time a team has won it for Prescott in 35 years and the first time in 109 years since a team has brought a state trophy home for Waitsburg. An eight-man PHS football team won the state title in 1976. A 1902 WHS football team won the then-equivalent...

  • Wine & Country Living

    Judith Henderson, The Times|Nov 24, 2011

This year it's a Cajun blackened Thanksgiving turkey dinner and although I know there are some people who wouldn't eat another green bean casserole, it's my job to give back this piece of American, to guests topped in homemade roasted onion rings. As far as I can remember, once a year my parents loaded us kids into the station wagon and we'd rive into Napa Valley to purchase two cases of wine. Both wines from the original Charles Krug winery; a pink Rose and a case of blonde Chablis. As I recall, these wines were chilled and served to...

  • Waitsburg Council Gets A Look At 2012 Budget

    Jillian Beaudry, The Times|Nov 24, 2011

WAITSBURG - The Waitsburg City Council is mulling over a 2012 budget that would not raise any rates, but would make some small reductions to maintain a status quo budget. "It's on track with a typical budget," said Randy Hinchliffe, the city manager. The budget is proposed at $2,353,609 for 2012. The council did not vote on the budget last Wednesday, but it may approve it at the next meeting on Dec. 14. Last Wednesday, a public hearing was held on property taxes, although no tax increase was proposed. Hinchliffe said raising the tax 1 percent,...

  • Third Times The Charm?

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Nov 24, 2011

WAITSBURG -- The Cardinals find themselves exactly where they were last year -- undefeated (12- 0) and facing the equally undefeated Colfax Bulldogs (11-0) in the semi-final game of the state playoffs. Even emotionally, the WP players are as confident and as ready as they were last year to take on their Eastern Washington rivals, who have knocked them out of the playoffs two years in a row. "We want to win and we think we can," head coach Jeff Bartlow said. "The kids are really hungry. The kids really want it." But some of the factors that go i...

  • WP Bucks The Broncos In Snowy Battle

    Tracy Daniel, The Times|Nov 24, 2011

PASCO -- One heartbeat, one machine, one WP Cardinal Football team corralled the Lind/Ritzville Broncos, 42-7, last Saturday afternoon in Pasco. The Broncos clock-eating offense began the game deep in its own territory. After several short gains with the run and a couple of incomplete passes, the Broncos faced a 4th and 1 situation on the Cardinals 34-yard line. Once again, the Broncos plugged it up the middle and made the first down by inches. Cardinal Chance Leroue sparked the defense by...

Center Sees Big Numbers WAITSBURG - The Waitsburg Resource Center, which opened in the AmericanWest Bank in December 2010, is being used by our neighbors more than ever. The city's food bank had been run out of the basement of the Presbyterian Church for 25 years until the bank offered up its space. The churches in town formed a board and its new visible spot and word of mouth is bringing more neighbors through the doors, said Bethany Moser, the chairwoman of the board. The Leos Club at...

  • David & Goliath

    Nov 24, 2011

A s many readers may remember, we were hopeful, but a bit skeptical, about the prospects for this season's Tigers team. After losing veteran head coach Rick Hamilton and seasoned assistant coach Bart Baxter, who guided the first-year team to a magical winning season, we were wondering how WP would top that performance. We weren't sure how the new head coach, Precott High School teacher Mark Grimm, who had general coaching experience but not in soccer, and his assistant Jay Potts would do with the young team. There were some questions about the...

  • Waitsburg To Consider Rate Hikes

    Jillian Beaudry, The Times|Nov 24, 2011

WAITSBURG - A recent water and sewer rate study shows the City if Waitsburg needs to increase its rates to break even. The Waitsburg City Council last Wednesday heard a presentation from Alan Schroeder, the vice president of the Walla Walla company Anderson Perry & Associates. Schroeder said he was hired by the city to see if the cost of utilities is keeping up with the cost of service. He found both rates needed to be increased so the city stops losing money. For water, Schroeder said the city is currently charging $27.10 a month, with an...

  • Hospital May Go To Voters If Cuts Pass

    Jillian Beaudry, The Times|Nov 24, 2011

DAYTON - The Columbia County Hospital District and members of the community are rallying all resources and writing letters to legislators to stop a proposed $404,000 budget cut to Dayton General Hospital that will be on the table in the upcoming special session. "It's the big news of our community," hospital CEO Charlie Button said. "If we don't act, the potential could be that we could close." Button said the proposed cut would mean the current cost-based reimbursement model for critical access hospitals that helps Dayton's hospital care for...
