  • Hospital System In Cash Crunch

    Dian McClurg, The Times|Dec 23, 2010

DAYTON - The Columbia County Health System is more than $800,000 behind in its accounts receivable as a result of its recent switch to a voter-approved electronic health records system - a situation that has created a serious cash crunch, hospital directors learned last week. News of a swamped billing staff and unpaid invoices more than 90 days old has prompted directors to authorize CEO Charlie Button to tap into a reserve fund while the district's billing operation is outsourced in part to a Spokane-based company charged with getting caught...

I am a pear lover! That's right. I love a good winter pear, and what constitutes a good pear is simple: ripeness without bruising. I was in Andy's earlier today, and the produce clerk came around the corner with a box of beautiful Washington State Organic Pears unblemished! I was heading back to the barn to create a catering order for a customer who had ordered, "Salad for a Crowd," an item from the Flying Aprons Catering Menu, made of pears and other wintery foods. This salad is simply made. On four salad plates, line each in composed lettuces...

    Dec 23, 2010

Ten Years Ago January 4, 2001 While the Booster Club is asking for the community's contributions of pictures and stories in their process of publishing a book on the last 100 years of football at Waitsburg High School, a Walla Walla man, Earl Roberge, has paired up with the retired former owner of Tidewater Barge Lines, Ray Hickey, to pen a book about dams. While Washington's unemployment rate jumped four-tenths of one percent to a 4.9 percent for the fourth November in a row, a budgeted 6 percent increase on personal and property taxes for...

  • Dayton Considers Security Cameras

    Dian McClurg, The Times|Dec 23, 2010

DAYTON - Though the old story that teachers have eyes in the back of their heads turns out to be untrue, school officials in Dayton hope to keep a watchful "eye" on certain high-risk areas on school grounds with a new security camera system. "I hate security cameras," said Superintendent Doug Johnson. "But I'd rather make a couple thousand dollar investment in cameras than keep spending money on clean up." Vandalism at the Dayton School District has grown more frustrating over the last 18 months to two years, Johnson said. This year the distric...

  • Boys Suffer Narrow Losses

    Dian McClurg, The Times|Dec 23, 2010

ASOTIN - Dayton boys struggled to retain a winning edge in their last two away games against Waitsburg and Asotin over the weekend. Their heartbreaking twopoint 36-34 loss to the Cardinals Friday came with less than a minute before the end of the game. In Asotin on Saturday, the Panthers got a quick jump on the Bulldogs and the Dayton boys just couldn't keep up after that, trailing until the final whistle sealed Asotin's win 67-51. Panther Ben Servatius came out hot in the first quarter, shooting six for nine and scoring 14 points for Asotin....

  • Bulldogs Struggle

    Dian McClurg, The Times|Dec 23, 2010

ASOTIN - Saturday night's game against the Lady Panthers was another loss for the Lady Bulldogs with a final score of 59-46, but it was an improvement over their defeat against WP Friday. Against WP's larger, more experienced team, the Lady Bulldogs fell 68-33. On Asotin's court, the Dayton girls had to push hard to keep up. Nicole Lambert led with 13 points, followed by Jessica Tate with eight. Both Samura Miller and McKayla Bickelhapt scored seven points. Zara Reynolds led Asotin with 14...

  • Cardinals Undefeated, Need “Greater Challenge”

    Rosindee Thompson, The Times|Dec 23, 2010

MILTON-FREEWATER - The lady Cardinals go undefeated after their first four games of the season, adding another win with their 55-21 defeat of the Mac-Hi Pioneers on Tuesday. Even though the girls played well, head coach Jerry Baker said he has a few things in mind that his team will work on before the Holiday Tournament coming up Dec. 28 and 29 in Helix. "We need to work on not allowing turnovers on our part," Baker said. "We need to review our ball-handling skills, man to man, and defensive skills." The girls' games so far have been pretty...

  • Cardinals Pick Up Head Of Steam

    Rosindee Thompson, The Times|Dec 23, 2010

MILTON-FREEWATER - The Cardinals are on a roll, winning their third matchup in a row Tuesday against the Mac-Hi Pioneers in a nonleague game that ended with a score of 59-23. WP only lost their first game of the season in a narrow 47-45 defeat against Weston-McEwen. Though they started off a little behind, the boys quickly caught up to the Pioneers Tuesday night and stayed ahead for the rest of the game. "Overall, it was the best game of the season for the boys," head coach TJ Scott said. The...

  • With Liberty And Theater For All

    Dec 23, 2010

Lois Mettler invited me to go with Russ and Barb Knopp to The Music Man, produced by the Touchet Valley Arts Council Productions Group. Lois bought the tickets. We were seated in the front row of the Liberty Theater in Dayton. Lois apologized for the location of our seats. Yet I discovered that our seats were the ideal place to watch the performance and be amongst the members of the orchestra. Anyone who knows me will realize how exciting this was for me. I sat by Nicolas Pearson on my left, who played the electric keyboard, and Linda Hermanns...

  • Aid Can Be Sustainable

    Karen Matthee, The Times|Dec 23, 2010

Editor's Note: This is thesecond in an ocassional seriesabout the work of ClearPath International. KarenMatthee is the organization'scommunications director. In a country like Afghani stan, where many young adults find it tough to get work and disabled young adults find it tougher still, the best hope for landmine accident survivors is to be trained in a skill that generates income. Better yet is for them to use their new skill to help make Afghanistan's countryside safer for others who face...

  • Stop The Grinch

    Dec 23, 2010

In the recently released movie, "The Next Three Days," actor Russell Crowe plays a school teacher whose wife is falsely accused of murder, serves time in a Pittsburg jail and faces the prospect of many more years locked away from him and their young son. Desperate to free Laura (played by Elizabeth Banks), John (Crowe) resorts to a well-planned scheme for her escape. Without giving away too much about the plot of this edge-of-your-seat, what-would-you-do drama, suffice it to say that John uses a clever method to open a car door that is also...
