  • Can you Hear me Now? Are you Listening?

    Vicki Sternfeld-Rossi, The Times|May 30, 2024

No, this is not the start of a cell phone commercial, but recently, my tennis partner shouted, “It’s out,” as the ball flew over his head (meaning it will be out of bounds). I heard him but didn’t listen because it looked to me like the ball was in, and it was. Unfortunately, I still missed making the point, but it brought back memories of hearing versus listening. When I was about eight or nine years old, my mother took me to our pediatrician because she was concerned that I had a hearing...

  • Strawberry Shortcake with Mint Whipped Cream

    Luke Chavez, The Times|May 30, 2024

One of the things I most look forward to in late spring is the first bite of a plump sun ripened strawberry. This week, I noticed the first few bright red fruits ready for picking in our backyard patch. For the next couple of weeks, we will be plucking them by the bowlful. When fruit, such as strawberries, are perfectly ripe, and in-season, the general rule is the simpler the preparation the better. Which is perhaps why the combination of ripe strawberries with shortcake biscuits and whipped cre...

  • The Mother's Day Miracle

    Vicki Sternfeld-Rossi, The Times|May 23, 2024

I miss my mother. I especially miss her wicked sense of humor, her snarky remarks, and even her unsolicited wisdom, which was usually right and on point. As I matured, I learned that my mother was usually right, even if I didn’t always admit it to myself or to her. Since my mother has passed away and I don’t have any children, Mother’s Day has become “just another day” to me, except as it applies to Waitsburg gardening. I previously wrote that I didn’t understand a seemingly arbitrary g...

The band had been using uniforms from the 1990s, and the new brightly colored,...

  • The Art of Restraint

    Vicki Sternfeld-Rossi, The Times|May 16, 2024

Restraint has several meanings, but commonly, it is defined as the act of holding something back. Never one to restrain my competitiveness or need to accomplish things, I am beginning to learn that sometimes restraint may be worth consideration. When I don’t, there has been a good chance of regrets and injury. For example, when I don’t restrain my appetite, I usually feel worse for wear afterwords. If I don’t restrain my need to win the point on the tennis court, I break bones. I need to work...

From Mexican Caldo de Pollo to Thai Tom Kha Gai, the diversity of ingredients and flavors that are combined to accentuate chicken in broth are seemingly limitless. Here, the soup takes inspiration from Greece, with a bright burst of lemon, rosemary, and dill. Rounded out with spinach and potatoes, this soup is as nourishing as it is flavorful. • Involuntary Commitment Red

    Paul Gregutt, The Times|May 9, 2024

Last week, I spent a day walking the vineyards in the Rattlesnake Hills, researching an in-depth feature for my Substack pages. Among the highlights was a tasting with Will Camarda, who has taken over the reins at his family's Andrew Will winery. We sat outside at the Two Blondes vineyard, the source of many of the winery's most expensive bottles. So I was amazed and delighted when Will pulled out this bottle, a blend sourced from top Columbia Valley vineyards, including Two Blondes, yet priced...

  • Peanut Sauce Tofu

    Luke Chavez, The Times|May 9, 2024

For as long as I can remember, peanut butter has been one of my favorite foods. As a kid, I loved the many sandwich options, such as the classics peanut butter and jelly, or peanut butter and banana. I love it in cookies or drizzled with honey in a yogurt bowl. Beyond sweets, peanut butter can be a wonderful and versatile ingredient in savory dishes. From West African peanut soups and stews to Thai satay sauce. Here a vibrant peanut sauce with lime and ginger is used as a glaze for baked tofu....

  • King Estate 2019 The Soldier Cabernet Sauvignon

    Paul Gregutt, The Times|May 2, 2024

Try to find a really well-made Washington Cabernet that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. Not easy, especially one that includes fruit from top vineyards in Walla Walla and on Red Mountain. I've found one, and surprisingly, it's from an Oregon winery best known for Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir. Almost half of the grapes in the blend are from Walla Walla's Seven Hills and Red Mountain's Quintessence vineyard. It's a classic Bordeaux blend – three quarters Cab and the rest shared between Merlot and C...

  • Palouse Outdoors:A Spring Celebration in the Channeled Scablands

    Brad Trumbo, The Times|May 2, 2024

Spring in the scablands is purely magical, and that's no exaggeration. I can testify because the striking landscape, the rich cultural and natural history of the area, the diversity of wildlife, basalt bluffs, and grasslands coax me into photography when I should be fishing the many lakes that support healthy rainbow trout populations. This year, I ventured further north to Swanson Lakes, eager to experience early wildflowers. One golden April afternoon, I searched for anything colorful,...
