  • Around the Valley: With Karen Huwe

    Karen Huwe, The Times|Aug 4, 2022

The lottery was not for money but a week's stay at beautiful Lake Tapp near Bonney Lake, Washington. My sisters, sans one, and I enjoyed a two-bedroom cabin with a kitchen and a deck overlooking the lake. After stopping at the store to stock up on groceries, we enjoyed a boat ride compliments of an area resident and his family. At the lake, we saw geese, goslings, eagles, hot air balloons, and lots of people enjoying water sports. Mount Rainier is the backdrop of the lake, which made for...

  • Waterbrook 2020 Reserve Chardonnay

    Paul Gregutt, The Times|Aug 4, 2022

I’ve been drinking a lot of Chardonnay during the recent hot weather, and if you put a slight chill on the bottle (about 20 minutes in the fridge) it can be a most refreshing choice. This Waterbrook Chard is labeled as a reserve but falls into the value category for me as it is difficult to find this kind of flavor at this kind of price. It’s more generous than pretentious, done in a straight-ahead style with bold fruit flavors of apple and lemon meringue pie. A wash of toasty oak puts a pre...

  • PIONEER PORTRAITS

    The Times|Aug 4, 2022

Ten Years Ago August 2, 2012 If Karen Mohney’s math is correct, the Rainbow Girls group has been active in Waitsburg for more than 75 years, and about 680 to 700 Waitsburg girls have been part of the organization. Mohney, the current mother advisor of the Waitsburg group, is no stranger to Rainbow herself. And there are many other volunteers and board members who have also spent many years of their lives involved in the organization. The women, older and younger, say they stay with Rainbow b...

  • Pasta alla Nerano

    Luke Chavez, The Times|Aug 4, 2022

While ripe tomatoes and sweet corn are what I most associate with summer cooking, it is bountiful zucchini that usually manages to make an appearance at every meal of the season. Living in a town full of seasoned and generous, backyard gardeners, there can never be enough zucchini recipes to have on hand. Thankfully, the dark-green summer squash is as versatile in the kitchen as it is prolific in the garden. Grilled, roasted, or sauteed, zucchini takes on different flavors with every culinary...

  • A Familiar Place and a New Place

    Karen Huwe, The Times|Jul 28, 2022

One of our favorite camping spots is Winchester Lake State Park in Idaho. It is about 36 miles south of Lewiston and has a great lake to kayak or paddleboard, as motorized boats are not allowed. With an Idaho fishing license, you are sure to catch a few fish for a fish fry. The area also offers some nice hiking trails. Winchester is a small town of about 500 people, and this year we were camping during the 4th of July holiday and enjoyed the town's festivities. People came from around the area...

  • You know it's hot when…

    Vicki Sternfeld-Rossi, The Times|Jul 28, 2022

Cole Porter’s song is on point this week, “It’s too darn hot.” It’s too hot when even the dandelions popping up in the garden are dying from the heat. I thought those weeds were invincible; evidently, even they have a heat tolerance level. The weeds we planned to blast with Roundup are slowly turning brown and withering away. It saves breathing in some poison for the moment. Mugsy is not adapting well to the heat. Usually, he is anxious to join me on a walk or go outside to run around and chase...

  • Pacific Rim 2021 Dry Riesling

    Paul Gregutt, The Times|Jul 28, 2022

Pacific Rim makes a wide range of affordable Rieslings in a variety of sweetness levels. The Dry Riesling featured here is richly fruity with a luscious blend of peach, apricot, and papaya fruit. Though it is accurately labeled as dry the ripeness of the fruit provides a slight impression of sweetness, which rounds out the palate and cuts through the tart acidity. The flavors extend into a pleasing finish with a mix of orange blossoms, Meyer lemon, pink grapefruit, and a cascade of ripe...

  • PIONEER PORTRAITS

    The Times|Jul 28, 2022

Ten Years Ago July 26, 2012 While amber waves of grain may be a nice song lyric, they are often not the nicest object to stare at for an entire 13-hour workday. Veteran harvest employee Zach Beasley is more than familiar with endless fields of wheat. This summer, Beasley will be working his fifth harvest season for Waitsburg wheat farmer Rusty Lyons. Beasley, a senior mechanical engineering student at Washington State University, said while the wheat can get monotonous, he enjoys the crew...

  • Summer Barley Salad

    Luke Chavez, The Times|Jul 28, 2022

Several years ago, we were in Los Angeles visiting friends and family during a milestone birthday. As part of the festivities, we were invited to a friend’s house for a potluck barbeque. Being very familiar with the culinary trends of health-conscious southern California, I made a joke on our way there that the potluck would be nothing but raw kale. When we arrived at the party, there was fresh guacamole made from avocados grown in someone’s backyard, gorgeous wild-caught seafood on the gri...

  • Dayton's newest mural

    Lane Gwinn, The Times|Jul 21, 2022

It is a wrap, but not. Unlike digital art printed on mylar or polyestor and applied to outdoor walls, this is a painting. Dayton's newest mural was created using brushes and paint by a muralist. Painter Don Brown and his wife Janice from Kennewick are familiar faces in Dayton, having restored several historic murals downtown. This mural, on the east side of the Weinhard parking lot, is Brown's original design and was commissioned by The Weinhard Hotel and the Dayton Development Task Force....

  • Drink up and chow down at Laht Neppur

    Beka Compton, The Times|Jul 21, 2022

WAITSBURG–This week, I sat down with Glen Bates as he shut down the outdoor grill for the night at Laht Neppur. We were interrupted by numerous variations of "Thanks, Glen!" and 'see ya' later.' "I'm starting to get that a lot," my interviewee said. "Whether here, at the grocery store, or just driving down the street." Laht Neppur Brewing Co. has served cold beers and warm cheers to Waitsburg and all its visitors for nearly 20 years. For six years, Bates has been grilling the perfect burgers, w...

  • The Red Carpet Treatment

    Popo Ott, The Times|Jul 21, 2022

I call this series “Just Vignettes” because that’s what they are, just short snapshots of things that have happened to me or have been told to me. I can vouch the stories you read here are mostly true. The officers of the USS Missouri were in a fit of excitement and activity. In preparation for the arrival of a distinguished visitor, the quarterdeck was to be laid with a red carpet, a normal adornment for such occasions. Now, unbelievably, the carpet was missing from the Bosun’s locker. Why would anyone purloin the red carpet? What could they p...

  • Long Shadows 2021 Cymbal Sauvignon Blanc

    Paul Gregutt, The Times|Jul 21, 2022

The first vintage of Cymbal was in 2018, and it has quickly become a tasting room favorite. The 2021 was sourced from Gamache, Boushey, and Bacchus vineyards – a terrific trio. It's an ideal summer wine, immaculately fresh and loaded with zesty flavors of grapefruit, white peach, and lemongrass, brushing against the edges of more tropical fruits. Fermented in a mix of cement egg and stainless-steel drums, it was finished briefly in French oak barrels, one-fifth new. By any measure, it's b...

  • My Secret to Life – lowering expectations

    Vicki Sternfeld-Rossi, The Times|Jul 21, 2022

Many years ago, I worked for an insurance brokerage firm that spent frequent time and much money on self-improvement, time management, and general management classes and books. In Pursuit of Excellence was a "must have" book for all businesses and their employees. The book's premise was that the focus should not be on perfection but on excellence. It presented the concept of perfection as unachievable and subjective; one person's "perfect" may not be another's. I am pragmatic, so perfection has...

  • PIONEER PORTRAITS

    The Times|Jul 21, 2022

Ten Years Ago July 19, 2012 When music teacher Rebecca Wilson was cleaning out some space in her closet, she came across Waitsburg Marching Band Uniforms that had been in retirement for nearly 30 years. Those red, cream and gold uniforms had been worn by hundreds of students from the 1950’s through the mid-1980’s when the polyester and nylon formalwear was traded in for matching polo shirts. Part of the reason the band students no longer wear fancy uniforms is because marching bands are...

  • Roasted Cherry Tomato and Ricotta Pasta

    Luke Chavez, The Times|Jul 21, 2022

Every summer, I patiently anticipate the first homegrown tomatoes of the season. While diligently watering our garden, I keep a daily check on when the sun-ripened delights are ready to pluck. This year, with the long, cold, and wet spring we had, everything seems to be a little behind schedule. Sadly, we might have to wait a tad longer for our backyard tomatoes. Luckily, ripe cherry tomatoes, available in most grocery stores, are a quick go-to when craving a burst of sunny flavor. Here, the...

  • Mae West – Popo Ott

    Popo Ott, The Times|Jul 14, 2022

What will follow is a story which appeared as filler in the Naval Institute "Proceedings," If I recall correctly. It was just a brief, little blurb, but I have never forgotten it. In the summer of 1942, during the early days of WWII, the United States struggled to get the upper hand in the war with Japan. A series of intense naval battles mainly occurred at night in the South Pacific near Guadalcanal. Some of these battles involved ships firing guns at each other at near point-blank range in...
