    The Times|Sep 19, 2024

WAITSBURG - The Waitsburg Historical Society held its Annual Fall Festival on Sunday September 15, 2024 at the Bruce House Museum. Visitors got to taste homemade pies, bison burgers, and other treats. Historical society members, some in period clothing, gave tours of the collections. New to the fair was the reconstructed commerical typeset press used by The Times. Vintage cars and trucks lined Main Street in front of the Bruce House lawn, where vendors set up shop. Music was provided by Dr....

    The Times|Sep 19, 2024

Ten Years Ago September 18, 2014 [Photo Caption] Jim and Geraine Hansen, Waitsburg's 2014 Pioneers of the Year, reside on a picturesque plot near the top of what their daughter Mary calls "the Hansen version of Walton Mountain." Mary lives just a half-mile up the road; daughter Karen Yager is three miles up; and son Norman lives in the original family homestead on top of Coppei Mountain. In addition to the mountain-dwellers, the immediate Hansen clan includes daughters Cheryl in Pullman, Jeanett...

  • Stuffed Zucchini Boats

    The Times|Sep 19, 2024

This is on my dinner menu tonight so I will be able to tell you if it's any good. Or if it isn't, find another recipe. It has all the ingredients that go well together and I have an over-large zucchini that needs to be used. Then I will be out of zucchini and I will have to resource more. I don't do a lot of baking with zucchini but I do have my favorites. Chocolate Zucchini Cake, because it's moist enough not to need frosting and Chocolate Zucchini Bread, which I have put into the column. What...

  • Charge, recharge, or no charge

    Vicki Sternfeld-Rossi, The Times|Sep 12, 2024

Last spring, when Daniel was working as a private chef in Europe, I defied his command and purchased a new lawn mower. I went with a battery-operated model, then gave away our smelly, hard-to-pull-start gas mower. Along with the mower, I was sucked into the “package deal,” which included a weed whacker, and an extra battery for the mower, fortuitously a stroke of luck. For some unknown reason, one of the batteries was faulty, and it died. Or so I thought. My maintenance philosophy drives Dan...

1 Years Ago September 11, 2014 [Photo Caption] Waitsburg third-grade teacher Marne Henderson was joined by many of her students as she accepted the ALS Ice Bucket challenge last week. Superintendent Carol Clarke joined in the "fun" and accepted a challenge from Dayton Schools Superintendent Doug Johnson. Both ladies made online donations to ALS. Twenty-Five Years Ago September 9, 1999 Practices for the Waitsburg Cardinals this past week have shown some gains since last weekend's football...

  • Spaghetti a la Chief

    The Times|Sep 12, 2024

The Chief was a terrific cook, his specialty being spaghetti with meat sauce. (A lot of pasta went into building that physique.) This dish took all day to prepare and required a few bottles of red wine to keep the chef hydrated. The secret to this sauce is chopping all the ingredients to the same size. So, grab a bottle of Chianti and get cooking. Ingredients Meatballs 2 slices of white bread 4 tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese ½ cup of milk 2 tablespoons of chopped garlic 2 pounds...

    The Times|Sep 5, 2024

The family of Trish Hulce would like to thank everyone that joined us in her Celebration of Life. We so appreciated all the love, support, flowers, cards, and shared memories. She will live in our hearts forever until we meet again....

  • Palouse Outdoors:The Bulls of Astoria

    Brad Trumbo, The Times|Sep 5, 2024

September is an incredible time in the Pacific Northwest. Fall is finally upon us, and the heat of the summer fades into brisk, starry nights. Fishing picks up again, and hunting seasons open. While we look forward to fall in our neck of the woods, September on the lower Columbia River also has plenty to offer. When my hometown buddy, Matt, called with a request to fish the Columbia River for fall Chinook, I had no choice but to invite him out for a west coast road trip that would land us in...

  • Where have all the seasons gone?

    Vicki Sternfeld-Rossi, The Times|Sep 5, 2024

I wrote a column a few months ago about recognizing the seasons by the bugs that show up, but in retrospect, I’m not sure that is the best determinant. I’ve seen my share of bees and hoverflies this summer, but not like the swarms of past summers. It also seems that ladybugs are in short supply this year. I did need to thwart a minor invasion of squash bugs using an organic spray and marigolds planted throughout the garden. Thankfully, we haven’t had a bumper crop of summer squash, aka zucch...

    The Times|Sep 5, 2024

Ten Years Ago September 4, 2014 Waitsburg – Eight-year-old Makenna Barron says she can only recall one of the two times she attended the Pendleton Round-Up. She will attend for her third time next week and this visit she won't forget. The pint-sized cowgirl will kick off the week of rodeos by singing the national anthem in the Happy Canyon arena at Monday's opening night PBR Classic rodeo. Makenna, who reigned as Miss Rodeo Washington Sweetheart last year, has rodeo in her blood. Her mom, T...

  • Extra Creamy Chocolate Mousse w/Meringue & A Classic Manhattan

    The Times|Sep 5, 2024

In February, I wanted to celebrate my father Carl's 100th birthday with his favorite birthday beverage – a Manhattan cocktail and a decadent dessert. Although he passed in 2022, having a party with friends and family to acknowledge his 98 years was significant. My dad was born on a dining room table in the house he grew up in just north of Green Lake, outside the then-Seatte city limit. He was a WWII veteran and was married to my mother, Pat, for over 63 years until she passed. He built their r...

  • PIONEER PORTRAITS

    The Times|Aug 29, 2024

Ten Years Ago August 28, 2014 Waitsburg – It was an unusually full house at last week's City Council meeting, at least through the first item on the agenda: discussion and action on the new public art selection finalists. Members of the Waitsburg Art Commission, community members and artists alike were on hand to offer input on the final Council approval of the two bronze sculptures -- to reside on Main Street – selected by the Commission earlier this month. On August 13 artists Jeffrey Hil...

  • Semolina Orange Cake

    Luke Chavez, The Times|Aug 29, 2024

It is ironic that I would start and finish my time writing this column with recipes for desserts, being that I do not have the biggest sweet tooth. In fact, my gastronomic cravings tend to be more for the savory or spicy side of things. However, after sharing an array of recipes, from appetizers, soups and salads to stews and meaty entrees, it made sense to end on a sweet bite. This week, to celebrate a family birthday I turned to a recipe that John developed during the early days of the coffee...

    The Times|Aug 22, 2024

Waitsburg High School Cheerleaders, Waitsburg Parks and Rec, and facilator Jillian Henze hosted a youth cheer camp at Preston Park. Kids ages 4 to 17 learned cheers, a dance, and basic-level stunting from August 19 to 21. Above, Henze and the cheerleaders taught the campers cheer moves under the shade of park trees....

  • I went to a Garden Party

    Vicki Sternfeld-Rossi, The Times|Aug 22, 2024

I went to a garden party, and to my surprise, I saw a face that was familiar but out of context. Then it hit me, "I know you from tennis." First, I thought, "What are you doing here," but asked more politely, "How do you know this group?" It turns out that her husband is a guitarist in the host's band, and they are long-time friends. It was another connection in this cool web of the Waitsburg, Walla Walla, Dayton small-town labyrinth of friends. And, not that I would have anything bad to say,...

  • Cars and Cheers as summer ends

    Lane Gwinn, The Times|Aug 22, 2024

The Cruizin Prescott Car Show was held Saturday, August 17. The well attended show brings out car and truck lovers and thier rides. Waitsburg resident, Karl Newell, took home the Best Old Truck award for his 1951 Chevy Panel truck. He appreciated the Walla Walla Electric sponsored award. At Cheer Camp this week, Waitsburg City Council member Jillian Henze offered kids 4 to 17 the chance to jump, climb, dance, cheer, and make new friends. Waitsburg Cheerleader Cedar Stegall helped these young...

Ten Years Ago August 21, 2014 [Photo Caption] Waitsburg resident Pam Conover studies a scale model of a proposed sculpture of Waitsburg's founders by Walla Walla artist Jeffrey Hill. The sculpture represents Waitsburg's three founding fathers: Sylvester Wait, William Bruce and William Preston. • Crispy Parmesan Chicken

    Luke Chavez, The Times|Aug 22, 2024

The last sweet weeks of summer are always my favorite time of the season. The days are still long, yet thankfully, the scorching triple-digit temperatures are mostly behind us. It is also when our homegrown tomatoes are ripe and bursting with sun-kissed flavor. When tomatoes are as good as they are right now, I mostly enjoy eating them as unadulterated as possible – just a drizzle of olive oil and a pinch of flakey sea salt is all that is needed. As a result, I am always in search of recipes f...

  • Go fly a kite

    Karen Huwe, The Times|Aug 15, 2024

There are lots of things to do on the Washington and Oregon Coasts. My favorite activities are biking, crabbing, searching the beach for treasures, flying kites, and building sandcastles. Recently, I had the opportunity to try crabbing for the first time. Walking the swells during low tide while trying not to fill your boots with water is not an easy task; hip waders would have been a smart idea. Netting crab on the Washington coast can be hit or miss. One weekend, you can net your limit in thir...

  • Struck by Lightning

    Paul Ocker, The Times|Aug 15, 2024

I have been thinking about getting an electric vehicle for quite a while, and the Ford F-150 4x4 Lightning was at the top of my list. I was unsure whether the yea-sayers and the nay-sayers were giving me the correct information to inform me in making the purchase. I liked the idea of no longer burning dinosaur juice to get back and forth to work, but the tried and true system of filling up at the pump made me hesitant to change my ways. On a recent trip to San Jose, California, I discovered...

  • Visitor Bait & Switch

    Vicki Sternfeld-Rossi, The Times|Aug 15, 2024

Yes, we had visitors, just not the visitors we expected. At the last minute, a friend in the group that was going to visit last week came down with COVID-19, and their trip had to be rescheduled. The Zoom meeting to coordinate a new time also had to be delayed. Evidently, he had a Paxlovid rebound and was still not feeling great. That’s when we had a fortuitous switcheroo. Daniel got a call from friends from Los Angeles who were heading to Walla Walla with their friends from Vancouver, W...

  • PIONEER PORTRAITS

    The Times|Aug 15, 2024

Ten Years Ago August 14, 2014 [Photo Caption] Ed and Cathy Lambert are outstanding in their field (literally and figuratively). The pair have kept Waitsburg residents supplied with their "top secret" sweet corn and fresh produce for a quarter century. Twenty-Five Years Ago August 12, 1999 Area farmers were back working in the fields late Monday or Tuesday following weekend rains which stopped operations for a few days, then were halted again by showers early Wednesday morning. Despite the stops...
