    Jillian Beaudry, The Times|Dec 6, 2012

WAITSBURG - The re- cent Thanksgiving holiday appeared to have been the perfect timing for burglars to target locations on Main Street. Between Nov. 21 and Nov. 25, three burglaries and one attempted burglary were reported to the Walla Walla County Sheriff's Office. All of the burglaries called in were from locations on Main Street, according to information from the sheriff's office. Not only was the school honored as a School of Distinction by the Wash- ington State School Directors' Association last month, but the Prescott School Board was named the top school board of the year for Washington State schools with fewer than 1,000 students. School Board Chair- woman Karen Tonne said this is the first time the Prescott School Board received this high honor. The current members of the board are Tonne, chairwoman, Sara Fletch- er, Ada Gonzalez-Hernan- dez, Eva Madrigal and Erik Young....

The number of athletes out for wrestling in year two of the Waitsburg-Prescott program is up nearly four-fold from last year. The 2012-13 squad is composed of 15 wrestlers- two from Waitsburg, five from Prescott, and eight from Jubilee Leadership Academy - up from the four who par- ticipated last year. • Coach Has High Expectations For Cards

    Dan Groom, The Times|Dec 6, 2012

WAITSBURG - Waitsburg Prescott boys basketball begins a new era in 2012-13. Gone is T.J. Scott and two trips to the Spokane Arena in three years. In his stead, enters new coach Tavis Crittenden who takes over with high hopes for more hardcourt success. And though Crittenden-a native of Long Creek, Ore. and one-time Blue Mountain Community College player-may be new to the program, his cast of returning varsity letter winners is not. It is that player experience which should make the transition...

The Panthers were only able to put up three...

  • Sursleys Make Dayton Sweet

    Morgan Smith, The Times|Dec 6, 2012

DAYTON - The sweet smell of baked goods and thick custard swirl gracefully through the air when the front door opens to Dayton's business of the year, the Country Cup- board. Country Cupboard owners Chuck and Ray- lene Sursley worked in the Seattle area and wanted to find a smaller town to start a business. "We fell in love with Dayton," Chuck Sursley said. So, the couple, familiar with bakery, deli, restau- rant operation and sales, decided to open the Country Cupboard in 2004. The restaurant h...

    Morgan Smith, The Times|Dec 6, 2012

DAYTON - The Dayton Chamber of Commerce's Citizen of the Year, Roland Schirman, is always looking at the bright side of every situ- ation. Schirman said he always tries to be positive and espe- cially tries to make meeting and interacting with people positive. And his mantra has drawn a group of friends so large he and his wife, Betty Schirman, often can't even get all of their Christmas cards out in time to be called Christmas cards. "We have a mailing list with more than 400 names for holiday...

    Morgan Smith, The Times|Dec 6, 2012

DAYTON - Navigating the world of higher educa- tion can be overwhelming and frightening enough on its own. Add to that the challenge of being a first generation college student with no pa- rental knowledge to draw from and the whole experi- ence can become a venture into the dark. Dayton High School Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Under- graduate Programs (GEAR UP) Site Supervisor Spring LaMere knows how difficult preparing for college is. That is why LaMere and Dayton High School...

  • Teenage Musings

    Emma Philbrook, The Times|Dec 6, 2012

He stares at me from a distance, assessing my description of himself. He's tall, I guess, much tall- er than I would have expected, but shorter than me. His nose flares with the tiniest smidge of sass, and a line of brilliant white teeth parade beneath it. There's a black spot square in the center of his forehead. In fact, he's covered with black spots. And he's blue. Very blue. He is a wooden giraffe, hand-carved and hand-painted in Zimbabwe. For the purpose of clarity, I will call him Blue....

  • Farmer Repurposes Retired Fire Engines

    Jillian Beaudry, The Times|Dec 6, 2012

WAITSBURG - A true piece of Waitsburg history, the recently retired 1962 Ford Westland fire engine, will stay in the Waitsburg area. Waitsburg farmer Jerry Baker, age 58, purchased the old engine from the city recently for $500. The en- gine was made surplus and put up for sale by the City of Waitsburg after it purchased a newer 1986 Pierce fire engine for the department. For Baker, who farms wheat, peas and has cattle on his Wilson Hollow property, this is not his first fire engine - it's his...

  • Parent Access To Be Addressed Dec. 12

    Jillian Beaudry, The Times|Dec 6, 2012

WAITSBURG - Because of a lack of information and clarity in parent access laws at the state level, the Waitsburg School Board will wait until its next board meeting Dec. 12 to address the issue again. This school year, the stu- dents and staff members at the high school had come up with six new dance rules aimed to prevent inappropriate dancing at school-sponsored events. The final rule limited parent access at school dances to 10 minutes before and after any coronation that may occur at the dance. This rule was added by the students, ASB...

The fun started on Saturday at Turkey Bingo, hosted by the American Le- gion Auxiliary. On Sunday, Town Hall opened at noon with a variety of vendors. • Judith Henderson’s Wine & Country Living

    Dec 6, 2012

Driving out west on Highway 11 towards Milton- Freewater, just over the Oregon border, on the right hand side of the road sits the log cabin tasting room of Zerba Cellars. This unique winery has obtained a polished wine- maker who makes wine in a versatile and sustainable manner. This is where I begin this week's column, talking about Zebra Cellars 2009 100 percent Estate Late Harvest Semillon wine. When profiling a Semillon white wine, tasting notes are usually met with a toasty palate of just-baked bread. But in the case of the Late Harvest...

  • CROPS

    Gary Hofer, The Times|Dec 6, 2012

People are struggling with decision making in all of the markets as we close in on the end of the year and the end of the Mayan calendar. Outside of those habitual seekers of reasons to "party as if there were no tomorrow," there is little value in all the dire predictions of cataclysm at the winter solstice on Dec. 21. According to a recent web post from a reasonably cred- ible source of information (NASA) in a world awash with nonsense, just as your desk calendar ends on Dec. 31 and world keeps going on, the same goes for the Mayan calendar,...
