DAYTON - In most cases, the best leaders are those who have spent time in the trenches themselves. That personal, practical experience helps make Dayton Developmental Disabilities Leadership Project (DDDLP) Leader Sherri Huwe and her team a valuable community resource. A few years ago I started a small monthly newspaper that was published for five years, and then abruptly stopped. I stayed on in the newspaper business though, and now I'm the owner and publisher of this one. (It's lasted about 130 years longer than the other one did.) People often tell me that one of their favorite parts of that other paper was a little bit of nonsense that usually showed up near the end of each issue. Even though that newspaper specialized in local news (so does this one),...
We regret that two 8th grade students were omitted from the 3rd Quarter Preston Hall Honor Roll printed last week. Chloe Pearson (4.0) and Cade Branson should have been included in the list....

WAITSBURG - Representatives from the Oregon Coast Aquarium in Newport, Ore. visited elementary schools in Waitsburg and Walla Walla, Monday morning. Because many children do not have an opportunity to visit the coast, the Aquarium's outreach time hits the road during the school year to bring interactive marine science education to students across the Pacific Northwest. The "Aquari-van" visited Waitsburg students, presenting programs to grades K-2 and 3-5. The topic for Southeastern Washington...
Last Friday Chicago wheat May futures closed at $6.59 per bushel. By the close of Tuesday's trading session, the price of wheat had moved up 42 cents, a move that does not completely reverse the downtrend, but decisively takes back all but about 6 cents of the downward move that started back on March 20. There are few traders willing to stand in front of such a powerful locomotive, which is one of the reasons that moves like this one are so violent. The sellers just hide. Russian President Alexander Putin has apparently decided that the...
WAITSBURG - Extra tables were quickly pulled into place at Town Hall on Saturday afternoon as attendance at the American Legion Post #35 Spring Conference exceeded expectations. The first big event for new Legion Commander, Ron Standring, and wife Cindy Standring, was a roaring success. "I think everyone enjoyed it and it went really well," said Ron. Attendees enjoyed a lunch of pulled pork and BBQ chicken, baked beans, salads and desserts with the Barnstormers providing lunchtime...
DAYTON - After 30 hours of airplane riding and an unforgettable day spent on Iwo Jima Island, Owen Agenbroad returned home to Dayton late last month. "I got a bad case of TB (tired butt) syndrome," said Agenbroad, who will soon turn 91. As The Times reported a couple of weeks ago, Agenbroad made the trip not only to revisit for the first time the island where he fought as a marine in the famous 1945 battle, which killed more than 10,000 American and Japanese soldiers. He also returned a...
Ten Years Ago April 15, 2004 Three WHS football players that played for the Cards last fall were recently recognized in the All State circles, according to Jeff Bartlow, head coach of the Waitsburg High School football program. Brandon Cole was honored as an Associated Press All State "Honorable Mention" selection at linebacker. I spent a chunk of Wednesday afternoon lounging with friends and neighbors while snacking and enjoying an '80s soundtrack. I hung out with Randy Pearson, Veronica Deal, Brad Green and Colter Mohney, to list a few. Lest you think I'm name-dropping -- don't. You were all invited. The "party" was the annual Red Cross Blood Drive hosted by the WHS National Honor Society. NHS hosts the drive as one of their many acts of community service. Advisor Liv Leid said that the group set a goal of 38 u...
When a chef named Gabe Knapp opened a small café in the front of the Weinhard Hotel about 20 years ago, Dayton had already gained a reputation as a fine dining destination. Patit Creek Restaurant was considered one of the best places to eat in eastern Washington (it still is). Knapp aimed to join that club, which he did. I moved to Dayton in 1996 and got to know Gabe, and fully enjoyed not only his great food (particularly his Panini sandwiches), but his eccentricity (not quite the "Soup Nazi"...
