  • Tigers Lauded At Awards Banquet

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Dec 1, 2011

VISTA HERMOSA - - WP Tigers' head coach Mark Grimm had a few select words to describe each of the players on his championship team during the annual fall soccer banquet Monday night. Aldair Escalante, the diminutive junior super dribbler, showed his leadership going up against opponents several heads higher for balls coming from the sky, Grimm said. "That's how you give it up for the team." Luis Torres can afford to reign in his emotions on the field a little more, but shouldn't lose that "chip...

  • Cards Send Dogs To The Pound

    Tracy Daniel, The Times|Dec 1, 2011

PASCO -- The WP Cardinals continued their dream season with a 42-13 pounding of the Colfax Bulldogs last Saturday night. The win leaves the boys of fall with a perfect 13-0 record and proved that the depth of their bench is as deep as their fans love for them. The intensity in the stands was as fierce as on the field as the Bulldogs pushed the ball down to the WP 18-yard line on the opening drive. The heat was on as the Bulldogs kept with their running game, but Dalton Estes broke through the Bu... Full story

    Judith Henderson, The Times|Dec 1, 2011

This week is all about making sure the family pets' winter beds are lined correctly for those long winter naps. They make me laugh; sprawled out in front of the fire like a couple of limp furry pencils. I bought a set of cedar-chip stuffed cushions and my kitties love their newly appointed digs. I also replaced the heating element in the outdoor water bowl for the two "terrorists," who live in the neighborhood, who stop for a slurp on their evening run. Even though they scare the pudding out of the cats, what's not to love about two friendly, f... Full story

  • Letter to the Editor

    Dec 1, 2011

Dear Editor, With the recent elections finished, and after reading a few articles posted in local papers about the hospital board's race and the desire from some to see change in the hospital district, I felt compelled to write a letter in support of the hospital, and the positive changes that I have witnessed over the last several years. I have worked at the hospital over the last 15 years, currently as an employee (for the last year and half) but prior as a consultant for 13 years. I have seen many changes, many of which have transpired over...

  • Heart BEAT

About Needs & Good Deeds WAITSBURG - - A Waitsburg resident who prefers to remain anonymous told the Times that she takes full advantage of the prescription drugs drop-off program co-sponsored by Elk Drug, Columbia County Health Systems and the City of Waitsburg. In her late seventies and describing herself as "lowincome," she has limited mobility and even more limited resources to pay for gas to go to Dayton, so she benefits from being able to swing by the Waitsburg Clinic to pick up...

  • It’s History In The Making

When the Cardinals gathered near the uprights for their post-game huddle at Edgar Brown stadium Saturday night, the coaches were as ecstatic as the players and fans after their resounding victory over arch rival Colfax. "It's no longer a dream," assistant coach Troy Larsen told them. "Go ahead and pinch yourself." Larsen's excitement was an invitation to everyone to revel in a new reality: the Cardinals are going to the Tacoma Dome to play in the state Superbowl of their high school sport, known as the Gridiron Classic. Never in the modern...

    Jillian Beaudry, The Times|Dec 1, 2011

WAITSBURG - With the City of Waitsburg's proposed 2012 budget cutting half of Fire Chief Jim Callahan's stipend, Columbia County Fire District 2 will step up to bridge the gap. Ci ty Manage r Randy Hinchliffe presented the council with the proposed 2012 budget on Nov. 16 that eliminated the chief's $250 monthly stipend from the city. For the past two years, the city had paid Callahan $250 a month and the fire district matched that amount, giving him $500 a month for his work. The fire district's boundaries do not include the City of Waitsburg,...
