'Tis the season to be merry! Or so they say. We all know that the holidays tend to be filled with the extra stressors of high expectations and over-booked schedules. Arctic weather conditions (yes, I exaggerate) and icy roads only add to the tension. One way to combat the inevitable holiday anxiety is to take it easy by staying home. With a bit of creativity you can do much of your shopping and entertain yourself without trekking Walla Walla or Tri-Cities. There is plenty of opportunity for fes...
At this time of year I, as many people do, think back to the Christmases of my youth and the dishes that my mother spent days preparing. Mind you, my dear mum couldn't make you an edible scrambled egg or hamburger that you'd want to do anything with other than discretely chop up and slyly pass to the dog under the table when eyes weren't settled on you, but set the herculean task of a grand holiday meal in her sights and she was transformed into a formidable taskmaster, enlisting and commanding any and all within her grasp to ensure that everyt...
Another Hometown Christmas has come and gone. And if the smiles on the faces of those visiting with friends, enjoying the entertainment, sampling cookies and checking out the wares at Town Hall were any indication, it was a success. Last week I spoke with Commercial Club President Joy Smith to prepare a schedule of events for the paper. In the course of that discussion Smith commented that Hometown Christmas was the "easiest project I've ever been in charge of." Smith recently took over org...

MILTON-FREEWATER - The Lady Bulldogs played two pre-league basketball games here over the weekend, coming out on top in both with a strong defense in the first three quarters. Friday night was the first game of the Oregon tournament, and the girls played Mac-Hi. Dayton was up 25 points going into the fourth quarter and took the game by a score of 42-26. "The final s...

On Saturday I stopped for gas with 35 mile an hour winds at 12 degrees; it burned my lips off! I boarded the Rover, applied a wide swipe of Burt's Bee's lip balm and went directly home, put a pot of water on and made a big mug of hot green tea with lemon and honey. While sipping my tea, I wondered if decaffeinated green tea offers the same health benefits as regular green tea. After researching, I found that the decaffeinating process of heating and leaching does remove some of the tea's natural disease- fighting antitoxins. The compounds in...
