While they didn’t achieve all their season goals, one of them making the playoffs, it was a season for the history books for this newly combined program between Dayton and Waitsburg and its boys basketball program. After a winless 2018-2019 basketball season, D-W’s boys basketball team picked up its first victory for the combined programs against Prescott in December and then proceeded to earn league victories against DeSales and Liberty Christian as well as a second non-league victory against Pomeroy for a 4-16 season record and a 2-10 league...
GRANGER—The Dayton-Waitsburg girls basketball team put its entire heart and soul into its final contest of the season in a difficult loss to DeSales 60-43 at the 2020 Eastern Washington Athletic Conference tournament. Part of the difficulty was coming off a brutal loss to Tri-Cities Prep Jaguars the night before and having to face the DeSales Irish for the second time in a week. “The D-W ladies went down fighting and played with a lot of heart,” said Assistant Coach Desirae Jones. “We got within six in the third quarter, but the Irish pulled...
WALLA WALLA—In clearly their best game of the season, Dayton-Waitsburg’s boys basketball team avenged an early home loss to the DeSales Irish on a last second three-point shot by sophomore guard Dylan Bledsoe to win, 49-46. As the clock wound down Tuesday night amid a snowstorm, things heated up in the gym at DeSales and one couldn’t help but wonder if a win at the buzzer could happen a third time for D-W. The Irish took advantage of some cold shooting by Dayton-Waitsburg in the third quarter and stretched what would be their biggest lead...
WALLA WALLA—Dayton-Waitsburg’s girls basketball team got off to a great start against league foe DeSales Irish last Tuesday in its final league game of the 2019-20 season but a quiet third quarter led to an Irish victory of 40-24 heading into the post season. Neither team played well in the first quarter that ended in an 8-8 tie. Junior MacKenna Culley looked like she was going to get D-W going with a three-pointer to take the lead 11-10 with five minutes left in the first half. But DeSales put out that fire with a bucket by Morgan Thomas who...
Dayton-Waitsburg’s Freshman phenom Claudia Benavides scored a career high 25 points Wednesday in leading her team to a 69-43 victory over Liberty Christian in an Eastern Washington Athletic Conference contest. Her effort also nabbed her the $100 bill her Grandfather Sal Benavides has been holding onto until she finally scored 20 points in a game. The results also moved D-W up in the standings, giving them a shot at playing in the district tournament, a tournament they weren’t even thinking abo...
Freshman Monte Pettichord tried heroically to repeat his miracle shot from last week against Pomeroy, instead his 3-pointer for the win clanked off the rim. However, one person's miss is an opportunity for another. His teammate, Junior Mason Finney grabbed the rebound and dribbled backwards out to beyond the three-point line to launch another buzzer-beating winning shot for the D-W win over Liberty Christian 50-49. Historically it was the combined program's first Eastern Washington Athletic...
MILTON-FREEWATER-Dayton-Waitsburg's girls basketball team came so close to flipping on a switch and getting their first win of the season at the Mac-Hi Christmas tournament. Instead they dropped a 38-30 non-league contest to Stanfield. D-W played even with the Tigers for three quarters, it was the opening period's 14-7 and subsequently the seven-point deficit that they could never quite overcome. Dayton-Waitsburg was also bit by the turnover bug as they had 10 more turnovers than Stanfield...
MILTON-FREEWATER-Oh so close. Junior Mason Finney's shot from the top of the arc bounced off the rim as the buzzer sounded for a heart-breaking loss, 53-52, Saturday afternoon to Stanfield at the Mac-Hi Christmas Tournament. It hurt even more for the once again shorthanded squad because they held a 44-37 advantage with seven minutes to go in the game. They had a 50-49 lead with 1:35 left and it was tied up at 52 after two free throws by Junior Wyatt Costello with 19 seconds left after D-W had...
MILTON-FREEWATER-Friday December 27th the Dayton-Waitsburg boys basketball team traveled to McLoughlin High School in Oregon for the first day of a holiday tournament. The boys would face Irrigon in the first round matchup. D-W quickly found themselves in a ten point deficit after Irrigon shot 8-16 from the field in the quarter. D-W shot only 5-14 in the first quarter and it ended with Irrigon leading 22-12. Irrigon's hot hand would leave them in the second quarter as DW began to whittle away at...
MILTON-FREEWATER—The Dayton-Waitsburg girls varsity basketball team played in a holiday tournament Friday the 27th at McLoughlin High School in Milton-Freewater against Irrigon. D-W started off the game shooting 2-19 from the field in the first quarter with all five points coming from Sadie Seney. D-W would chip away at the lead in the 2nd and 3rd quarters, with a balanced scoring attack bringing the score to 40-32 Irrigon at the end of the 3rd quarter. However, a big game by JaLay Burns leading all scorers with 34, proved to be too much for D-...
If they gave out points for hustle and hard work Dayton-Waitsburg would have won by a blowout Saturday night. Instead, the Dayton-Watisburg team dropped their first league contest of the year 56-46 to visiting Kittitas. Due to the fact that D-W was struggling with illness all week, they knew coming into the contest that they would have to outwork the other team because of an incomplete varsity roster. “I think that because we had those illnesses, we had to out hustle them because we didn’t have the depth we normally have,” Junior 6’1...
One day after their first league game was cancelled because of illness, the Dayton-Waitsburg girls basketball team opened league play with a 57-35 home loss to Kittitas Saturday night. In the last game of the season at the Dayton gym, the girls pushed themselves to the limit and played well in the loss. The rest of D-W’s home games will be played at the Waitsburg gym. “I thought this was one of our best games yet,” Senior Captain Kira Boggs said. “No more setbacks, we’re only going up from here.” D-W Head Coach Tamira Cully also recognized...
#54 Theo Anderson scored the first points for the Dayton-Waitsburg defense this year with his blocked punt for a safety to close out the scoring giving DW the lead at 8-6 in the 1st quarter. Unfortunately, Liberty Christian would take control in the 2nd quarter scoring eighteen unanswered points giving them a 24-8 lead at halftime that they would not relinquish. Head coach Troy Larsen had this to say, "we lost 16-38 in a non-conference game to Liberty Christian. The game started out good with both teams trading touchdowns. On our second drive...
WAITSBURG– Friday September 20th Dayton Waitsburg (DW) hosted White Swan for their third game of the season. DW won the coin toss and elected to receive the kickoff. They quickly scored on a 51-yard run from #17 Shawn Evans who scored DW’s first touchdown of the season making it 6-0. White Swan would also score on its first possession tying the score 6–6. WAITSBURG – DW had difficulty moving the ball on offense. Columbia-Burbank held DW's running game in check for most of the game and when DW's defense made stops they took over deep in their own territory. DW's defense looked good throughout the game but especially in the 2nd half when they didn't allow any points. All second half points were safeties on DW's offense. 1st 2nd 3rd 4th Total CB 8 13 2 2 25 DW 0 0 0 0 0 Highlights #17 Shawn Evans with a nice backfield tackle for a loss in the 1st q...
