DAYTON - To call the opening quarter of the Dayton versus Waitsburg- Prescott boys game 'slug- gish' would be a slap to the slimy faces of gastropods everywhere. The Bulldogs snapped out of their scor- ing slump first then held off the visiting Cardinals late to earn a 34-31 victory in the first meeting of the season between the Touchet Valley rivals. • You’re In Good Hands

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Dec 20, 2012

Since we bought The Times more than three years ago, we've made a lot of changes we believe have improved local readers' access to good and timely information. One of those changes is more indepth and, at times, critical reporting of public agencies such as the hospital district, schools, city governments, county government and so on. One of the most important reasons for this approach is the need for local residents and tax payers to know how their hard-earned contribu- tions to these agencies are be- ing spent and what decisions their...

  • Tragedy Affects Us All

The Burg, Guest Column John Turner|Dec 20, 2012

I , like you, am sickened by yesterday’s events at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. I want everyone to know that the victims, their families and all who are affected by such a horrific event are in the conversations, thoughts and prayers of our Sheriff’s Of- fice and myself. Events such as yesterday bring home the realities of this world and strengthen our resolve as a law enforcement agency to protect and serve our own wonderful community here in Walla Walla County. The rea...

  • Kids Are A Gift

    Dec 20, 2012

We don’t comment very often on national news, but we make an exception for the tragedy in Connecticut because there’s not a soul in our local communities untouched by the senseless death of 20 innocent children and eight adults. Our thoughts and prayers are with the survivors and the members of their community. News of the shooting came on Friday as we began preparing this week’s special Christmas edition with all the elementary school kids’ letters and poems to Santa. It’s the most precious publication we do each year. The news spilled over in...

  • New Waitsburg Dance Rules Remain In Effect

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Dec 20, 2012

WAITSBURG - Attendance at the recent WHS Harvest Ball was down compared to the Homecoming Dance earlier in the school year, according to Waitsburg School District officials. Only 40 kids showed up for the second of three annual school-facilitated dances. Short of a student body survey, it's hard to know why fewer students attended the event, but school officials are concerned some would-be dancers stayed away because of the controversy over dance rules and parent access to the kids' social activities. "I think it's sad our kids are i...

  • Surprise: 76 Dayton Ordinances Missing

    Morgan Smith, The Times|Dec 20, 2012

DAYTON - The Dayton City Council revisited one of about 76 ordinances that should have been part of the city's municipal code but were inadvertently omitted. The ordinance, title five, chapter 12, section 840 of Dayton's Municipal Code, creates an appeal period of 21 days from the date of an administrative decision and/or an interpretation of an administrative code, city Clerk-Treasurer Trina Cole said at the city council meeting Monday night. The ordinance was apparently inadvertently appealed in 2001, Cole said, and was reinstated at the...

    Times Staff|Dec 20, 2012

DAYTON - Two men were arrested, one for burglary and one for theft, in separate incidents in Columbia County Sunday, but there's no indication in court documents that either one is connected to any of the commercial burglaries or car thefts committed in the area recently. The suspect in the first incident, Andrew Gatz, 34, listed as homeless, appears to have been caught up in a domestic dispute with a woman he dated on Rose Gulch Road. He was charged with one count of residential burglary and one count of malicious mischief for breaking do...
