The futures markets are always keen to respond to dramatic events and ideas, usually exaggerating the effects, occasionally well beyond any conceivable reality. Still, at this point the markets have so far reacted to the drama in the Ukraine's Crimean Peninsula in a relatively orderly fashion, although the discussion about the actions of Russian President Vladimir Putin is dominant at the coffee shop. It is quite clear that President Putin desires to control the seaport at Sebastopol, which is a big deal for the short-run with regard to exports...

Dear Editor: This! Like many, all through our lives we have thanked others for simple things. It is a warm and friendly thing to do and costs nothing. Sometimes there are thanks due and gladly given for greater things; when someone grabs you before you step off a curb into the path of a bus, or stops to help you on a rainy night when you have engine failure, or when a stranger returns your lost wallet. These are heart-felt expressions of real gratitude. Now we find there is a kind of thanks that even the strongest words of relief and g...
There are no stairs in the Columbia County Senior Center, at least that I could find, and the PA system was turned up a tad louder than I'm used to. But the camaraderie and fellowship I saw there was no different than a lunch crowd anywhere. More than forty people showed up for lunch last Thursday when I stopped by for a visit, and there was a lot of information to take in. As the group waited for the call to go through the meal line, Senior Center president Barbara Gibson started off by...

WAITSBURG - Ten people showed up at Tuesday night's Celebration Days meeting and hatched a plan that they are optimistic will allow Celebration Days to continue as an annual weekend event. The group hopes that an ATV poker run and riding lawnmower barrel racing will replace the sheepdog triLearn als that took place at the fairgrounds last year. The possibility of ATV safety courses and demonstrations was also discussed. The Celebration Days Committee still has one big hurdle to jump - finding a local 501c3 that would be willing to add t...

Many observers speak glibly about "cyclical" markets. It is a safe way for experts to lay down comments because the interpretation of cycles is entirely open. While it is obvious that all markets have a somewhat regular back-and-forth price motion over time, along with patterns that repeat themselves, "Good ol' Murphy" says, "Once you have carefully measured and positively identified a repeating cycle pattern in any given market, the cycle will be replaced by another pattern and no longer apply". Cycles are easy to see in the charts, but hard...
