  • Finding your dream ride: Robert & Janet Phinney

    Mike Ferrians, The Times|Dec 17, 2020

Twelve miles up and out of the Touchet Valley, I sat down with friends Robert and Janet Phinney to discover we have more in common than I might have thought. I'm a musician; the Phinney's are equestrians. Spend a little time with them, and you'll realize they are philosophers. In life, all things really are connected. Their ranch in the Blues' foothills is populated with evergreens and five quarter horses: Madison, Ruby, Annie, Jasper, and Cholo. Alongside the log cabin Robert designed, a...

  • Leave the beaver, or at least relocate

    Beka Compton, The Times|Dec 17, 2020

WAITSBURG—A little sadness hung over the Touchet River this weekend. Residents who discovered the beaver reported it midweek last week, and on Saturday, it was reported that the beaver was dead from an apparent gunshot wound. The beaver was relatively small, and observers guessed it to be on the younger side. It was suspected to be building a dam o...

  • Hunters, avoid the waterways

    Beka Compton, The Times|Dec 17, 2020

WAITSBURG—Most big game hunting seasons have come to a close. As hunters finish processing their deer and elk, reports of animal carcasses disposed of by hunters in the Touchet River have begun coming in. Hunters who do not have access to fields or ditches to dump their game carcasses may be tempted to leave the remains in rivers or other waterways, with hopes that the carcass will wash away. Wildlife officers would like to remind hunters that there are many options to dispose of the unusable re...

DAYTON—The Wenaha Gallery will feature College Place-based abstract oil painter Frankie Laufer. Laufer moved to California in the late 1970s and returned last year, settling in College Place. He uses two rooms in his house as his studio. Describing himself as a “late bloomer,” he started painting at the age of 40. • Los Angeles

    Vicki Sternfeld-Rossi, The Times|Dec 17, 2020

We are back in Los Angeles for more doctor visits, tests, and procedures, and we are the healthy ones! Los Angeles is supposedly in COVID-19 lockdown. However, we have been in bumper to bumper traffic more than once, which is frustrating since restaurants aren’t open, except for take-out or delivery. We are relegated to eating grocery store food in our room. It’s Friday, and we’ve been here since Monday, so needless to say, eating in the room has gotten old. We have tons of trash every day....

  • Teeny McMunn: My Recipe Box

    Teeny McMunn, The Times|Dec 17, 2020

This is one of many overnight breakfast recipes. I have used this one several times. My thought is to share it this week in case you wanted to use it maybe for Christmas morning and needed to get a few of the ingredients. It would make the holiday morning easier if you had something ready to go into the oven. It could be used for lunch or even dinner. Blueberry muffins, I think, would complement it, though it does have bread in it. Perhaps some fresh fruit. For me, baking is all about sharing. I made a HUGE pan of fudge, so I am putting...

  • The Christmas Gift

    Linda Avery, The Times|Dec 17, 2020

Tom and I met in 1973 at a summer poolside "Hoagie Happening" party in Redmond. At the time, I was a crafter at Pike Place Market in Seattle, making sand candles. Tom's praises boosted my confidence in my craft – however, that did not translate into sales. As Christmas time approached, Tom invited me to his family's Christmas Eve dinner. I wanted to make a good impression on Tom's parents. I remembered my etiquette to bring a hostess gift, wore the new green dress that I bought at Sears, and w...
