WAITSBURG - Where did the holiday music go? The Christmas music that resounded from a speaker on top of Waitsburg City Hall for years was silenced in 2008, said City Manager Randy Hinchliffe. Hinchliffe said the speaker that emitted the holiday tunes is in poor condition and does not do the music justice. The music was controlled by a CD player that would get stuck on one song, resulting in a specific song, like "Frosty the Snowman" being played over and over again for hours. Unfortunately, Hinchliffe said, some community members did not find...

WAITSBURG - Waitsburg resident Clyde Burdine is offering a reward of $200 for prosecution or to fine the person who has been dumping animal carcasses in a drainage ditch near Whoop Em Up Hollow about a half-mile outside of city limits. Burdine has lived need the hollow since 1984 and he said the offender has been dumping carcasses in this area over the past two years. Burdine drives by that area about five or six times a day and has seen two deer carcasses a sturgeon carcass, and most recently, the carcass of a hog, head and all. The land is fa...
DAYTON - Dayton alumna Nicole Lockard and her teammates were a bit worried about playing the younger Bulldogs in the second annual alumni game last Tuesday. After all, the dozen former high school players who hit the court weren't exactly in the best shape. But they decided it was more about coming out and playing, which they did and then some. The alumni, whose graduation dates went clear back to 1986, beat the 2011 team, 31-19, showing they have what it takes to put games away and have a good...
WAITSBURG - The Baby Jesus figure from Waitsburg's Presbyterian Church was found hanged by a tree near the church Monday morning. Pastor Bret Moser of the church said the recent incident is a violent crime and is asking the community to help find the suspects. Moser said a neighbor saw spectators in front of the church on Main and Fifth streets taking photos Monday morning about 8 a.m. and upon realizing the hanged figure, alerted Moser and removed it. Deputy Brian Bush with the Walla Walla...
Chicago wheat price swings have made business uncomfortable for the last 18 months, with swings ranging more than a dollar per bushel in any given 60-day period. Chicago is in the spotlight because it is the most visible, but Kansas City, Minneapolis and even Portland wheat markets are in the same whirlpool. Making decisions about things financial, be it wheat, 401k funds, CD's, stocks or even municipal bonds has become an exercise in frustration and anxiety even for professionals. Even the isolated among us are seeing and feeling the erosion o...
WAITSBURG -- The WP Cardinals were defeated by the Riverside Pirates, 38-58, in a David-and-Goliath style battle at home last Friday night. WP's Billy Brown started things off by out jumping his opponent for the opening tip off but the Pirates height soon became an issue for the Cardinals. WP's Dustin Wooderchak drew a foul on a put back and got the Cards on the board with a free throw, but it would be nearly four minutes before the Cardinals lit the board again with a field goal from Justin...
WAITSBURG -- The WP Lady Cardinals defeated the Riverside Pirates, 56-30, last Friday night. The Cards brought the heat early with a full court press that was too much for the Pirates to handle. The Cardinals capitalized on back to back steals from Ronnie Hulce and Hailey Goenen and Kristin Potter blocked the next Pirate shot to keep the Cardinals defensive momentum going. WP's Krystal Harris threw up yet another three point bucket followed by a bucket from Hulce for a 10-2 Cardinal lead early...
POMEROY - The Tigers' wrestling performance at the team's second meet in Pomeroy in as many weeks Tuesday was an athletic déjà vu. Dalton Larue pinned one of his opponents in the second round of his first match, then was pinned by his next opponent - none other than state champion Tory Knebel, whom Larue held off well into the second round of that match. The other Tiger team members were again defeated fairly quickly, but head coach Lanny Adams was encouraged by the team's improvement over l...
DAYTON - At one point during the men's alumni game, two Bickelhaupts were ganging up on a third. That kind of family ribbing is possible when two teams draws from two generations of Bickelhaupt basketball players. Tuesday's night second annual men's Bulldogs alumni game reached even farther back in time than the women's alumni game with Dean Bickelhaupt (1977) playing beside his older son Garett (2009) against the younger, current Bulldog Colton (2012). The two older Bickelhaupts found...
1 WP State Football Champs The WP Cardinals claimed the 2B 11-man state football title with a 33-7 victory over the Morton/White Pass Timberwolves earlier this month in the Tacoma Dome. The undefeated Cardinals became the second WP team to win a state title this fall after the Tigers won it for soccer. 2 WP State Soccer Champs In only its second season as a high school soccer combine, the Waitsburg Prescott Tigers beat the defending state champions in late November and brought home the coveted t...

Ten Years Ago January 3, 2002 The new Walla Walla County Public Safety Building improves efficiency for the Walla Walla County Sheriff's Department and Prosecuting Attorney. Sheriff Mike Humphreys demonstrated some of the improvements to The Times publisher. Twelve-year-old Kolby Weston, son of Tim and ZoAnn Pettichord, kept his wits about him and remembered what his mother had told him in case of a dog attack, curl up in a ball and protect your head. As Weston returned home he was attacked on Main Street by a vicious Rottweiler. Weston...

SKI BLUEWOOD -- I resisted it last year, miraculously. But my 14-year-old son was relentless at the outset of this year's ski season. I had to try it. I promised (in a moment of weakness) that I would give it a go. So, last week on a quiet day just before Christmas, I finally did it.I walked into the lodge at Ski Bluewood and signed up for a lesson in snowboarding . Of course my reluctance to "boost" on a "stick" was somewhat generational. When I first stood on skis at the age of 9, the Beatles...
On Dec. 2, Charlie Button, the CEO of Dayton General Hospital, gave this testimony in Olympia regarding House Bill 2130 that would change Medicaid reimbursement for all critical access hospitals and reduce Dayton's hospital budget by $404,000. No decision has yet been made by the legislature. On behalf of the Board of Commissioners of Dayton General Hospital and the residents of Dayton and Waitsburg, Washington, I urge you defeat House Bill 2130. Our state benefits from the strong network of rural and urban hospitals working together to ensure...
A Gift For Future Nurses A s we've all finished unwrapping our sweaters, scooters and snowboards after the recent holidays, another kind of gift must be noted. The Baker Family, Anita and Tom, give $500 to $800 to nursing students at Walla Walla Community College. This is one of the best gifts because an education and a career never gets replaced by a newer model or goes out of style. At last month's PEO Career Tea at Waitsburg High School, Anita Baker pitched this scholarship to the students...
After dispelling alarmist notions foretelling the end of the world in 2012 last week, we'd like to take the opportunity this week to look at what will happen next year or what we would like to happen. Some of the items that follow are predictions based on announcements made in 2011, while others are more in the realm of our wishful thinking. Overall, we feel 2012 will be a good year for the Touchet Valley. We expect Waitsburg and Dayton to get even more attention as travel destinations, hopefully sustaining the existing and new downtown...
