  • Chamber music pop-up performance

    The Times|Jun 23, 2022

WAITSBURG-Violinists Tim Christie and Maria Sampen brought music to The Royal Block and American 35 in two pop-up performances on Tuesday evening. Christie is the Founder and Artistic Director of the Walla Walla Chamber Music Festival (WWCMF). The unexpected and beautiful performances were appetizers for the main show later in the evening. This year The Plaza Theater was host to the Ivalas Quartet who performed Tuesday night....

  • Around the Valley: With Karen Huwe

    Karen Huwe, The Times|Jun 16, 2022

School's out for summer, and it's time to take the family outdoors and go camping. The decision is where to go that is close by, considering the high gas prices. You can travel to the Little Goose Dam area or the Tucannon Lakes in about an hour. Both are good choices with a few things in common and different features to consider. On the drive to your destination, you must be on the lookout for slow-moving animals crossing the road; cows near the dam and bighorn sheep in the Tucannon area. In bot...

  • Wine of the Week

    Paul Gregutt, The Times|Jun 16, 2022

By the time you read this note, actual summer weather may be back. There's no better way to celebrate that happy occasion than with a nicely-chilled bottle of rosé. The Mercer family goes back a long way in eastern Washington and pioneered the planting of grapes in the Horse Heaven Hills AVA. This all-Grenache rosé is sourced from one of their finest sites. It has a palate-pleasing cherry candy character, though any initial perception of sweetness is a function of well-ripened fruit rather t...

  • Combat at the Park

    Beka Compton, The Times|Jun 16, 2022

WAITSBURG-The Barony of Wastekeep set up camp at Preston Park over the weekend. Blackwork embroidery classes, duels, and archery shoots were just a couple of the events enjoyed by those who reside under the watch of Baron Thorkell Palsson and Baronness Guðrun Sæbjarnarsdottir. Barony of Wastekeep is its own world within the Kingdom of An Tir. This gathering was small, with 45 members braving the chilly wind and rain. The group will return, once again, in August, and they anticipate a much l...

  • Business Spotlight: A-Ron's Rustic Designs

    Beka Compton, The Times|Jun 16, 2022

WAITSBURG-Crafting has been a passion of hers for years, but it wasn't until this year that Erin Elsey combined her love for creating with a drive to be a business owner. Elsey, who lives in Waitsburg with her husband, Jeremy, and their three children, bought a sewing machine last year and taught herself how to sew rice bags to give to her family members. Rice-filled bags hold heat or cold and can be put in the microwave or freezer to be used on sore muscles. After posting images online, she...

  • Meltdown Mania May

    Vicki Sternfeld-Rossi, The Times|Jun 16, 2022

Good riddance meltdown May 2022. For some reason, this year May has been a month filled with meltdowns, including one of my own, (a rarity for me). Although they minimized in severity as the month proceeded, it was slightly disheartening. It started with a friend, who shall remain nameless unless she chooses to reveal herself. As she described her day, it started with receiving threatening hate mail while trying to meet a writing deadline with a computer that went rogue. To add to the madness,...

    The Times|Jun 16, 2022

Ten Years Ago June 14, 2012 Most 21-year-old men can’t be described using words like selfless, kind and determined but then, Kristofer Wilbur isn’t like most 21-year-old men. Wilbur is a special-needs adult living in Dayton. He has seen his share of hurdles, but he doesn’t let his special needs set him back. In 2007 Wilbur joined the Blue Mountain Stampeders, a Special Olympics team based in Walla Walla. On the team, he runs, walks, throws shot put and brings home medals. “Track is fun and rew...

  • Strawberry Shortcake

    Luke Chavez, The Times|Jun 16, 2022

One of the things I most look forward to in late spring is the first bite of a plump sun ripened strawberry. This year, because of the unseasonable cool and rainy Spring, the harvest in our backyard patch was a little later than usual. All week, we have been plucking bright red berries by the bowlful, just in time for the approaching Summer Solstice. When fruit, such as strawberries, are perfectly ripe and in-season, the general rule is the simpler the preparation the better. Which perhaps is...

    Karen Huwe, The Times|Jun 9, 2022

My first year of retirement from Waitsburg Schools just zipped by! I went with three of my four sisters on my first zipline adventure to commemorate the occasion. It zipped by also! The Coeur d'Alene 7-line zip tour consisted entirely of tree-top platforms. There were two high-swinging sky bridges to cross, and twice we belayed down to the next level. There is not a lot of walking in this family-friendly adventure; just zipping along above Beauty Bay, through trees and gorgeous scenery....

  • It's a Parade

    Vicki Sternfeld-Rossi, The Times|Jun 9, 2022

It was great fun to see the Celebration Days Parade this year. It brought back so many parade memories, from attending and marching in parades. I marched in New York with my 4-H troop. Later, as a High School band member in Tucson, I marched in a heavy wool uniform in 100-degree heat. In Flagstaff, where I went to college, I continued in the band and marched in ten below zero weather. In Los Angeles, I was just an avid spectator past my marching days. A Los Angeles parade would include...

  • PG Wine of the Month

    Paul Gregutt, The Times|Jun 9, 2022

For a number of reasons, the best dry rosé wines have gotten more expensive, especially those Oregon rosés made exclusively from Pinot Noir grapes. Pinot Noir is costly to grow and turning it into rosé doesn't make that part of the process any cheaper. Additionally, the fires of 2020 meant a number of wineries lost some or most of their crop, so 2021 is a recovery vintage. This estate-grown, pale copper, generously flavorful wine mixes strawberries, blood oranges, watermelon, and jicama ac...

    The Times|Jun 9, 2022

Ten Years Ago June 7, 2012 The 131st class to graduate from Dayton High School recessed from the gym and into the rest of their lives on Saturday with thousands of dollars in scholarship money in hand and an upbeat Kenny Chesney country song filling the room. Valedictorian Carter Currin said any bad moments in high school were ultimately tiny blips on the radar and many happier moments await the group. “We, the class of 2012, are ready to make that future bright,” salutatorian Keisha Phi...

  • Orange Rhubarb Panna Cotta

    Luke Chavez, The Times|Jun 9, 2022

With summer just around the corner, and the spring weather finally cooperating, the season for outdoor entertaining has officially started in our backyard. Fresh herbs and wildflowers perfume the air around our deck, and warmth from the late afternoon sun lingers well into dinner time. This week, inspired by the robust rhubarb in the garden, I set out to make a dessert with a taste to match this lovely time of year. Here, a delicate, creamy panna cotta is punctuated with a bottom layer of...

  • Palouse Outdoors: Taming the Tiger (Trout)

    Brad Trumbo, The Times|Jun 2, 2022

The pond could not have been more than a couple of acres, just small enough that I could fish a full lap around in my float tube before the consequences of sitting belly-deep in frigid water required a scramble to shore. The shorelines were steep and shaded by conifers except for along the manmade dam, which allowed enough sunlight to encourage a healthy aquatic vegetation bed to grow. Per my usual mode of operation on trout waters, I cast a small wooly bugger-like fly on a five-weight rod and...
