  • A Heartwarming Hometown Christmas

    The Times|Dec 10, 2015

I have fond memories of my oldest son and I selling hot dogs and cookie-in-a-jar mixes at Hometown Christmas years ago, while raising funds for him to participate in the Sasayama Sister City exchange program. It's not that I love standing behind a booth selling things – I don't. It was the support and encouragement we received from the community, which helped make his once-in-a-lifetime trip a reality, that still warms my heart. As I strolled through Town Hall during last weekend's c...

"It was a good confidence builder for the team," Hutchens said of the win. "We've got a lot of things we still need to improve, but you can't ask for a better first game than that." The Bulldogs...

After trailing 12-8 at the end of the first quarter, Dayton came back to lead 19-18 at the half. S...

WAITSBURG – Cardinal wrestling coach Lanny Adams, in his fifth year with the program, is pleased with the turnout for this year's team and excited about the possibilities for the season ahead. A new assistant coach, eighth graders competing at the high school level, and the program's first female wrestler should make for an interesting year. Ten boys and one girl have been hitting the mats in preparation for the season ahead. In addition to many returning faces are two eighth grade boys, one g...

WAITSBURG – The Waitsburg Resource Center shelves are filled to the brim following a food drive sponsored by the Waitsburg High School Leos and the Waitsburg Lions clubs. The Leos and Lions collected just under 1,000 lbs. of non-perishable food items which Leos advisor Gabe Kiefel says will be matched pound-for-pound by the Blue Mountain Action Council. Add that to the 300 pounds Preston Hall students recently donated, and the resource center will receive well over a ton of food. Kiefel said t...

  • Ken Graham: FROM THE PUBLISHER

    The Times|Dec 10, 2015

“Hyperlocal” has become a popular term to describe the kind of news that newspapers like The Times present to our readers. Here’s a definition of the word from Wikipeda: Hyperlocal connotes information oriented around a well-defined community with its primary focus directed toward the concerns of the population in that community. The term can be used as a noun in isolation or as a modifier of some other term (e.g. news). The “well-defined community” that The Times serves is actually a group of communities we call the Touchet Valley. We take gre...

  • Congress Gets a Positive Year-End Review

    The Times|Dec 10, 2015

I jab at the majority Republicans in Congress when they don’t do their job, so I should give them credit when they do. A five-year highway bill has been sent to the president. That’s something Republican Congresses since the 1990s (and the Democratic ones in 2007-2010) have found difficult to do. Bloomberg View columnist Barry Ritholtz makes a reasonable argument against the way the bill is funded, but I agree with Kevin Drum of Mother Jones on this one: Muddling through is good enough. Up next is an education bill. Legislators have had rev...

  • Negative stereotypes about aging linked to increased Alzheimer's risk

    The Times|Dec 10, 2015

Old people are absent-minded. Old people are grouchy. Old people can’t learn new things. If you believe these stereotypes, you may be at higher risk for Alzheimer’s, two new studies show. The studies, published in a paper Tuesday in the journal Psychology and Aging, show that people who have negative beliefs about aging are more likely to have brain changes associated with Alzheimer’s disease. Looking at healthy, dementia-free subjects from the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging, the nation’s longest-running scientific study of aging,...
