As we do each year, we offer up the poems, stories and letters to Santa from students at Waitsburg Elementary School. A hearty thanks goes out to the Waitsburg staff and students for their help in making this issue possible. • Lady Cards Fall to Touchet and Pomeroy

    Dena Wood, | The Times|Dec 18, 2014

WAITSBURG - The Lady Cards basketball team lost two non-conference road games last week, falling to Touchet, 22-68, on Dec. 9 and Pomeroy, 17-63, on Dec. 12. Despite the losses, coach JT Elsey is encouraged by the team's steady improvement in play and teamwork. Elsey said the team played hard in the Touchet game and made headway in working as a team. "What I expect for them to do game to game, is to improve little by little," he said. Leading scorers for the Touchet game were Paige Wood, with...

The win gives the Lady 'Dogs a 4-0 record with four more games to play before the Christmas break. After taking a 17-14 lead at the half, Dayton shut out the Pirates in the third quarter and outscored the opponents 24-8 in the second half. "I thought again our effort was really good," said Dayton coach Clayton Strong. "We had some lapses especially in the second quart...

  • Cards Get Even With Pirates

    Ken Graham, | The Times|Dec 18, 2014

POMEROY - The WP boys basketball team took a hard-earned road win in overtime here Friday, 63-60. The victory gave the 2-1 Cardinals a split in their series with Pirates, after losing at home a week earlier. In Friday's game, WP fell behind the Pirates early, trailing by four after the first quarter. They were up by one at the half. "I don't think either team led by more than six the whole game," WP Coach Tavis Crittenden said. With the score tied at 54 after regulation play, the teams battled...

  • Greens, Handmade Foods Draw Kids

    Dian Ver Valen, | The Times|Dec 18, 2014

DAYTON - How many of us recall fondly the hot lunches of our early school days? Movies and television shows depicting lukewarm mystery meat and grayish slop dashed onto plastic trays might be a touch melodramatic, but the image is grounded in somebody's reality. Right? Well, Dayton School District has hired a new chef who appears to be dispelling those lunchroom myths, and Superintendent Doug Johnson says the numbers prove it. "Just today we served our highest lunch count of the year - 253 stude...

  • I’m Photo-Phobic

    Dec 18, 2014

Dear Editor, I am writing to protest the shooting of candid photographs of local citizenry by the Times staff. A photo of me appeared in this week's issue and it has become an uncomfortable issue, indeed. The local heathen had, at some time past, issued an informal decree that whenever someone's picture appeared in the local paper, that person was required to furnish a dozen maple bars to the Waitsburg Hardware store. Obviously, this was intended as a form of punishment for having had one's picture in the paper. However, I am not responsible...

  • CHRISTMAS SPECIAL

[Editor's note: Following is one of the most famous newspaper editorials ever written. It was written in response to a letter to the editor, and was published in the September 21, 1897 edition of the New York Sun.] We take pleasure in answering thus prominently the communication below, expressing at the same time our great gratification that its faithful author is numbered among the friends of The Sun: Dear Editor- I am 8 years old. Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says, "If you see it in The Sun, it's so." Please...

  • EMMA PHILBROOK: STUDENT LIFE

    Dec 18, 2014

Dear Santa. OK, so it's been a few years since I've written. And, yes, I know about the rising cost of reindeer feed due to the effect of an expanding ethanol market, and the detrimental effect that unnecessary gift weight has on any airborne object operating without the benefit of a major lift coefficient. And, yes, I know I'm a bit too old for this. But this year, there are extenuating circumstances. I really, really need this present. Really. I loved the model I grew up with. If they still...

  • KEN GRAHAM: FROM THE PUBLISHER

    Dec 18, 2014

This week we have the privilege of presenting the writing of nearly 150 young contributors. Students at Waitsburg Elementary School have written Christmas poems or stories, or even letters to Santa Claus, and they've submitted them to us for publication. (And we're not even paying them.) Last year in this space I said that, when you write for a living, it can sometimes feel like digging ditches with your fingertips. That's an example of an analogy, which is something we writers like to use,...

    Ken Graham, | The Times|Dec 18, 2014

WAITSBURG - At least 25 people gathered at the Lions Building in Waitsburg Monday evening to attend a public hearing on a planned new housing development in the city called Whoopemup Meadows. While many came to comment on the proposal, the hearing had to be cancelled because two members of the commission did not show up, and the group did not have a quorum. Commission Chair William Potolichio, was in attendance, along with board members K.C. Kuykendall and Karen Gregutt. However, the two other c...
