  • TEENY MCMUNN: MY RECIPE BOX

    Teeny McMunn, The Times|Sep 15, 2016

I recently tasted wheat berry salad that my friend made and I knew I would like to have it again. I asked her for the recipe and she said didn’t have a recipe but cooked the wheat berries, added fresh tomatoes, cucumbers, some black beans, and Caesar dressing (or was it Ranch?). So all or any of those ingredients make a fresh-tasting salad. She said sometimes she puts in green olives. She mentioned she would give me some wheat berries fresh off the combine. WHAT?? I’m not sure where I thought she got the wheat berries, her being a far...

Ten Years Ago Sept. 14, 2006 Anyone fortunate enough to have known Roberta Stonecipher Broom Adams – and there were many – can imagine her take on being named Pioneer of the Year at the 34th Annual Pioneer Fall Festival, which will take place this coming Sunday in Waitsburg. She’d laugh and exclaim “Really?! Me?! Ya shouldn’t have!” Roberta was one of Waitsburg’s citizens known for the many firsts in her life. She was the first female Student Body President At Waitsburg High School, and the first Queen of the Days of Real Sport. And fittingly...

Ten Years Ago September 7, 2006 Yesterday, Elzy Conover marketed his half crop, about five months earlier and 200 pounds lighter than typical, forced out of Blue Mountain pasture by the Columbia Complex fire. “It took a big bite,” said Larry Conover, Elzy’s son, of the economic impact the fire will have on the ranch. Last year the Waitsburg Commercial Cub worried that traffic restrictions because of bridge construction would deter salmon lovers from making the jaunt to Waitsburg for the annual Salmon Barbecue. This year the bridge is compl...

  • Teeny McMunn: My Recipe Box

    Teeny McMunn, The Times|Sep 1, 2016

This recipe is listed as great for low carbers. Even tho it is warm outside, I need to have something hot to eat occasionally. This is very tasty, quick, and cooks on the stove top. I’ll add my notes at the end. I didn’t submit a picture when I made this as I used purple cabbage and it would have looked like a dark mess;) 1 stick butter 1 small head cabbage 1 small onion chopped 1 pound smoked sausage, sliced into round pieces 1 (15 ounce) can diced tomatoes or Rotel tomatoes (if you want it spicy) ½ teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon pepper Melt butte...

    The Times|Aug 25, 2016

Ten Years Ago August 31, 2006 It seems that the citizens of Waitsburg and Columbia County are a pretty generous and caring bunch. Several fire officials have remarked that people have been uncommonly helpful to firefighters and other support personnel during this siege. With over 1,200 workers having poured into the area, supplies have often been a bit short. One supply clerk remarked, “Here, people bend over backward to help you out. At other fires I’ve been on, you couldn’t even get anyone to look at you much less help you out.” A recent...

  • Teeny McMunn: My Recipe Box

    Teeny McMunn, The Times|Aug 25, 2016

This is a recipe my daughter in law shared. The muffins are not as sweet as some of the store bought ones that are more cake like. This recipe only makes 6 muffins, so most of us will double or triple it. I doubled it and made 15 muffins. If you do double it, PLEASE, check your measurements. I don't know why, but I always seem to miss one, like two tablespoons of milk should have been doubled, but I didn't. They are baking now so I will see if it hurt the recipe. 1 egg 1 cup flour ½ c....

This salad recipe comes from the same friend who shared her chicken/poppy seed salad recipe from last week. She said she often serves them together with fresh crescent rolls. Ten Years Ago August 10, 2006 John and Marilyn Stellwagen, owners of Waitsburg Hardware and Mercantile, have started the process of fixing up the exterior of the 1882 building originally built by L.L. Powell. The process involves scraping and repainting the exterior brick, and removing some of the façade applied to the building decades ago to “modernize” its appearance.
