  • Analysis: Was It Bullying?

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Dec 29, 2010

In its Nov. 18 suspension letter to the three volleyball coaches and its Dec. 17 ruling upholding the suspension decision, the Waitsburg School District charges that Jessie Buehler, Katie Buehler and Tressa Robbins purposely placed an athlete in a position of being harassed, intimidated and bullied by her teammates. But the statements from team players on which the district's charges were based give a much more complex picture of the controversial team meeting of Nov. 13. It's much less clear...

  • Wine & Country Living

    Judith Henderson, The Times|Dec 29, 2010

While attending a champagne tasting last week in Manhattan, New York, I was blown away by the exceptional differences in tastes and styles of the all-French tasting. After a visit and dinner with associates, I returned to my room with the nagging thought: What about bubbly here in Washington state? As soon as I landed at the airport, I met with Chad Diltz, owner/winemaker at Tru Cellars, the only producer of sparkling wine in Walla Walla. I sampled his Blanc de Blanc Me'thode Champenoise NV, and I was stunned. No wine at the New York tasting co...

Ten Years Ago January 11, 2001 Frank Thomas, Jim Burres and Frank Thomas, members of the local Lewis Clark Bicentennial Committee, presented their banner to the Commercial Club for consideration to raise awareness of the Lewis Clark Bicentennial in 2006. The yellow Goretex banner with gold fringe depicts the design familiar from road signs with "Waitsburg, Washington" below the graphic of the two explorers. The overlying layer of haze over the valley recently broke Tuesday. Tuesday was bright and sunny but temperatures were brisk. Thanks to... Full story

  • Levy Rate Lower Than Reported

    Doug Johnson, Guest Column|Dec 29, 2010

Recently the Dayton School Board took action to place a supplemental maintenance and operations levy on the February ballot. When the board approved this measure, I estimated the cost per thousand to be 65 cents per $1,000 of assessed value. Due to some miscalculations on my part, the cost is actually estimated to be 45 cents per $1,000. The error occurred when I used the wrong tax table for calculations. When the ballot information was passed on to the county, the error was found and corrected by Chris Miller, Columbia County Assessor. The...

  • Still Dangerous After 35 Years

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Dec 29, 2010

When I first visited Vietnam more than a decade ago, it wasn't immediately obviously to me that this Southeast Asian nation was a war-ravaged country. Certainly, there were crater marks in the landscape as we flew into Hue City, and on our way to Dong Ha, Quang Tri Province, I saw a number of roadside bunkers and watchtowers that stood as a quiet testament to the conflict that had ended a quarter century before I first traveled there. But even the mostly rural province of Quang Tri looked like... Full story

  • Is 2011 The Year?

    Dec 29, 2010

It's been a week since the Times moved back into its historic front office on Main Street. The new quarters still look a bit bare. IT specialist Scott Underwood is still straightening out the computer system, and contractor Ron Smith is still putting the finishing touches on the trim. Otherwise, the brand-spanking-new bullpen (an industry term for the newsroom) is up and running, ready for 2011. Meanwhile, the newspaper collating, stuffing and mailing operation has been moved to the very back of the Mock Building so it can use the alley for...

  • “My Whole Life Was In There”

    Rosindee Thompson, The Times|Dec 29, 2010

DAYTON - Longtime Touchet Valley resident Steven Long, 23, returned home after dark on Christmas Eve from a trip to visit family in Walla Walla. As he rounded the corner and peered forward into the valley, his eyes locked on an orange glow in the distance. As he drew closer, he saw the farmhouse that's been in his family for more than 60 years fully engulfed in flames. "I was speechless," Long said. "My whole life was in there." He quickly dialed 911 and waited for aid to arrive. Fire crews... Full story

  • Superintendent Upholds Suspension

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Dec 29, 2010

WAITSBURG - In the latest development involving this fall's controversial volleyball coaches' suspension, the Waitsburg School District superintendent has upheld the high school principal's decision to dismiss the three women for the remainder of the 2010 season. Former head coach Jessie Buehler and her sister, assistant coach Katie Buehler, have appealed the superintendent's ruling, insisting they were suspended without cause and were not given a fair hearing before the suspension decision was made. That means the case of the first coaching... Full story
