  • Frances Chvatal is the best candidate

    The Times|Sep 24, 2020

The 16th Legislative District is changing. While the 16th LD is composed of Columbia and Walla Walla counties, most of southern Benton County, and Pasco, it is no longer predominately an agricultural region. Our region has a rich diversity in its peoples and industry. Even within the agricultural sectors we see a multitude of different agribusiness variations with sometimes competing legislative policy needs. These policy areas are as wide ranging as water use, pesticide application, to immigration and if I dare say —public health! Throw in t...

  • Letter to the editor,

    The Times|Sep 24, 2020

Letter to the editor, The Mayor and City Council Public Safety Standing Committee (“Committee”) contests claims made by Commissioner Ryan Rundell in the September 10, 2020 edition of The Times. As provided in the June 22, 2020 Press Release, the County did send notice in May 2019 requesting negotiations on the interlocal agreements. Though, at the time, the City and County had actually been in formal negotiations since mid-2017; and, the City had requested level of services (“LOS”) and budget information dating as far back as 2016. Our inquiri...

  • Letter to the editor

    The Times|Sep 10, 2020

Voting by mail should replace voting at the polls in its entirety. The two institutions that can definitely be trusted is the County Board of Elections and the United States Postal Service. The money saved by eliminating the need for poll workers could be used to offer free postage on the envelopes used to vote by mail. The person voting would also have more time to consider what they are voting for and would not be confined to the hours of the polling place. It would also prevent unwanted entry to schools and churches from anyone trying to...

Letter to the Editor I am writing in support of Mike Mitchell for Superior Court Judge, Position 1. It is imperative for our community to elect a judge with depth and breadth of quality legal experience. Mike has been on both sides of almost every fence the court straddles. He understands each side’s arguments and positions having made them as an attorney during the last 42 years. This includes criminal law (both prosecutorial and defense), civil litigation, family law, estate planning and probate, business formation, juvenile law and d...

He continues his family’s distinguished legal and civic legacy. Mike’s great uncle Roy Raley was one of the founders of the...

  • Letter to the Editor

    The Times|Aug 20, 2020

Editor, Before anyone takes the 8/13 Times’ reading suggestion of Robin DiAngelo’s White Fragility, they might consider reading John McWhorter’s review of the book in The Atlantic, titled The Dehumanizing Condescension of White Fragility. It’s a great companion piece. Seth Murdock Dayton Editor’s note: The article mentioned can be found at the following link: https://tinyurl.com/y8hrumeq...

  • Inaction to census is not an option

    Aug 20, 2020

The 2020 Census deadline is September 30, 2020, so you still have time to shape the next ten years of your community. The power to change Waitsburg, Walla Walla County, and SE Washington is in our hands. We can all help inform funding for each of the next ten years for public services like healthcare; law enforcement; employment and training; agriculture; food programs like school meals and SNAP; childcare; special education; transportation; roads; emergency assistance; and community development. Emergency flood assistance and most of the...

  • Waitsburg has science

    The Times|Aug 20, 2020

After reading the article in last week’s Times about science at Waitsburg Elementary, a number of people asked me, “Doesn’t Waitsburg teach science in the elementary school?” The short answer, yes. But I thought a little history might be in order. Over the last 40 years, that curriculum has changed, and to the good: good for the teachers, good for the students and good for science, even Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). What was once thought to be best practice from a textbook, science became what was considered hands-o...

  • Mitchell has the experience

    The Times|Jul 30, 2020

I have known Mike Mitchell for 26 years. He’s been my legal opponent or the mediator or temporary judge in several court cases, and I’ve watched his law practice grow and thrive. Whether or not his clients had money, Mike was always an enthusiastic and wise and ethical advocate. That kind of balance and perspective will make him a wonderful full-time judge. When I was still doing litigation, it was always reassuring to walk into a courtroom and know that the judge used to do the very same work I was trying to do. Judges like that know the law...

  • Charles Amerein endorses Bill Jenkins

    The Times|Jul 30, 2020

To the Editor, I am writing this letter of endorsement for Representative Bill Jenkin’s run for State Senator in the 16th District. As a Representative in the WA legislature, Bill has been one of the most successful legislatures at getting legislation passed. I learned this fact as I was being educated on the legislative process, which showed me what a difficult and convoluted process it can be. That Bill was able to move legislation through the process was in itself impressive, but that he did it while in the minority party made it even m...

    The Times|Jul 30, 2020

I am writing in support of Perry Dozier to be our next State Senator for the 16th Legislative District. This is my first ever letter to the editor. I served as the Clerk of the Board to the Board of Walla Walla County Commissioners for over 25 years. County Commissioners must be responsible, caring, knowledgeable, willing to listen and learn and make informed, sometimes hard, decisions on behalf of the citizens of the county. Perry was an excellent County Commissioner. He came into the position with considerable experience in dealing...

  • Dusty Britches Farmer loves Brianna's gardening article

    The Times|Jul 30, 2020

Dear Editor: I just wanted to say I absolutely loved Bri’s gardening article. So absolutely true. Gardening is a labor of love full of relaxation, peace and reward if attended and educated upon. I have learned so much the last two years and have so much more to learn, having fun and excited gardening friends with helpful suggestions and advice surely makes the difference. Love the idea of this rump tractor. It’s brilliant! Some of us aren’t so comfortable crawling around on the ground to be certain. I shall keep my eye out for one. Thank...

  • Writer feels Dozier is the best candidate

    Jul 30, 2020

Dear Editor: It has been my pleasure of knowing Perry Dozier, his wife, and their families for 55 plus years. While Perry was in high school, he excelled in academics, athletics, and Associated Student Body offices. After graduating from Prescott High School, he attended Whitman College and graduated with a degree in economics. Perry eventually returned to operate the family wheat farm. He was a very active member in the Northwest Grain Growers, and he was President of the Washington Association of Wheat Growers. He also served as a Walla Walla...

  • Writer appreciates City Council's Flood Mitigation plan

    The Times|Jul 23, 2020

Dear Editor: One of the frustrations I have as a result of reaching out to flood survivors of the February 2020 flood is the need for a plan for flood mitigation. What I heard at last night’s Waitsburg City Council Meeting was a well thought out plan for mitigation. The utility tax will be a community effort to protect our neighbors and businesses in the flood zone. Waitsburg, once again, outstrips neighboring communities with forward thinking and action. In addition, it is much easier to get information in Waitsburg. Thank you to our c...

    The Times|Jul 23, 2020

During this time in our community, an election has never been more important and that is why Perry Dozier has my vote for State Senate, District 16. I have known Perry for years. He is a life-long resident of our area and is a small business owner. Translation: He knows what our businesses are going through right now and how to best serve them and their employees. During my 13 years as Executive Director of the Moms’ Network of Walla Walla, Perry was a consistent supporter concerned about our local families and the ability they had to access l...
