I t's a great pleasure to announce the promotion of our Manag- ing Editor Jillian Beaudry to the position of editor. The change is effective immediately. As editor, Jillian will take foremost responsibility for the content of the newspaper, the development of our news coverage, long-range content planning and so on. As a publisher with a long career in journalism, I will assist Jillian in this position but more as "an actor in a supporting role." Jillian will be the "actress in a leading role" to use a Hollywood metaphor, while I continue to...
I really appreciate the time, effort and caring that Troy with Touchet Valley Repair put into helping us last week when we broke down in Waitsburg. One never knows who can be trusted in those situations and I really appreciated the amount of time he spent trouble shooting our problem. He was obvi- ously not trying to make a buck! He could have really stuck it to us, but he was so fair and profes- sional. Thank you so very much.. Terri Stillwaugh Caldwell, Idaho...
Editor's Note: This letter to the editor is from Jim Davison, who was featured in the Heartbeat Column in the Aug. 23 edition for his volunteer work on the press box at the Waitsburg High School football field. It is apparent that more questions should have been asked when The Times called requesting to take my picture. Regard- less, thanks to you and the others who had kind words to say on my behalf in the article which accompanied the requested picture. The real story is, in this case, I just happened to be the person chosen to represent all...

Passmore serves all of Columbia County as an advocate from the YWCA for men and women who are in danger from domestic violence or sexual assault. The Dayton extension of...
Fall sports are here! Not everyone in the valley has an athlete on a school sports team, but there's little question many families in Prescott, Waitsburg and Dayton are excited about the coming sports season. And with good reason. Even those who do not have a horse in this race, so to speak, are psyched about the win- ning spirit they hope will carry over from a year ago when the Cardinals launched their best football season ever, the Tigers started their ascent to the state crown as well, the Bulldogs foot- ball team began their best season...

Davison: Waitsburg's 'Silent Volunteer' Retired School Teacher Jim Davison Steps Up To Lend A Hand Without Needing To Be Asked WAITSBURG - When community members in Waitsburg need help with a project, they typically know who to call. However, some volunteers in town simply show up offering to help. Jim Davison is one of those helpers. "He's a really great, si- lent volunteer," said Denise Winnett, who worked with Davison at Waitsburg High School. Winnett, who lives within viewing distance of...
I t seems that every summer, some unfortunate local car owners return to their vehicles, day or night, to find that the vehicles have been broken into and are missing some of their personal possessions. As Dayton reporter Morgan Smith's story in this week's edi- tion reveals, car owners in Columbia County are no exception. But statistically, there may be some good news: car prowls are down in the Dayton area and many parts of the country, according to law enforcement authorities. We'll get to that further down. For now, it's worth repeating...

In the Aug. 9 edition of the Times, the editorial on page 2 titled "Press Box, Ahoy!" included an incorrect donation amount. The Waitsburg High School Class of 1972 provided $100 for the press box project. In the Aug 9 story titled "Talbott, Bensel Advance," Mike Talbott's history run- ning for county commissioner was incorrect. Talbott has never run for the com- missioner position before but did apply when a commissioner retired and was not appointed. The Aug. 9 story titled " Mother- Daughter Duo Equate Art With Love," mist- stated where the...
The Touchet valley Women's Golf Association has concluded two busy months. Rain and in- clement weather kept most of the ladies off the course in April and May. Cool weather continued into June. The group sponsored a very successful Junior Golf program in late June. Evelyn Himmelberger and Patty Eng co- chaired this event. Over 50 youth from the area enjoyed a week of free lessons under the guidance of Max Reinland, Walla Walla Memorial Golf Corse pro. The last day was highlighted by hot dogs, chips and ice cream served up by the golf club...
I had the opportunity last Friday to stop in Waitsburg on my way to Lewiston, Idaho. I felt compelled to write and tell all of you what a nice town you have. The old homes and buildings that have been maintained throughout the years show such pride of ownership as well as a strong sense of a caring community. You know how you can get a feel for a town just driving through it? I was immedi- ately drawn to your city, and in fact parked my car just so I could walk around down- town and enjoy the friendly people and wonderful busi- nesses. You as...
DAYTON - In tough economic times, charitable organizations become essen- tial in every community. And when the donations are slow coming in, Project Timothy volunteers say you've got to have faith. There are different vol- unteers every day Project Timothy is open, but the or- ganization still practices the same thing -- helping people in need. Project Timothy offers food, clothing, emergency shelter, rent payment as- sistance, utilities assistance, medical/prescription assis- tance,...
t's been all over the news in the past few days. From the Walla Walla Union-Bulletin and the Yakima Herald Tribune to the Seat- tle Times and the San Francisco Chronicle, the story has received a lot of attention. The Walla Walla County Prosecutor Jim Nagle decided on Mon- day not to file criminal charges against John Saul, the owner of the New York Store in Walla Walla who reportedly shot and killed a rob- ber at his business. In his decision, Nagle underscored an important legal principle: defense of self and property, a right set out in...

Lately I have taken a real interest in reading the blogs regarding the county commission- er's race. It seems that two issues keep repeating themselves. The first is the fact that at age 18, Chris changed her first name from Billie Jo to Chris. Her first name has been Chris longer than she was Billie Jo and that is how her friends and colleagues know her. It's not an issue. The second issue that appears to be of concern is the alleged conflict of interest with her husband employed by the sheriff's office (a career he has had for nearly 32...

Another huge thank you to my super volunteers for the summer: Selena Bundy, Jaidyn and Zac Brown, Mor- gan Breland, Devon Watts, Tucker Alleman and Walt and Tim Warehime for the little free libraries. You all helped to make the summer...
