The FFA has delivered the little evergreens to the Main Street sidewalks. Each year, business owners, public groups, and families purchase the trees to decorate for awards announced at Hometown Christmas. The CCWWFD2 put up the garland and lights on the Main Street Light posts. And the holiday...

DAYTON-Another year and another great start to the holiday season. The Dayton Chamber of Commerce pulled out all the stops for the 2022 Christmas Kickoff weekend. So many ways to celebrate with ugly sweaters on the run, visits from reindeer and Izzy the camel, the Festival of Trees, the Lighted Parade, Santa, and fireworks. There were plenty of shopping opportunities, a grinchy movie with popcorn, mule-drawn hayrides, and loads of local food, wine, spirits, and beer. It always takes a lot of...

Dear Editor, Every year thousands of letters pour into my Inbox. Believe it or not, they trickle in all year long, but for the most part, they come in during the month of December. The letters range all over the map, from a request for a doll or car to miraculous healings. By and large, these letters are dripping with sweetness and wide eyes, literally dreaming of the items requested. Some are written very formally, and others are scratched out on scraps of paper with smeared crayons. I am particularly touched when a letter mentions others and...

A group of energetic runners showed up at Preston Park to participate in some pre-Thanksgiving dinner outdoor activity. The weather was a bit icy for bike riders this year, so participants ran or walked along the route from the park to Huntsville and back. The full roundtrip route was 5.9 miles, with...

At the bottom of a narrow east and west running canyon, on what little flat ground was afforded, stands the remnants of an old homestead. Barns. Outbuildings. Machinery parts peeking out from beneath heaps of blackberry and rose bushes. There is no sign of the old home. Maybe it was never there, but all signs suggest otherwise. Apple, cherry, plum, and apricot trees are scattered about the moist drainage. The fruit that falls is kept clean by the deer and birds. Elderberry hangs heavy with tiny...
Founded in 1987, Argyle jump-started the current trend for Champagne-caliber sparkling wines in Oregon. Nothing is more festive on a holiday table than a bottle of great bubbly. There’s nothing wrong with cheap alternatives such as Prosecco, but if you want true Champagne quality it’s going to cost a bit more, which makes this $30 bottle a relative bargain. The blend is 80% Pinot Noir and 20% Pinot Meunier, and brings a fine bead (tiny bubbles), refreshing acids, a light hint of spice and ple...
