Station Eleven Book by Emily St. JohnMandel Series Produced by HBO "Because survival is insufficient," a message from Star Trek that is spray-painted on the lead wagon of a post-apocalyptic traveling Shakespeare troupe. Station Eleven is not about pandemics. It is about family, community, art, and loss. It is not the typical post-apocalyptic story; there are no zombies or mutants to fight. Just regular people who survived a deadly swine-flu pandemic that wiped out 99% of the world's population....
The Wrestler's Daughter by Markeeta Little Wolf The locally anticipated and internationally renowned memoir by Markeeta Little Wolf is now available on Amazon. Years ago, decades ago, I found a postcard of a wrestler with clenched fists and a beautiful headdress. The attitude of confidence, with eyes full of humor, made him the perfect talisman for my studio. The card has lived on my easel ever since. After moving to Waitsburg, I met Markeeta Little Wolf, who has confidence and humor, a...
Ten Years Ago January 12, 2012 As clear as day, Craig Funabashi remembers the first time he saw his grandmother’s Story & Clark Victorian pump organ. He was six and visiting the Seattle area with his parents from Long Beach. As they would for many years to come, he and his family traveled up to Whidbey Island for his grandmother’s Sep. 5 birthday and family reunion. They would meet at the cabin where Vangee Johnston kept the ornate wooden instrument and played many old-time Ragtime fav...
At about this time every winter, I find myself missing the sun-kissed flavor of tomatoes from our late-summer garden. The flurries of snow and cold have given me a serious case of wanderlust, and I've found myself daydreaming of exploring cliffside villages along the Southern Italian coast. To satisfy these sudden (and oddly specific) cravings I turned to an old favorite recipe for comforting eggplant parmesan, a.k.a. melanzane alla parmigiana. The lightly fried eggplant, punctuated with robust...
Children and adults of Waitsburg can enjoy the magic of shadow play, a type of theatrical entertainment performed with flat handmade puppets, thanks to the Carnegie Picture Lab of Walla Walla. Shadow puppet kits have been provided to the Weller Library at no cost and residents can pick them up during regular library hours. There is a limited number of kits and families are encouraged to come by. Shadow play originated in central and southeast Asia thousands of years ago and has been a...

I knelt on the edge of the precipice with my knee dug into a sandy spot beneath a massive aromatic sagebrush while Finn ravenously lapped water from a small, green collapsible bowl. Behind and below us, the Columbia River wound lazily between lush, orderly, emerald orchards, jagged rock faces, and scree slopes. My friend Chas stood slightly downhill to my left, packing away a massive wild chukar that he had come to harvest with a combination of Finn's good work and a peck on the cheek from Lady...
This past week of rough weather has been an important lesson and slapped down my hubris. I recently discovered, or instead, learned the hard way, that over confidence was a huge mistake. It seems we’ve had a year’s worth of weather in the last week, with snow, a little warming sun, below zero temperatures, howling winds, followed by more snow falling right now. I was confident my new snow tires made my car impervious to snow; evidently, I was wrong because it is currently a snow-bound scu...

My mother's family has roots in Texas, which often influences our holiday gatherings. In Texas, as with much of the South, eating black-eyed peas on New Year's Day is thought to bring good luck and fortune in the coming year. We often serve them simmered with bacon, along with a big hunk of my aunt's famous cornbread. This year, I wanted to try a twist on this family tradition, one that included a nod to my Latino heritage. The result was flavorful spiced black-eyed peas stuffed into flakey...
Ten Years Ago January 5, 2012 Joanna Lanning is getting ready to take the plunge. Last year, Lanning, and two Waitsburgers, Patty Hazelwood and Vicki Hamann, took a dip in the Columbia River to raise money for Special Olympics of Washington. Lanning is the WP cross country coach, Hazelwood is a special education teacher and cheerleading coach, Hamann is a paraprofessional at the high school. Lanning raised $800 last year. This year her goal is $1,000. Twenty-Five Years Ago January 9, 1997 For a...
Snow put a whole different look on this favorite scene on Lower Hogeye Road, shared in this space several weeks ago. We may dislike driving in and shoveling the stuff, but it certainly dresses up a landscape....

The garden got the better of me this year. I always start out optimistic and start way too many seeds and then pack them into every square inch of the garden. In blissful denial about how many weeds could creep in after the first good rain, I slack on putting down any mulch or weed barrier fabric, thinking I'll have time to get it down in time. Spoiler: I never do. This year the tomatoes grew into a veritable jungle. I pruned them back a bit, but eventually, they got out of hand as well. Soon...
As I’ve frequently written, I am not a reflective person. However, I do appreciate traditions. Therefore, as I did columns for my first and second anniversaries in Waitsburg, I decided to make it tradition and do a third-anniversary column. First, I am still amazed that my original attempt at a column was published; that the column continues is still beyond me. Full disclosure, after reading my initial essay, my first English class professor immediately sent me to the remedial class. Q...
Since Teeny McMunn's retirement earlier this year, Luke Chavez has been sharing his recipes with readers each week. The Times enjoys hearing recipe feedback, and learning about ways that each reader customizes the dishes. Enjoy this review of a dish featured in the June 24, 2021 edition. I saved your recipe from the Waitsburg Times of June 24, 2021, for the above referenced item. I finally made it last night for dinner and invited two good friends over to share the experience. Luke, it was one o...

Of all the holiday parties, one of my favorites to host has always been New Year's Eve. Combining the effervescent excitement of counting down to midnight with my love for fancy finger foods and sparkling wine makes for memorable entertaining. To counter those extra pours of tiny bubbles, it is important to offer your guests a varied selection of satisfying nibbles that are easy to eat with one hand while mingling. Cured meats, cheese boards, olives, shrimp cocktail, oysters, and gougères,...
Ten Years Ago December 29, 2011 A group of Waitsburg residents wants to resurrect the town’s defunct flood control district, a prospect city officials say they welcome. “We want to keep Waitsburg safe and beautiful,” said Allison Bond, who spearheaded a recruiting effort that has yielded the required number of volunteers to serve on the district next year. “There are a lot of people willing to put the time in,” she said. “And they have great ideas.” Citing concerns about the stability of...
Waitsburg residents and supporters came together to put on a holiday parade Saturday night. With less than a month to plan, build floats, advertise, or warm up our singing voices, the heARTfelt parade brightened up the holiday. Many thanks to those who made this little Christmas miracle happen!...
It's day two of Winter Break here in the Compton household, and it feels like week six of cabin fever for my daughter, Gracie. To combat the boredom, Gracie and I have been busy whipping up treats and cookies for the birds and squirrels of Waitsburg. Each winter, our yard is swarmed by plump little Dark-eyed Juncos. We have a couple of fruit trees in our yard that the birds love. This winter, we decided to give them a little something extra, just in time for the snow. I discovered fat bombs for...
My life seems weird now that we have decided to slow down the operations at the restaurant. Our new focus on catering, take & bake, and working with some winemakers for special dinners is more fun and for sure, less stressful. Now I have time to go to the gym, but am I? Not as much as I should! The excuse is I’m still decompressing, although I’m not sure how long that will be a viable excuse. I’m finally reading again and recently finished two books and am on to a third. I’ve perfected downloa...
Razorblade Tears by S.A. Cosby Perfect for fans of John Wick, Razorblade Tears is a fast-paced, can't-put-it-down tale of revenge. After their sons are gunned down in broad daylight, two ex-convicts must put aside their vast differences and work together to bring justice. This book reads like a big-budget action thriller, and if it doesn't become a movie, I for one will be very disappointed. Bride's Story by Kaoru Mori A manga, or Japanese comic, Bride's Story is a lushly beautiful tale set in...
