The winter holidays are upon us. And while I love visiting family and drinking questionable eggnog, this winter I'm already looking forward to escaping the days of red and green crinkling paper and going directly to champagne toasts at midnight on New Year's Eve. Until modern technology is supplemented with mass production of a Delorean DMC-12 that will allow me to skip to the bubbly (sparkling cider, of course), we all have to tough it through the most wonderful and expensive time of the year. Don't get me wrong, I love winter holidays. I...
Sometimes stereotypes and traditions bear an axiom that is undeniably perfect. Sparkling wines, including champagne, are one of those timeless classics ingrained in popular culture, synonymous with good times and holiday cheer. There are few things more alluring, more beautiful, than a chilled glass of champagne. Bubbles rising in long, slow swirling arcs while icy beads flow down a crystal flute is one of the classic romantic images of all time. There are few better matches to celebrate the joy and warmth of the holidays than the pop of a c... Full story
Hamming it up for Christmas Yes - it is time to drag out the family cookbooks and start preparing for the descending hoards of family and friends. The tree and lights are up, some of the shopping is done but what to do about Christmas dinner? I'm not one for changing up traditions and tend to cringe when someone says "we're doing something different this yearhellip;" imagining a Christmas tuna casserole or red and green dyed lasagna. Not - I'm a traditionalist when it comes to holiday meals and for Christmas I vote ham! Maybe it has been... Full story
In a story about Hometown Christmas on Dec. 6, the Times mischaracterized $1,000 as income from the event for the Commercial Club. In fact, the club is a net sponsor of the event in that amount....
PRESCOTT - The public swimming pool in Prescott got a huge lift from a recent $54,000 grant earmarked by the Sherwood Trust for capital improvements to the facility. The grant, the largest ever received by the Prescott Joint Park and Recreation District, is equal to half the agency's total 2013 budget of $110,400 approved through a city levy initiative earlier this year. "We're delighted," said Patsy Adams Warnock, the district's chair. "It makes us feel our hard work has been seen by others and they real- ize this pool is such an impor- tant...
DAYTON - On the eve of Ski Bluewood's 2012 open- ing, the resort's owners have hired new managers to run the mountain and get it better known in the region. With more snow in the forecast this week and into the weekend, Ski Bluewood looks poised to open at 10 a.m. on Friday, the new managers said this week. WWG Ski, the Tri-Cities- based group that bought Ski Bluewood more than two years ago, has hired Jody and Brandy Ream, a veteran ski industry couple from the Midwest to become the re- sort's...
DAYTON - The Dayton Bulldog boys found themselves lost in a forest of 6-foot 6-inch black-andorange trees Saturday night. Despite a furious third quarter rally, the Bulldogs could not overcome the altitudinal challenge, and succumbed to their longtime rivals from Pomeroy, 45-35. The young Pirates featured only three upperclassmen, but each Pomeroy junior stood taller than any Bulldog. The two 6-and-a- half-footers, Riley Bott and Cody LaMunyan, posted 12 points and three blocked shots apiece.... Full story
WAITSBURG - The Waitsburg-Prescott girls bas- ketball team finished the four games in six days of the first week of the season one-up and three-down. But Mon- day's game at home against the Weston-McEwen Tiger- Scots left the Lady Cards hoping for more than the 46- 41 losing result. The game started slowly with only seven points posted to the scoreboard in the first six minutes of play. The Carinals finally kicked things in gear with two Samantha Fedderson free throws and back-to-back lay-ups...
DAYTON - The Dayton Bulldog girls overcame an early five point deficit in the second quarter to topple a tall but young Pomeroy Pirate basketball team 53-37 Saturday. After garnering an initial 6-2 lead over the first 4:30 of the first quarter, Dayton lost momentum allowing the Pirates to put together a 9-0 run and take a 5-point advantage at 11-6. The Pirates, who boast a front line of 6-foot 1-inch Savannah Ruark, and three other 5-10 post players, stymied the Dayton offense while guard...
WAITSBURG - The Waitsburg-Prescott boys basketball team capped off a busy opening week of contests with a hard-fought 59- 55 win against the Weston- McEwen TigerScots after three straight losses to start the year. Monday's home contest with the TigerScots was a rematch of Friday's night game at Athena, although the difference in style and outcomes of the two games were as stark as night and day. The Cardinals played zone the majority of the night, forcing Weston-McEwen to shoot the outside j...
WALLA WAL- LA - More than once dur- ing her three months at the Walla Walla Regional Fire Academy this fall, Dayton's Heather Truitt's experience was a bit like trying to drink from a fire hydrant. "I thought to myself 'I don't know if I can do this,'" the 22-year-old volunteer fire fighter said. "I didn't realize how much was involved." It was intimidating at first, she said. Not only did she have to "step it up to keep up with the boys" physically, but the "homework" of reading and theory was...

DAYTON - As the winter semester draws to a close for Dayton students, Associ- ated Student Body (ASB) representatives are taking action to help reignite school spirit, Bulldog pride and keep students from getting too overwhelmed with their final days of the semester. ASB President Samantha Harting updated the school board Wednesday evening, discussing upcoming events and changes the ASB will be implementing in the coming weeks. Harting said the ASB will address a decrease in school spirit, which Harting attributes in part to the being "bogged...
Basketball season has begun at WHS. The season itself started last Tuesday, but this Saturday was our first home game, which means it was the first game the pep band got to play at. Being both in the pep band and out of the sports loop, it was the first game that hit my radar. I ran in with my flute a few minutes late, bracing myself for a scolding. Fortunately for me, the boy's junior varsity game was running about fifteen minutes behind schedule, and the band doesn't play until the beg...

WAITSBURG - A standing room crowd packed the aisles of Waitsburg Hardware & Mercantile to listen to cowboy and western music, chat with neighbors and celebrate the Christmas season. The annual potluck and party put on by owners John and Marilyn Stelwagon drew around 200 community members this year between the hours of 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Saturday. It all started five years ago when customers asked the Stelwagons if they were going to have a Christmas party. "What started out with just...
Maple leaves crunch under my feet as I walk to the car. In my mind, I know driving into Walla Walla will be a challenge at Lewis Peak. At this time of year, the peak's nature is to spray frozen rain on the window shield giving each car its own personal white-out, but don't let that stop you, by the time you reach the lower elevation in Dixie, the ice melts and it's "easy peasy" into Walla Walla. I am no different when it comes to holiday food shopping: I hit the sales. This week, I bought what I need to make all my holiday food gifts. Needless... Full story
